Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Those are the best. We had this one in Pocatello years ago. They claimed it was 1 cylinder. I would have thought 2. I was smitten for several years by the 2 cylinder REOs and gathered parts for one until I bought my Buick.
When did I do that?

They certainly are wonderful. Here is a 2017 post showing some of them including Gary Hammond's replica:

Leo, you might get the intention of this. Dale used to run the Jeffrey quad truck thru his four wheel steering paces in the parades.
Smooth four cylinder, Wisconsin? engine. Dale at the controls, me on the mic...
There's a Jeffrey hiding close by.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Duey i really like those FWD and Quads, there are a small number of them around still on our side of the pond, left behind in 1918, most are FWDs, a Quad is rare as hens teeth,
The FWD is a more 'normal' truck technically speaking with differentials and axles sort of like we still use today, but the Quad is a very interesting piece of original engineering for its day, it has 'dead' axles with the differentials on top delivering power to the wheel by an early 'portal axle' concept not unlike todays Unimogs.
I never saw one up close in real life and i imagine i could spend a whole day under one 'looking up its skirt' to find out the details of that drive system it i ever get the chance
Here's some footage of one that is in the collection of the Texas based Pioneer Flight Museum:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux-PBa-HQgg
The very few times i found a Quad that was for sale it was WAY above my budget, and buying a wreck is not an option as you will have to fabricate every missing part because the sparepart situation is nonexistant

Herb,
Great truck picture. I bet the tarp weighs as much as the truck! I hope it doesn't blow off when he winds the truck up into high gear!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
American LaFrance and others built tractors to pull steam powered pumping engines previously pulled by horses. The first photo is one I saw in parades during the '60s. I was impressed by the chain driven front wheels and the ingenious design to drive and steer them.
These photos were of the mechanisms of ones in the Rithie Clyne Museum in Vegas.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I posted this photo elsewhere of the line-up of Ahrens-Fox trucks at the Richie Clyne museum. Their "chromed sphere above the pump held air and smoothed the outgoing pressure fluctuations from the piston pump". (Wikipedia) As I recall there were 6 or 7 but I didn't get them all in the picture.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
We had a couple of those Autocar truck chassis in our area in the 60s. They had been made into wagons. There were no engines but we often thought of trying to piece one together. There must have been hubcaps or data plates because we knew they were Autocar.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Well I got to thinking today and I thought about revisiting this story about my Grandfathers truck:
http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/50 ... 1448119649
It turns out that I found out more since the story was told the first time.
I told my uncle who had sold the truck to the family I bought it back from that I had it. He replied that he was there the day grandpa bought the truck in 1948. It was bought used about a quarter mile up the road from where I live, from my dad's uncle Hubert Iffrig. It is now from both sides of my family.

That is such a great story. Thanks for reminding us.
My Grandfather had a 1935 Ford truck that was kept in the family for years. I had custody of it for a time. I'll see if there are any photos around of it.

Those are some crazy wheels aren't they?
Kenworth 1920 +/-. The KW on the radiator might be enhanced for the photo.
I see where Kenworth celebrated 90 years in 2013.

These two White trucks have quite the loads. A typical Goodyear Diamond Tread tire adorns the radiator.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Wow! What a great photo. Some of my favorite things.
I didn't feel the Quake. Joy was on the phone talking to our Daughter in Boise at the time and she (our daughter) was feeling it.
The White truck has acetylene light forks with electrics adapted to them. Typical for those years. Probably a Model 20 White.
The motorcycle is probably an Indian. The front leaf doesn't show well here but it's brace does.
Cool photo, perhaps 1924 or so.
Thanks
Rich

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
These were my first venture into the truck world.
Yep, that's me in the Chevron uniform on break. I purchased the pair for $250, half of my Summer salary, in 1966. The previous owner wanted the wrecker frame back for scrap. That is a TT rear end that winds the cable via a Ford ('36?) transmission mounted behind the White transmission. Idling both in low the vehicle barely moved. The wrecker had been Bus 199 in Yellowstone Park in 1923.When did I do that?

I haven't really recovered but have pretty much run out of space. Folks still drop stuff off on their way to the dump. You know how it is.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Well I spend plenty of time in the back yard dreaming.
As parts are where you find them I picked up a 3rd Monster which had been made into a buckrake. It came in handy as it had been a Bus too. In particular the rear axle shafts were good in this one. The shafts had been twisted in the wrecker and the bigger truck had a different axle. Some traveling fabricators passed through the Dillon, Mt area and converted dozens of White Park Buses and big Buicks into these machines during the depression when farm equipment was hard to get.
I thought I had too much stuff until I visited a guy in Northern MT that had 22 of these chassis. Half or more were from the Dillon area. At one point he offered them to me.
Nope! Not me!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I borrowed this from the Tenwheel site. They were sometimes a little bit more bronze than this. The YPC rotated them through the paint shop almost continually I am told. The thickness of the remaining paint on mine wass proof of that.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Nice restoration Bob. It looks great!
I ran across pictures of our local Nash Quad. Joe was encouraged to go recover this abandon truck. It was frozen to the ground but we managed to free it. Joe did quite a bit of work on it. Finally another fellow took interest and claimed it had been in the Family since it was new. The new owner did a nice restoration on it and it has been to several of our shows since.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
That's a really net looking rig. Why do each of them have 3 axles with one in the center? For that matter, why are the center wheels larger than the others? Seems odd to me but I suppose there was a good reason at the time.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
The large wheels with lugs are drive wheels? Maybe the two rear units are unfinished trucks? They appear to have the same setup. Wonder if front and rear wheels are steer axles? Very interesting !

Shorpy photos are the best. This one is clear enough to see the striping on the frame. The Adlake side lamps and radiator shocks are typical of the White Trucks.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Herb I,
I would say that your three times Three axle monsters are electric powered.
You will notice two steering wheels one on top of the other, one for direction and the other for the voltage / current control into the electric motors of each of the three wheel unit.
you car also see cables hanging between the first and second unit.....N.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
It certainly is. The TT chassis looks familiar but I can't tell what cowl that Ford firewall is grafted into. Buicks and Overlands had rounded ones but the windshield doesn't match what I have seen. It looks a lot like a Maxwell windshield but not the cowl. I'll bet that dump bed got a lot of use.
When did I do that?
