ARE THEY NUTS?

Post by BobP » Sat Mar 14, 2020 8:19 pm

I am looking at my computer after I got home today and find out 3 of our old car club meetings for next week have been cancelled because of the virus, our stores have ( been wiped out) of toilet paper. Is everybody nuts?

Squirrel food. Except there's a run on acorns as well...

People just making sure they don't get it, and don't give it, whatever it is. I'm still getting over a case of (I think) flu, so I'm not going anywhere nor doing anything except cleaning out my Winfields and respective manifolds, catching up on schoolwork (since it's now all from home), and setting up my working toolbox in the shop after bringing it home yesterday...

Even though none of us were around in 1918, our cars were...

Not crazy, but reasonable. It depends upon where you live, too. Washington State or California, for sure. New York and Florida, even MD and Virginia. We are an older cohort and we need to stay home as much as possible. Just take a look at Italy. It could happen here. Let's hope it doesn't happen, but it is up to us.

I am 60 and still travel to plants for my business. We canceled our flight to Dallas last week and drove. Nuts, no, but taking all precautions. After my travels would u like me coming to your club meeting? Not at all. I am still in Dallas till the end of next week. We try and eat where we think it’s safe and back to the hotel. Hell, who knows who slept in this bed the week before me?
Hoarding all the toilet paper is nuts. I cannot work from home, I repair industrial machines at customers plants.
But I don’t go hang with my older model a and t buds when I get home. Till this is tamed down

Ya, but folks are buying out the stores. My wife spent several hours trying to do the Saturday shopping. She said none of the scores have any meat. We ate pizza.

Read up on the Spanish Flu, Bob. It really wasn’t Spanish, they think it originated in China. They still don5 really know how many millions died from it. Poo poo it at your own peril. No crowds for me until it dies down.

The survivors will always remember the Great Toilet Paper Panic of 2020. Like Appomattox, Pearl Harbor, Tiny Tim's wedding...
Fortunately I have enough TP to last several months, and didn't have to join the TP frenzy. It seems the madness was confined mostly to paper products, though I did find some frozen vegetables sold out. I didn't look for hand sanitizer, as I have enough Boraxo to last several years.
The inevitable often happens.

waited all year for the annual Chatham VFW pancake breakfast, went on Sunday after the Marrietta show and they shut it down because of all this panic. Wait until a real disaster hits, then what will all these screwballs do?

Would it have anything to do with the litigious society?

You know - "I got sick and its your fault because I went to your club meeting and you should have known better and cancelled it". (Never mind that I had a choice and it was my decision to go and I did not have to go either..... )

I wish someone, ANYONE, would explain just how 60 rolls of toilet paper and 25 cases of bottled water are going to protect anyone from getting the virus?

We have enough toilet paper to last us until this all dies down and then I'm going to buy enough toilet paper to last the rest of my life at a penny a roll since the prices will drop to nothing when no one is buying any.

Good Luck to You All,
Terry

If you need that much toilet paper, sanitizer, etc, You really need to make an appointment with your doctor or go to the ER.

Years in the military, Bio-Warfare you must pretty much be fully covered. All orfices of the human body can allow a virus to enter, eyes, ears, and you all know others. Calm down people, stay clean, eat right, limit exposure, limit stress..., this will pass.

For this topic to be discussed more freely it might oughta been in the non topic but If this is how America and the rest of the world is going to react to a virus, that will pass in a matter of weeks, what the heck would they do if a nuclear accident happened? You know we don't hear or read much from North Korea, but what little I do read on the net,it is NOT good, far worse than most countrys because of lack of medical stuff.
What if warm weather doesn't calm the virus and these people run out of toilet paper? I have always thought I would have to stand guard over my maters and taters ,looks like my 2.5 4 packs of Walmart Black Label toilet paper are more in jeapordy! I just bought a couple 4 packs a week ago,as always when I get to the last pack.Sure glad I did, as Sears and Jc Whitney no longer send out catalogs!

I too hope this is over by Hershey. I found this article on Social Distancing helped put things in perspective for me.

https://www.ariadnelabs.org/resources/a ... -snow-day/

We have not experienced a Pandemic like this in a long time and unfortunately, many folks are treating this like just a snow day. The chart illustrating the urgency of flatting the curve through precautions is why this event is Not just a snow day.

