Interesting engine on e-bay
Ok, I have no connection to this ad, it is on e-bay by Mark Fremiller from Model T Haven, but what the heck is this engine.
If it is a go fast engine someone surely has history on it as someone spent a lot of time engineering this thing,
So what is the story?????

Re: Interesting engine on e-bay
This is the first engine I have ever seen in my admittedly limited experience with cylinders/pistons not all the same size.

......also, the "two up, two down" Tony, a feature which would of course involve an other than a "stock" type crankshaft. I remember reading that there are "advantages" to this firing order, but I don't remember what the advantage is,....???

Re: Interesting engine on e-bay
Could this be an engine from one of the hill climbs before there were some restrictions put into place.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I think you might be right. The intake system and porting should be very interesting once visible with head off. With only two spark plugs, on the supercharged side and two distributors I wonder if this isn't some sort of waste spark system where sparking occurs on intake and exhaust. Exhaust is only on the smaller front/rear cylinders. Is the exhaust from the supercharged side so filled with unburnt fuel that it is refired somehow in the smaller cylinder? I wonder if the the supercharged cylinders have a shorter dome and do not have the compression of the front and rear cylinders, relying on the supercharger to boost the air/fuel amount. I wonder if this would be categorized as a "2 cylinder" motor or otherwise stay under some CID rule? Lot's of questions. It's a weird one, for sure.

I seem to recall that the traditional Two UP, Two Down provided for 1,2,3,4 firing, allowing for a better laminar flow of fuel mixture through the intake manifold. Very rough idling motor and significant dynamic balancing issues thus the heavy counterweights. With this, I suspect that exhaust from cyl 2 is reburned in 1 and cyl 3 is reburned in 4. If this is the case or something similar, I believe that it would idle horribly. Unknown if it would really run that well at high RPM but that's getting past my experience base.

Re: Interesting engine on e-bay
It will be interesting to see this once the head is off.
Could it be an experimental stratified charge engine?
It looks like it has an SAE A flange on the supercharger drive which would date it post 1952 (SAE J744).

Re: Interesting engine on e-bay
I am going for a Two cylinder Two stroke supercharged engine .
Would make a good 2cyl rally engine. N (P)

Re: Interesting engine on e-bay
he is running its as 2 one cylinder engines, must have a wicked sound. I was at the Bonneville speed weeks about 20 years ago and there was a GMC 6 running like 3 two cylinder engines, it sounded like Gatling gun at idle.

Re: Interesting engine on e-bay
This is an old design of two stroke per cycle engine (two stroke). But usually the two cylinders were opposed in a single cylinder with two crankshafts driving the two pistons. The pistons come together and move apart at the same time. When they are at the end of their strokes they uncover an exhaust port on one end and an intake port on the other. The flow is through the cylinder from one end to the other. The incoming air pushes out the exhaust at the opposite end. Usually these engines were Diesel.
In this engine, the pistons move up and down together in separate cylinders but the concept is the same. When both pistons are down, exhaust ports are uncovered in the outside cylinder and intake ports uncovered in inside cylinder. The fresh charge moves up in the inside cylinder, through a connection hole in the block, and down the outside cylinder. Both pistons move up at the same time compressing the fresh charge. The spark plug fires and burns the fresh charge in both cylinders, driving them down. The firing alternates from the first two cylinders to the back two cylinders so the firing order is 1 & 2, 3 & 4.

Sorry, the connection passages between the first two and last two cylinders are in the head, not block. You can see them in one of the photos.

Hard to figure which is more amazing: 2 up 2 down engine from years ago, or being able to take a blurry picture with a phone nowadays I'm only able to get sharp pictures with mine.
