Is my model T seized up?

Post by Mr man » Fri Jan 17, 2020 9:23 pm

Hey everyone! My name is Carson I am 12 and just bought a 1924 model T touring. It was my dream car! I know its a little early, but it was a good deal and I took advantage and picked it up in California and took it back to Las Vegas. It is all restored and I was driving in circles around my backyard practicing and I parked it to go eat breakfast but when I came back, tuned on the key, stepped on the starter button and nothing happened, so I tried the crank and the engine did not budge. It has oil, so I am confused. Would you all help me please?

Carson: Welcome to the Forum. I think engine seizure is unlikely. Are you sure you don't have the car parked in gear, hand lever fully forward? If parked in neutral, the clutch could be jammed ( which I think is unlikely) jacking up one rear wheel and turning crank would help identify that, crank, engine and wheel will rotate. You will get at least 10 responses with advice in next hour, so you won't lack for info. Good luck and happy model T'ing. jb

This forum is so cool! I have tried pushing the car in neutral, and it rolls, so I think the clutch is not stuck. Thanks for your help!

Carson, Like mentioned, it may be in gear, It sounds like you know what makes it go, so you should know where neutral is, 1/2 to all the way back on the emergency brake lever. You may have had the linkage come undone between the clutch peddle and the clutch, next I have had the starter bind up engaged. If this is what it is ,put the emergency brake lever all the way forward ( high gear) and push the car backward, sometimes this will unbind it. We are having breakfast at Pegs diner on West Sahara at 8:30 ish. in the morning. You can call me any time, I can come over and help you figure it out. 353-4436 Congratulations on the purchase.

Carson,
Take John up on his offer, you will gain knowledge from a more experienced Model T'er. likely track down the issue faster. Just my two cents.

Carson - Might just be something as simple as the starter bendix is jammed. Push the emergency lever all the way forward and rock the car back and forth (....it should move back and forth a few inches) and if it's the bendix jammed,....that should break it loose. Hope this helps,.....harold

Interesting. Did the engine move at all with the "start"? If with the rear wheel off the ground and the crank does not turn there is a posibility that the bendix is stuck or worst, something is jambed in the fly wheel. I had a magnet get loose and get between the fly wheel and the pan.

No, the engine did not budge with the starter. I stepped on the button and did not hear anything happening other than the coils buzzing. I will try jacking up the rear wheel

If it will roll in neutral, jacking up the rear wheel won't make any difference. As others have stated it probably is a jammed bendix. Have John give you a hand.

Carson I can’t explain in words how wonderful it is to see your post. Many of us ole timers worry about our hobby and the love affair that we have with our model Ts. We need more young folks to have that same enthusiasm that you have to keep it going. I’m also impressed that you took it on yourself to problem solve. The knowledge you can find on the net about model Ts is something many of us lacked early on based on our age and the technology we had when we were young. In a small way it also keeps the memory of T modelers that have passed alive and their knowledge echos through eternity for us to reference. Even at my age I’ve searched the net to solve a problem and see post from older friends long gone that provided the solve. Best of luck, bunch of great gals & guys in the hobby and as you have seen ready to come to your aid. Keep it going.

Welcome to the forum Carson. Glad you didn't do like me and wait until you were 69 to start working on Model T's. Similar to you I learned to drive by driving my dad's 1955 Ford around our horse pasture. Running over the occasional bush kept the underside clean but is not recommended...

I have a few comments:

1.) You should take John up on his offer to look at your car (thanks John!) - you'd learn something and John could fill you in on the resources available to a Model T-er in your area. Without the help of others my Model T would still be sitting in the barn.

2.) I learned something from this thread - didn't know the Bendix could lock up and how to unlock it.... see what I mean :-)

3.) Be careful loosening the starter. There is a procedure that must be followed to remove it - doing so without removing the bendix first can cause serious damage to other parts that may require engine disassembly.

4.) Do not feel reluctant to ask questions or answer those of others because of your age. On this forum, age doesn't matter. As far as the rest of us are concerned you're just one of the guys.... Again, let me say Welcome and Nice Car!

Really nice touring Carson.Welcome to our little group. I was 4 years older than you when I received my first - a ‘23 touring - Model T. Increase your knowledge and enthusiasm for it and the payback - a super chick magnet in high school - will be well worth the effort. And I’d like to echo the philosophy John Tannehill offered.
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people 🤪

Glad that worked for you. However a word of caution. A starter cannot be removed without first removing the Bendix. When the starter spins, the Bendix is driven toward the flywheel from the back. If the Bendix isn't removed first damage to the coil ring will result. So if you have to do this again, be careful not to let the start move very far toward the front of the car. If it continues to do this, remove the Bendix and starter. Check for a straight starter shaft and you may need to replace some parts of the Bendix. I hope you contact John Warren and take all the help and advice you can get.