As for the run on TP and water, I think that was attributed to early media reports the Covid-19 symptoms included diareia. Then they mixed in general guidelines for preparing for "emergencies" (think earthquakes, hurricaines where infrastructure could be damaged affected) to have 2 liters of water per person on hand per day for 14 days. Wahala: run on TP and Water IMO. The real tragity here is perceived overreaction due to misinformation may cause others to dismiss true directives (social distancing, etc) as just a snow day.

Stay well, observe precautions, and hope to see you at Hershey!

Our church leadership decided to cancel the usual Sunday school/Bible study and just have worship service, advising we forego the usual hugging and handshaking and go with elbow bumps instead.
I can understand precautjons being taken in times like these, and I know that there will always be those among us that over react and buy up two years worth of toilet paper. We laugh here in our neck of the woods when the forecast is for snow flurries people rush to the grocery stores and clean out the shelves of the bread and milk.Gotta have them milk sandwiches if you get snowed in, you understand.
How many on here are old enough to remember the days when corn cobs were used in place of toilet paper? If you're really country you will remember that white cobs were usually less plentiful than red ones. The right thing to do was, use a red one, then use a white one to see if you needed to use another red one. Now that's good ole country know-how.

I don't think people believe tons of TP and water will protect people from the virus, but rather IF we end up being into "forced quarantine" like in Italy, they will be S.O.L. without said items. Especially water. I do think it would be remotely unlikely water would quit flowing through the pipes, but you never know. And, who keeps Sears Catalogues any more??

I think most are making light of the toilet paper hoarding, not the virus. I am very concerned and serious about the virus. We all need to hope it lessons with the warmer weather coming and this will let us get a handle on it.

At this point I think the hand sanitizer and toilet paper hoarding has more to do with "entrepreneurial" people flipping it on eBay. Just like how on old car forum classifieds you always see people listing a variety of things for at-and-above full retail and you can then turn right around and find where they snagged it off eBay for a low Buy It Now as soon as they got the listing notification in their inbox a couple of days before. (See, you can leave it up now -- I made it old car related :D )

This is why you're seeing the brawls in WalMart and such. The majority of people were not so passionate about hygiene until they discovered they could sell Purell for $5 an ounce and wipes for $1 a sheet. I wouldn't be surprised if the pump dispensers in convenience store bathrooms are getting ripped off the walls.

(The two examples shown are pretty conservative, by the way....)

Tim, I believe quarantine is 14 days even if it was double that, are you going to use 60 rolls? They don't even stock that much in the diarrhea ward. I agree with you on the water supply. Not very much likelihood the supply will run out or dry up.

I might be able to justify this if the virus was a cause of diarrhea or if there was a huge drought and that part of the country was turning into the Sahara desert.

Paper towel I can see. You need stuff to clean and disinfect with and to wipe you mouth/face when you cough/sneeze/vomit. But all of this has NOTHING to do with the opposite end of the food tube.

AAHAA! I think I've figured it out: We'll need water to drink in order to "flush" the virus out, and toilet paper to dry when the flushing is complete. Or maybe just before the flushing is complete. Don't want to leave the porcelain thrown full.

Strangely enough there was a FALSE NEWS report. On March 10, 2020, Now8News published an article positing that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that COVID-19, a disease caused by the new coronavirus, had been found in packages of toilet paper, and that people should start using a wet washcloth to clean themselves instead. Perhaps when this report was refuted some people may have thought they better buy some before it was true - then the rush fed upon itself.

I don't think people are joking about the virus and the harm it can do.Some us are jokeing about the STUPID prices of stuff and the hoarding of stuff and the fact that there is Corona beer, Toyoda Corona wagons and so on.
Humor is sometime good medicine.
We only have about 25 cases of the virus in NC but they have closed down the schools. A good freind that 2 has kids and 1 on the way is self employed. He does mobile tire repair for Tractor trailers, farm machines and such. He will be forced to miss calls, profitable calls, because he will not be able to leave home for over 2 weeks. Who will make up the lost money he needs for his family?
No jokes there and sadly no real answers other that suck it up and shut up while the government tests it's ablity to implement martial law.
You don't realize when you put all your faith in the talking heads on this issue instead of common sense, you are giving up your rights, your freedom to assemble, your freedom of religon. It is also affecting your free speech as you can't assemble and speak. Give the gov a inch, see if they don't take the whole hwy.
BTW, I have a fresh 4 pack of Walmart Black label Toilet tissue I would be willing to trade for a 1958 Lincoln Mark 2 Sedan. :D

People are frightened and feeling helpless. They hear about others buying huge amounts of TP and figure there must be a reason so they do too. I was in a Sam's club Thursday and they were cleaned out of TP so people were buying paper shop towels and the like. Purell? Gone too.... A lot of things were disappearing from the shelves.

