WTB Split Rim Lock Screws
Want to buy : FOUR split rim lock screws used on the late style 21" split rims that holds the two ends of the split rim together. Lang's catalog part number is 2877 B. Lang's lost their supplier on these and only recently has found a new supplier, but they said it may be 3 to 4 weeks before they are back in stock, again. This is the only thing that is keeping me from mounting new tires. I bought some of these several years ago from Lang's but have misplaced them. if you can help, post your contact information or send me a private message via the discussion forum. Thanks. T. Woods

Are these the 3/8 fine thread style, if there is enough interest can crank up the lathe and make some up. Would be $5.00 a piece. Please provide the dimensions as I have none laying about.

Hank, As I don't have one laying around to measure, I'll have to approximate the diameter of the round head and thickness of the screw head, Since they are round, they have a screwdriver slot in them for tightening. I'll also check the length and depth of the threads and the thread size and type. Terry

If anyone has a lock screw that they can measure and verify my measurements that I provided to Hank, this is what I have measured on my rims: Round screw head diameter - 1/2". Round head thickness - 1/8" (wouldn't hurt if they were 3/16"). Screw thread length - 1/4" - 9/32". Thread size is what I'm not sure on. 3/8"x24 is definitely too fine a thread, My threads are coarser than that. Probably 3/8"x16.

My rims have 5/16 x 24 thread, bolt is 3/4 inch long and the head has to be 7/8 or one inch otherwise it won’t hold and the bolt head will fall into the hole that is supposed to hold the whole thing together. I spoke to Hank and he told me that a grade five bolt with the head shaved down thin, while you can still get a wrench on it, with a very thin washer under the bolthead would also do the trick if you are in a hurry. After these things are available again you replace them with the proper screw and no downtime lost. Check for yourself the size and thread count, this is what I have but yours may be different. Frank

Frank, unless I and Lang's are mistaken, the round head of the split rim screw is supposed to "fall in the hole in the latch plate, more or less forming a "button" on the rim. It is not supposed to cover the entire hole in the latch plate. As I said, I had ordered some from Lang's previously in 2015 and the dimensions that I posted above, mirror the dimensions of those screws. I just can't find the little bastards.

Terry, I am not here to argue with you. Yesterday I did as Hank told me and added a thin flat washer under the ground down head of the bolt and installed it. The washer is larger than the hole of the latch plate and it holds the whole thing together. If the screw falls into the hole of the latch plate there is no purpose for the screw and it just sits there. Look at the drawing and description in the Lang’s catalog and it may make more sense. As always, you are free to do whatever you are happy with on your car. This is just the experience of trial and frustration on my car and the results I came up with. Happy T-ing. Frank

Original thread size is 5/16-24 sae, check out thread condition of the rim , out of the last 5 I mounted I had to custom fit 2 screws because the threads were loose and the "button" head has to cover the hole in the "Tab" portion of the rim to hold it together.

O.K. I am probably wrong about the head of the screw, covering, or not covering, the hole in the tab. Lang's says they should have them in about two weeks, so I'll just wait until I get my backorder from them.

I went out and looked at the spare tire I have for the 21. There is a boss on the rim that fits into the hole in the latch, so yes the retaining screw head does sit on the outside. I was thinking the same as you Terry. Once the tire is installed and inflated the latch seems to stay in place without the screw esp when installed on the wheel, I am not recommending this but has been done in the past. I too need a few of these screws but just have not got around to ordering them.

UPDATE : Lang's, finally has these in stock. I got my back order today. They shouldn't run out for a while as their initial order to their new supplier was for 1000 of these. Be sure to check your rims to make sure a previous owner hasn't modified the tapped hole these screw into, Two of my five rims have oversize holes and unless I find a way to return them to the original size, I may have to make a trip to Lowe's and buy and modify some modern bolts.
