Taking pictures of parts for sale or WTB

Post by Mark Osterman » Tue Jan 07, 2020 9:08 pm

One of the more frustrating things about buying model T parts on line (both here and on eBay) are bad illustrations of what people are selling. It’s as if they don’t actually look at their own pictures. Tonight I was trying to help someone selling model T parts on Facebook Marketplace to shoot better pictures. My wife shot this snap shot of me using a very simple set up. I used corrugated cardboard on the floor as a background, one cheap clamp on 60 watt bulb fixture from Home Depot for light and my iphone. A light from either side is even better ... but I was trying to keep it simple. Above all check your picture before posting. It it’s not lighted nicely or out of focus ... shoot again. It’s not like you have to it to the photo shop to get film developed! 😄

Thank you Mark. Good example. There should be oil stains on that cardboard if it relates to a Model T.

Good lighting is very important. If you are shooting something where colors must be accurate, try putting your setup next to a window to get natural light. You can light the side farthest from the window by covering a piece of cardboard with aluminum foil to make a reflector. Try holding it at different angles to bounce the window light onto the item's back side to get the best effect. Presentation is everything!

Cheers, Bill

Yes, daylight is very blue. And if you shoot outside try to do it on an overcast day or cloudy bright to avoid hard shadows.