You can't see a virus and people carrying it don't necessarily appear sick. The only way to protect yourself is to isolate yourself as much as possible which is sometimes easier said than done. I fear that before this is over we will see both the best and worst in humanity.... the biggest mistake we can all make is to assume that this is a lot of fuss over nothing. We will all have to adapt and make concessions if we're going to get through this. We also need to realize that the ripple effects from this will extend far into the future. Life may never get back to what you remember as normal.

Yes people are afraid but mostly for the wrong reasons. Fuss over nothing? Hardly. This is without a doubt the biggest attack on free assembly in the history of the world. If buying TP helps people cope, more power to them.

We here on this side of the pond are now offically under lockdown, all sports events, meetings, restaurants etc are closed.
Went to the shops saturday to do the normal shopping and it dawned on me, not only the toiletpaper was all gone but so were the canned beans, now that figures, if your daily menu consists of canned beans you will need all the toiletpaper you can get

I went to eat breakfast this morning.Mostly normal except they had took the jelly and such from the table and just brought what you ask for. Went to the bank to get money out to pay my car insurance, all normal. But once I got to the insurance office, got out of the truck and petted the dog and went to the door of the office it got weird. The door flew open about 6 inches, and a hand reached out. I gave it my money and the bill. The door slammed shut. A couple minutes later a confuesd and frightened agent came out and gave me my 4 cents change and a receipt carefully,as if I were on fire or something. He said,"sorry,no one knows what to do,thanks for the understanding" .I had not said a word ,but I could feel myself standing there looking dumbfounded. It was like I was a leper and my left arm just fell off or something. I just mumbled "ok" and got back in my truck and left.

A bats body temp averages 105.So his "bugs" are hard for our bodys to kill off using fever.
I have checked and can't find anything about it,but I am just wondering if our neighbor hood deer, squrriels and birds that carry tick, fleas will bringing it to the back yards of people staying home, kinda nulling the whole reason for those to stay home? Also I dont think mosquitos understand english well enough to know to stay home.
At breakfast this morning I talked to the milk man. He has to order supplys a week ahead. He is now sitting on 2 semi trailers of half pint milks that were supposed to go to the county schools. I mentioned he would probably have to donate it to a food kitchen or something. He said there are no retail outlets that have space for that small amount cartons. Who is eating the cost of that milk?
Yea,the economy is going to suffer at that rate bad,and quicker than you want to imagine.1 of the invisable enemys right now may very well be the virus, but the other is outright fear. Heart attacks, strokes, sucicides will be on the up tick at time goes by. Not something we want for sure.

Fear is playing a role, no doubt. However, an invisible virus with multiple modes of transmission is definitely something to avoid. Covid-19 is something new and appears to have a greater mortality rate than flu, which alone was expected to kill up to 30,000 Americans this year. Multiply that by a factor of 10, 20 or 30.....you see the problem.

This is a time to pull together. Cries of fake news, conspiracy, liberal plot, etc., aren't helping anybody. Listen to the scientists, accept that things have to change for awhile and do what is needed to keep yourself and others safe.

Although I do believe the rulings of putting millions of people in apartment buildings with central heat and air units ,no long term food storage and so on is abit like making a petri dish for the virus some caution is needed. Mostly comnon sense.

What's gonna happen is gonna happen. The panic is going to have unintended results. Close schools? Where do they kids go? To stay with Grandma, 'cause Mama's still gotta work. Her bills don't quit coming just because of a virus. Who's more susceptible to the virus than Mama? Grandma! So let's send these asymptomatic virus carrying kids to go infect Grandma. How do i know? Got two grandkids at the house right now 'cause their parents still have to work. Are kids really less likely to contract the virus if they are NOT in school? Or does the government just want to be able to say they didn't get it in OUR school?

I got bills to pay. I'm gonna work until they tell me I can't. Hopefully, when that time comes, they will give me a laptop and I can work from home, but given the file sizes that we are constantly uploading and downloading at work, I don't know that I can afford the data. There is an overabundance of caution in my opinion and it is gonna kill the economy and bankrupt a lot of businesses and common folks.

I've got toilet paper and the means to get whatever else I need if we descend into pure anarchy. Bet the banks will still be working and sending out eviction notices no matter how bad it gets.

You are correct Hal, the past due notices will be in the mail shortly for alot of people regardless of what the talking heads say on tv.
I may be nuts, but I made a decision the other day I was going to try to continue to live as normal a life as I can.To worry about all this and prompt a heart attack is just as dangerous as a virus.I don't just go to town and stand around on the corner kissing all the grannys walking by. I go where I need to,get what I need and come home. This anti social thing might work a few days. But just as during prohibition, there will a resurgance of the Speak Easy's. Somone's basement or empty warehouse will have a door with a peep hole and a pass word and people will congrigate. It is human,it is normal. And to try to force abnormality on millions of people over the course of a week is just not going to fly over well.
My legit concerns that even the liberal minded person shouldn't have a qualm with is the fact that family can't visit and check up on folks in the nursing homes now.Abuse was already rampant in that system as I know my grandmother was a victum.Domestic violence is another thing.A man and woman or ,let me be politicaly correct, 2 partners, normally have time away from each other as they work and are out in the outside world. Couped up in a 3 room apartment in a 20 story building for weeks on end with bologna and cheese crackers and the internet down is going to prompt bad moods, arguements, fights, and shootings. Let's hope not.But what is to prevent it? And don't die any time soon if you have any freinds and family. Can't gather over 10 people at the time so no decent funeral.Truck drivers will have to carry camping gear with them or plenty of beef jerky as they can't fit thru a drive thru at the KFC.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have received COVID-19 emails from every entity I have ever communicated with. Insurance companies, Car dealerships, hardware suppliers, tool companies – the list goes on and on.

Does anyone remember the worldwide panic of 1999 that caused totally unrelated entities to send out statements of compliance?

Bob

I do, and frankly it was far more serious than late-night comedians would have you believe. My wife worked for the 2nd largest insurer in the world then, as an administrative assistant. Due to programmer shortage for COBOL, in late 1996, her company gave "aptitude tests" to all employees who wanted one. She passed the test and was trained as quickly as possible to program in COBOL. She wasn't even fully proficient, but she could plug a low level gap in programers that were grabbed up to fix the BIG problems, and her salary quadrupled. There was total and real panic at the company and by Nov '99, she said that she thought they would be OK with a few hiccups. They were, but she was still VERY busy 3 years later. 2004 she was no longer needed, taking a salary too high to be justified and was laid off. Main point is her company saw disaster, got all hands on deck, and was still patching things 3 years later. No, the sewer plant didn't explode at midnight, but it was a MUCH bigger deal than any business ever let on.

I sat down in front of the boob tube tonight and watched most of the news cast.
Very confusing. First, I learn that the Wuhan virus can live 3 hours in the air and up to 3 days on stainless steel.
Then I learn that the state is closeing most of the dmv offices, so if you are buying a car or your tag is flat, good luck.
I also learned that the shopping malls are closing. There are 12 places set up for parents to grab and go lunchs for the kids.
The walking trail along the train tracks in charlotte had over 3000 people on it today, jogging, holding hands, everyone just haveing a great time.
And the news guy said,"with the warm weather tommorow it will be a great day to get out in the fresh air and go to the FARMERS MARKET to get some fresh vegis! :? Didn't you just preach to me about social distancing, while your weather lady is talking on the tv from HOME instead of the tv station studio? Didn't you just tell me I can't go to the mall, the dmv and that the virus can live from 3 hours in the air to 3 days on metal?
HELLO?????? A open market place in Wuhan China got this whole thing rolling in the first place! Granted the famers market here is cleaner and there is not the "nasty" stuff like was over there. But I could not help but notice the confusing information

"I didn't look for hand sanitizer, as I have enough Boraxo to last several years." Steve, would you elaborate?
I should know but forget about good ol' Boraxo.
Gave a young fellow at work (with a small daughter that has an immune deficiency of some kind and he's spooked) two bottles of hand sanitizer as he couldn't find any out in the stores.
I'd like to offer more options to him...

I could type about ClO2 but that's really fringe so I won't.

I talked to a friend today on the phone. He was working on his Model T. He had a guy come by the shop to deliver something. After the guy left he thought about it and sprayed the door know down with brake cleaner. I don't know if that will work but it made him feel better.

Brake clean is some BAD stuff. DON"T EVER spray it on something and then heat it,say with a torch. It will make a poisonous gas that 1 huff will cause brain damage,a second huff will put you in the ground.
I made the almost fatal mistake of spraying it on a foam air filter on a lawn mower engine. I blew it out and thought I was done. Put it all together, cranked it up and as I backed out of the shop I was being chased by a white cloud.I shut the machine off and let it coast fast down the hill to get away from the smoke. That stuff should kill a virus but no way to really know.

There were reports of people having permanent damag from breathing brake n parts cleaner on a forum a couple of years ago. I think it was this one. I would not use it inside.
Some little kids are taught to give peopl a hug when they are greeted with hello and goodbye and to give grandpa a kis, grandma too. My three grand daughters were. The ten and the eleven year olds listen, read and understand about this thing.
But every time the four year old leaves the house or comes home I shudder when she jumps on me and I feel her breath go down my breathing tube as she gets too close for comfort.
There are four adults and three kids here most of the time if any one gets the virus we will all get it.
The little one will surely get it from whoever gets it first and will pass it on to everybody else. I’m so sure of that that I don’t even see any sense in taking precautions anymore,
I’m 83, have had open heart surgery and taking prescriptions that are killing my immune system. I will be damn lucky if I get through this alive.

Aaron

if there are that many adults in the house, it isn't the child who is at fault when they're all over you. I wish you luck in educating the adults around you.

I on the other hand have an invincible father approaching 90. His idea of social distancing is to drive further to visit friends.

You're due more respect and protection than you're getting, and my dad needs to understand that this is not going to be over before he needs another haircut.

All my best to you.

I am considered rebelous myself but I get it honest,my dad is going to be 86 in June, and he was out riding his 69 Electroglide yesterday after filing the points on it. He said yesterday, "damn it I am 86 years old,I aint got long to live and I aint sitting in this damn chair and dieing from bordom and depression". And I know him well enough to know, you gently mention something a few times until maby it dawns on him and he thinks it is his idea. Then maby you can change his mind a touch.
Mark my words folks,I hope I am so wrong, but sucicides and domestic violence will uptick in the coming weeks. Depression is talked about alot in the younger folks and they seek medicines and visits with docs. Old people just take it as old age and die a slow death.

Yes they are nuts. I went to the bank today. The main lobby is closed. The walk up window is to be used inside. Well instead of spreading out in the bank " social distanceing" you are in a 6x10 area with several others. You cannot see inside so you open the door and there they are. Wait outside? Drive up? I get what they are trying to do but think it through people!!!

LOL

This is really funny..
I’ll start by saying that my wife and I listened to our parents when they told us about the depression and trained us to not waste things. Although we are affluent we shop with coupons (only get what we normally use) and don’t fall for the marketing hype.

A few weeks before this started my wife got a few packages of TP from BJs with coupons and they were hi octane items that gave us an additional $0.10 per gallon off for an already low gasoline price. If I remember correctly we paid $1.50 a gallon to fill my truck which was almost empty. Saved something like $15.00 compared to the other low price gas in the area.

Last night I counted the rolls of TP we still have.. there are 96 rolls of untra soft TP in the our stash and the package claims that each roll is 4x the normal roll.

I am not a rip-off guy but I am willing to trade a roll of TP for a good bottle of red wine — we prefer Pinot noir or Cabinet franc but will consider others.

