History of the VW beetle, even has a little Ford content

Post by Mark Gregush » Tue Nov 05, 2019 11:09 am

Reading thru this you can see some parallels of how changes were made as the Beetle was improved. Ford had a chance to get the factory for free but took a pass on it.

I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Fascinating read. I built and restored a 1969 that won the BugOlympics as a "best of show" car in 1982 at Sears Point raceway in Sonoma. Pearl White with BBS rims. I was a senior in high school. I sold the car when I went to Chico state the next yr for $5,000. A tidy sum for a '69 beetle, but the car was a gem. The stereo system was insane - I worked as a car stereo installer in high school. 2 12" woofers in the back and 2 12" woofers in the front pointing at your feet. Mids and tweeters in the doors. This was well before the low-rider boom box cars became popular. It's a miracle I can still hear a pin drop, which now helps a lot, given how many cotter pins on my T I've dropped.

The gal who bought it had a license plate made that said "Pam's Now" after everyone around town kept asking her why she was driving my car. She totaled it a year later.

I grew up in the loud stereo days Jeff. Problem was my 53 chev was 6 volt. I installed a AM-FM cassete player. I could listen to the radio on FM but tape deck didnt work so good. :ugeek:
