Just broke off the rivet heads in my driveshaft housing

Post by DHort » Mon Nov 04, 2019 1:43 am

Can it be repaired or am I better off looking for another housing? I thought I did it right with a 3/4inch pipe and a socket to get the bushing out. It appears the socket was too big and it knocked off the rivits inside the housing. OOps. Suggestions welcome since I screwed up.

Don'tcha jus hate it when that happens? I guess it really matters whether you have a good one leaning against the back of the shop? Or do you need to find and buy one? If it were me, I would cuss a minute, go choose my best one out of the small group leaning against the storage shed, and start cleaning it up. However, I do have a future project need to modify one for a special purpose, and one with the rivets knocked halfway out would be a step in the right direction. So no effort lost.

I used this method with 1/2" iron pipe parts.

What kills me is if you do what the MTFCA axle manual tell you to do to remove the bushing you shear off the rivet heads, ridiculous! I think those rivets are expanded it there so tight that it wont matter if the ends of them are sheared off. Look how difficult it is to remove the pedal shaft rivets once you cut the ends off them.

From a practical standpoint, the tube is shot. A proper repair would cost more than a good used tube. These were cold riveted in a fixture.

Kinda off topic question for Adam. Were the axle tubes cold riveted too?
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!