Working today down in Cincinnati and went through the drive thru at frisch’s big boy. At the end of ordering she ask if we wanted any toilet paper. I think they are trying to help? She was serious. Made me laugh which helps in these times

Costco adopted a new hours policy. On Tuesdays and Thursdays they are open 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM for seniors (over 60) only. It started today. I headed out about 7:30 thinking I'd pickup a few things we need. I arrived in front of the parking lot at about 7:45 AM. The place looked like an ant hill. I didn't even attempt to get into the parking lot. I hooked a U-turn and went to a nearby grocery, which was not similarly impacted, and found everything we needed with no crowd.

None of us actually know how long this situation will last, but dang. Folks need to get a grip.

If you think the toilet paper hoarding is bad, look for active dry yeast. Go to Ebay and look at what these folks are doing, $50.00 and up for a 4oz. jar. Most of them have probably never bought or used yeast in their lives, but now they need it. I bake a bread that I like to have because I can't find anything like it anywhere and OOPS! I did not have any yeast when I went to make a loaf. Don't know when I will get any, I am patient and I can wait.

First. I think I need to stop reading the adventures of KD before going on to the rest of OT. It takes a few minutes to get my brain back into our universe?

My wife wanted to bake some cookies the other day, she does that occasionally. But we were low on flour and Crisco. I had to go to the store for a few things, so added those to the list. Got to the store. NO flour, NO sugar, NO shortening, and I KNOW most of the people in this town couldn't bake a loaf of bread if their lives depended upon it!
As for TP, I usually buy the BIG many jumbo or mega rolls case size package. I do so because I am a cheapskate, and I have done the math. Buying that way saves several dollars over the usual small packages. A case lasts almost a month. Fortunately, I had bought a case about two days before the panic hit! Hasn't been much in the store since, but I suspect the shelves will be full before I need more. And if not? That is what catalogs are for.

My wife is the manager of our local grocery store, keep in mind our town has around 1200 residents (depends on if you come into the East side of town, or the South, yep, two different populations posted :? . Customers are driving her nuts, (Me too. ) The local customers for the most part are pretty cool, they understand whats going on. The problem is with the out of town customers, yep, the ones that are from the "big" cities. She had a lady come into the store a couple of days ago that she had never seen before and she bought a fairly large cart full of stuff, probably about a hundred dollars worth or so. As my Wife was helping her unload the cart, this Di%$$@** woman had the nerve to say that our store hadn't prepared enough for this "crisis" because she couldn't find everything that she wanted. My Wife asked her why she had come our local store, yep, all of the big stores in St, Joe MO. were sold out of everything that she wanted. You can't make this stuff up.   Dave

Living in New York State we are seeing it creep out into our county. People are dying. The big stores are usually out of paper but the very small stores at gas stations and little corner shops have toilet paper and paper towels. What I can’t understand is hoarding bottled water. We have decent tap water here in Rochester.

We have great tap water here in Hamilton Ohio also. The guns and ammo hoarding has begun too. Online ammo sales are all tapped out with prices almost doubled. I don’t get it either.

Lot's of baloney floating around out there. Our county sheriff has publicly stated that the governors "stay home" order lacks specificity and therefore his department will be unable to enforce it. Meanwhile, the city police department has started stopping people, asking, "Where are you going?", then issuing misdemeanor citations if they believe the trip does not fit the "essential" definition.

This whole situation has some really ugly potential on several levels.

Law enforcement is in a terribly difficult position with this. The Constitution, under the Privileges and Immunities Clause, and Case Law is clear that they may not ask you "where you are going?", restrict your movement with regard to travel nor detain you unless for suspicion of a crime. You are NOT required to give them anything unless they detail what crime they are suspicious that you have committed, and then at that point, you are only required to identify yourself. Regardless, you are not required to give them any information regarding where you're going or any other detail of any kind with which they may build a "case" against you. While it is against our nature, we are allowed to simply look at them in silence. The Constitution has been shredded enough already during this time...there is no need to relinquish any more rights. Precident has been set and what we have lost will be difficult to regain.

That said, once you have held up and retained your God given rights, a responsible person would absolutely comply with what local authorities are requesting.

I cannot imagine the difficult position our law enforcement professionals are being put into with these edicts or how they will react to them. It is certainly easier on them, and best for our communities, to be a responsible person, but we are certainly free to be jerks, as is evidenced by Spring Breakers.

