Post by blgitn » Sun Dec 01, 2019 9:56 pm

Which are more highly recommend, Lucas (from Snyder's) or Universal brand?

Just installed a set of the lower cost Universal 4.50/4.75 x 21" on my touring. Like the tread pattern, and edge, they ride nice too. Nothing like new tires....the old ones were 12 years old harder rubber ;)

Check on line, you might find better prices.

If you look sometimes you can find free shipping. I am not recommending any particular brand, all my tires are used, some almost new but older.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

The Universal 4.50-4.75x21 tires are the cheapest, and slightly fatter than the “stock” tire. Universal has free shipping on everything thru this afternoon. Its a once-per-year deal they only do on the four days after Thanksgiving. Free shipping should save you an additional $80 or more.

Clincher tires are famously all made in the same factory and vary only by name, tread pattern, and price, with no variation in quality. How about 21" tires? Does the same hold true for them?

If you hate changing tires as much as I do, I would step up and get Firestones. They will last a whole lot longer, also don't forget to check you toe in when you put the new tires on.

I’ve had those Lucas 21s on my T for about 7 years now. I like em. Only compliant is that they turn brown after a few hours of UV exposure outside. I thought they were all made in Vietnam though, not USA

I bought a set of five (5) 21” Universal tires for my 1926 Coupe, 48 years ago in 1971. While the treads are worn, the rubber is still good and handle the car nicely and I would highly recommend Universal tires, however, because of the close friendship between Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone and their historical link, 2 years ago, I bought a new set of five 21” Firestone tires from Snyder’s, but haven’t gotten around to mounting them yet. Whatever tires you decide to buy, check out Summit Racing. All orders over $100 is free shipping all the time. Yes they do carry a number of tires for Ts. Got two sets of Universals (plus flaps and tubes) from them the last couple of years.

If Summit's website lists any Model T tires, it's designed to keep them well hidden. I entered Model T Ford for 1915 and 1926, and got several pages, mostly showing car covers.

Steve, Search for tube by size, then options will appear for tires. That is how I found them.

Very true, Dan. William of Ockham (1285-1347/49) stated a principle referred to as Ockham's Razor that, in modern terms, says all things equal the simple answer is usually the right answer. It's still true!

So Summit has at least one tire for Model T. Its the same price as Coker's, so Summit's free shipping makes it a good deal.

That's where I bought mine. I lucked out and just happened to look them up when they were having a 10% off sale on tires. That, added to their free shipping on orders over $100, made it a nice deal.

I am more than pleased with the 21" Lester's I just put on my car. The tread is siped for better traction and overall gives a more comfortable ride.
