Chris, my dad was born in Kingston, my grandmother's family were all from eastern Ontario and my grandfather's from the Maritimes. Interesting. Maybe it's more common/less rare out west. We used it some as adolescents.

My grandparents were adolescents in the 1890s. May also have played a role.... :D

Folks in the Model T era would have thought nothing about this! It’s amazing how we think of doing this now. Just shows us how times have changed.
People really did survive in the world without computers and nice cozy warm cars with living room interiors!