Scott,

You are absolutely correct. Not only are there a lot of "jerks" running loose out there, I fear some who are worse than just jerks will view this whole situation as an opportunity. My son is a law enforcement officer in a neighboring county. Some of the stories he tells about encounters with some people are incredible.

I guess the best we can do, as you said, is "{be} a responsible person" and encourage others to do the same.

Is the law going to walk around with 2 yard stickes taped together and if you look to be less than 6 foot from someone you get a ticket? How the heck can they enforce some of these rules with no more man power than is avalaible?

I know the locals in the little town I go to have been noticably ABSENT.
IF you google it there are alot of citys that have publicly stated they are not jailing prostitutes and what not right now.
A Dog catcher sheriffs truck flew by awhile ago but his dad lives a couple houses down so that was where he was headed.
NC just got the state at home something or other state wide starting monday. 30 friggen days!
I wont' go on a rant but this aint New York. we aint got it as bad as those folks and I wish them the best but It is getting excessive with all the orders and such.
Since I am on the board of directors of our fire department I kinda keep up with the calls they go on. The 1 sad thing I have noticed is a uptick in Overdose-poisoning calls in the trailer park about 5 miles from here. Not positive because of the big Hippo law,but from what I can tell, chances are it is Younger people, away from school, getting into stuff they aint aware of the dangers of. Watch out for those youngan's.

The Russians and Chinese must be giving themselves a dope-slap thinking about all $$ they spent on all of the nukes they built to bring down the Free World. Who would have thought that a virus would have nations willingly give up their freedom, their wealth and security all while living in a state of quivering fear. My county is larger than the entire state of Rhode Island. We have one patient. The populous is shuttered down and businesses are going bankrupt...and in our instance, for nothing...absolutely nothing. Perhaps it will be prudent 30 days from now, but it is plain stupid right now. NYC has a real problem, as do other population centers, so lets be sure and cage up the other 99% of the US land mass' residents and demand that they go broke and possibly starve the country at the same time. Nations and freedom die and not a shot fired. Sad and shameful.

My county: over 6,900 square miles within it's boundarys. 4 people per square mile. One case. Businesses closed and friends going bankrupt. STUPIDITY.

New York City: 302 square miles. 28,525 people per square mile. Tens of thousands ill. Remain home. Not so stupid.

We are not a homogeneous people living in common circumstances and surroundings. A single fix, potentially FATAL to our economy and nation is not shortsighted...it is criminally intentional.

We are apparently a nation void of common sense, with a strong desire to have our hand held and told what to do, and willingly accept the yoke of Tyranny. SHAMEFUL!

The nuttier among us will say that to continue some level of commerce is valuing $$ over lives. My response to that is "why leave the hospitals open then?" Those people are working tirelessly, they are becoming ill through exposure, many are dying, and yet we expect them to care for US if we need it. Isn't that a bit selfish? I strongly suggest that those passionate about closing things down entirely stay home and deal with their own health needs so that the doctors, nurses and other support people can stay home, too. THAT will TRULY place peoples lives above $$.

As far as solutions, any good microbiologist would tell people to do whatever it takes to eradicate this thing, and some have said that to ensure no "waves" of this, it might take 6+ months. There is no world outside of the microscope and no need to worry about $$ unless of course it means that their funding stops. Any honest auto designer would tell you that to STOP the 1.2 MILLION auto fatalities per year would require the elimination of all automobiles. Doesn't every child's life count?? Every problem has a perfect solution if you totally ignore the unintended concequences that usually kill more than the solution saves. if your only tool is a hammer, every problem is a nail, and the most strident Academics usually have only 1 tool and one focus: their field. Bless their hearts, but resourseful and creative people have a tool box. Our forefathers had toolboxes. We have academics. If they have the only solution, and the power through force to apply it evenly even where not needed, then God help us.

Scott---I can`t agree with ALL you said but certainly agree that “containment” as mandated, is harmful, expensive and inconvenient. My SUGGESTED CURRENT PRIORITY: Quick ,accurate testing to identify the “positives”, so that they can be “contained” and other citizens can go about their daily lives. The only real “fix” is a cure or vaccine, to end the panic, the sooner the better.......Paul

When this thing first got hold on the US, a plague ship was docked in California,a plague ship is docking in Florida today if it is not already there with over a 100 cases on it. The virus lived 17 days on that first ship . Yet when the people that were turned loose in 2 weeks from getting off the ship went home, the red dots started showing up on our maps. Seeding?
That ship in florida should be floating at sea somewhere with a helicopter lowering medicines and food to it. Leave it out there until the illness pass's.Don't bring that much more to the mainland as caretakers coming on and off the ship will spread it.
North carolina is going to a stay at home order monday. BUT in issueing that order, GOLF courses area apparntly essential as they can stay open!
There is so much tension in the air, people are bored, frustrated, tired of eating their own cooking, but now we have 30 more days!
Oh boy!