This is the greatest thread I’ve ever read.
I was 12 when I got my first car. Got a State waiver to get my 1st summer job - neighbor man came over one day and said, “I hear you’re a working man now. (He knew I wanted a model T) I know an old car you might like to see...” He had already asked my Dad’s permission to give it to me, but he asked $500 for it - exactly what I made that summer. He wanted me to have the experience of having worked towards something.
Kept it for 30 years.
Thank you Art - wherever you are.

1952 Studebaker Commander - ugliest car ever built, but sure was a lot of fun. Drove it around that cornfield for YEARS before I had a license.
Still working on getting my 1st Model T....

Carson,
Please keep playing around with mechanical things. You have no idea how much you will learn about how to figure out things on your own. You will give yourself confidence to work on anything. I get my daughter in the garage anytime I can. Keep posting about your car and what you are working on.

We were all excited to see his new T. It sounds like the previous owner wanted for Carson to be the new owner. Very nice original car and Carson wants to keep it that way. He does have a few things he needs. AC brakes, he has a small drum ruckstell. I advise him to pick a gear and not shift that for now. He is also in need of two decent used firestone tires. 30X3-1/2. His generator cutout is also sticking. I’m sure he would appreciate any help. It is a great seeing how excited he is about his new car😁

Great looking car and your bad photo is better than most of my good ones. Drive as often as you can in circles or a pasture that is how I learned to drive in a 48 pickup. The Model T is much more fun.
Around and around we go and where we stop we check the gas oil water and tires.

Carson keep up the enthusiasm, the T model changed the world and it certainly did for my corner of it. Best to you.

Carson, I got my Model T when I was 12 and I still have it. That was in 1945 and I lived in Wisconsin. I brought it to Sacramento and my boys (teenagers then) and I restored it. Have fun!!!!

Getting a Model T at a young age is a blessing, and getting it in Clark County is even better. There are some great places to explore nearby, and some swell Model T roads. It may seem that the age when it will be legal for you to drive is a long way off, but it will be here before you know it. There are three things I would recommend in the meantime.

1 The most obvious thing is to get the car ready. Your touring may need a few things fixed, or a lot. Fortunately there's a lot of information and help available. Here's a check list. Many of the things listed here may apply to your 1924 touring: http://dauntlessgeezer.com/DG93.html.

2 Practice driving on private property. By the time you go for your driving test for a license you can do the test in a Model T if you want.

3 Get some running board cans. In future years they will save you an inconvenient long walk more than once.

Carson - living in the desert you know the importance of water.... I don't know the condition of your radiator and cooling system and whether you plan to run plain water or antifreeze but be aware that it is not unusual for a T with an original type radiator to boil over. The cooling system is not pressurized so boil-overs are just something people got used to back in the day. Steve's advice of carrying extra fluids is good, especially when it comes to coolant. Don't forget a glove or rag for the hot radiator cap :D Having your radiator cleaned by a competent radiator shop is a good idea and might help. Me, I installed a new Bergs flat tube radiator which has almost three times the cooling area of the original round tube types. Something else people did "in the day" was install water pumps. Unfortunately, most of the original designs tend to leak and are seen as unwanted complexity. There is a modern design with sealed bearings available from Texas T Parts if you want to go that route.

As you will soon learn if you haven't already, Model T's are a work in progress. There is always something. Don't be discouraged....just think of the education you're getting!

Next thing we need to figure out is how to get you to Detroit for the Old Car Festival at Greenfield Village some September..... Mecca for old car guys :)

Yes thanks for all the advice! I really want to go to the festival in Detroit. I think it would be so much fun! The only problem Is the distance. I'm sure we will figure it out. Boy I can't wait to be able to drive on the roads!

The Old Car Festival is a swell couple of days, but as you say it's a long way from L.V. Even if you flew you'd have to miss a day or two of school. Greenfield Village is historically educational though, with Edison's lab and shops and other neat pieces of history. I aim to keep going in my 1915 as long as they'll let me back in, and you can sure ride it around the village if you want, and drive it when you're legal. :)

I would bet you would have more rides in model T's than you have time for at OCF.

Damn, Benp that is a good looking Studebaker. They sure we're beautiful cars.
The first thing I did to my first model T was try to remove the starter without first removing the Bendix drive. I ruined the fields and ran a VW distributor all the years I owned that car.
I think our young new forum member should remove the Bedix and leave the starter on. Hit the starter button and as it spins look to see if the shaft wobbles.
If the shaft is straight just put a new Bendix on.
Let's hope the ring gear teeth are good.

Carson, if you are doing OK at school, then a trip to OCF for a weekend will teach you more than a week at school sitting behind a desk. I was lucky enough to have parents that understood that. On hand experiences are the best education you can get. Just watch out for that guy named Dallas - he would probably make you take a test. :)
