Authentic Top Trim Pieces

Post by Mark Osterman » Mon Nov 25, 2019 10:01 pm

Am thinking about rebuilding the top on my ‘23 runabout. I have these pieces that were used to finish the ends of hidem welt. The top one was near the arm rest. Thinking one in the middle is model A rather than T. The bottom one was on the top trim.

I have seen the style on the second picture on what I believe to be fairly original cars.
I don’t know a modern source.

You have a lot of priming and sanding to do on that top one, I've done it, and to me it's worth it for a non obtainable part. It would be nice for someone that does stamping to be able to remake that part. If there is someone out there that can do it, I have a NOS spear to loan.

A friend contacted me with pictures of trim ends available from Macs. One looks very similar to the one I have previously seen on Ts.

Apparently Macs has several other styles in their catalog.

Ok guys. So, it appears that I’m missing one of these. Anyone have one to spare that is as crappy as mine? 😀

So, I would like a little more edjumacashion about these end pieces...

1) Is the end for the top the pointed end and the end for the armrest square the end?

2) Is the arrow-head shaped piece (finger pointing #1) the same as the rusty ends (#4 & #5 from the left) but the notches out of the corners?
2b) Could a #1 be made from a #4 or #5?

3) Was the non-notched type used? If so, when?

I presume these would only been used with the hide 'em welt used from about 1923-1925?

: ^ )

It looks to me like some of those that Tim posted could be made to look very close to an original with a bit of time and a Dremel with a cutoff wheel. Dave

The problem with converting a common style spear to the Ford style is the Ford style is bigger. Yes, you can alter a common one to have the tails like a Ford one, but it still will not be correct. The Ford spear is wider from top to bottom.

The spears posted above as far as I know were only used by Ford. They can't be made from anything. If someone with a metal stamping business would be willing to make a die to stamp these, I'm sure it would be a big seller for the purists.