Darn it,Turns out there is 2 affordable fenders in the classified section but they are over 2 hours away and that would not be "essential" travel, so 2 usable fenders may be lost to the dump.

I've sailed aboard the "Plague Ship" (Zaandam) a couple of times and can only imagine what they are going thru. Most of the cabins aren't much bigger than a cell so being on lockdown has got to be difficult, especially the interior cabins. I was supposed to be on her sister ship the Veendam earlier this week, but that cruise got cancelled (lucky for us!) Holland America tends to attract a lot of older folks so forcing them to stay at sea will be a death sentence for some. They just aren't equipped to deal with a lot of sick people.

One way other nations have slowed their infection rates and avoided some of the problems we've had is by more extensive testing. The US has really dropped the ball in that department so we don't know which of those healthy looking individuals walking around is spreading the virus. In a nearby county there was a group of old guys who before the lockdown would 'get together every weekday morning for coffee and BS. Now there are eight guys with Covid19, two on ventilators, circling the drain to put it crudely.

Places like Montana may be sparsely populated but that doesn't mean they are immune. A little over two weeks ago we were congratulating ourselves on the fact that Michigan had no cases and now we're approaching 4000 with over a hundred dead. Right now, isolation is the only tool we've got, and even that is imperfect. The collateral damage is going to be far more extensive than anyone has yet realized and I'm with many of you in wishing we could find a better way to limit the spread without shutting everything down. I hope you folks in the sparsely populated areas of the country fare better and maybe you can come up with some ideas the rest of us can use. In the meantime, everyone do your best to protect yourself, your family and neighbors.

We had a bit of a scare at our house this past week. Linda (my wife) got real sick, fast. For three days, she was sick as the proverbial dog. And she was scared. She nearly died a year ago from the flu which turned into pneumonia, and has several other underlying health issues. Along about Thursday, she decided she wanted to get tested. So, she made a few phone calls. The hospital told her (newspaper confirmed this earlier) that she needed to call before going into the hospital. She did, and the hospital said she needed a referral first! Her doctor wasn't available until the next day, maybe. There was confusion at the clinic about what she should do, they might have an answer tomorrow. And, IF they sent her to the hospital, the ER would first test her for several other possible diseases (no actual number given, but they ran off about six to eight things!) BEFORE they would approve the COVD19 test. AND she would have to test negative for all those other tests! One of the other diseases she would have to test negative for is strep throat. But she was identified as a carrier of strep throat almost thirty years ago. She has had it a few times, and was told she MIGHT carry it for her entire life!
I suspect they don't have enough tests STILL, so are trying to avoid using them.
So all the media hype about going in and getting tested? For THIS?
Probably just the regular flu, she seems to be much better now.

I said from the beginning of this outbreak that I wasn't really afraid of the disease. Frankly, the numbers it presents are bad, but not so much so that it would decimate any significant portion of the world's population. What does really scare me? Is that the repercussions and the mishandling, due to incompetence and self-serving politics, could result in an economic collapse that itself could kill many times more people than the disease itself ever will.

I know 2 people personally that came down with Pnemonia and need to be in the hospital but were refused.
Another man in such shape from a head injury he has to be lifted from the bed with a crane to be bathed, is in Really bad shape. He went to the hospital about 3 weeks ago, kept him for a day or 2, got the fever down and shot him back out the door. Only his wife to do for him and a nurse that comes by once in a while. These 3 people under normal situations would be in the hospital and be cared for. There is only 3 cases in the county 1 of them lives in and at the time there was NONE in the county 1 fellow was in,so the hospitals at that time were NOT over capacity. A couple days of treatment in the hospital, might have these fellows in much better health now.
If you can't help em, don't hinder em'
