Looked at a TT today
I looked at a TT today and it was in a very tight space, but I was able to turn the crank. It was easy to turn and when I put it in high or stepped on the peddle for low, the rear wheels did not turn! Could the drive shaft be disconnected? Could it be a broken crank? Next weekend I will be able to take a better look at it. Thanks

the TT is a worm drive vehicle with very low gearing. Perhaps with 1 or 2 partial turns of the engine, you simply did not detect movement but there in fact WAS movement. Often these vehicles were fitted with an auxilliary transmission to give them an overdrive, or speed more similar to that of a standard T of the day. These transmissions frequently had a neutral.
Beyond that, not nearly enough information to analyze.

As Scott mentioned, the TT is low geared, so there should have been some movement, but depending how many turns you made,, that movement may have been very small.
Check if it has an auxillary gearbox installed - usually an extra gear shift pops up from the floor. If so this MAY be in neutral (which can be an issue but we will lead you through that later...).
If a rear axle is broken you may get no movement either, but like Scott said as well, there is not really enough info to define if there is a problem, and if there is one, it could be broken crank, broken rear axle, broken Ruckstell (if one is fitted in rear diff), broken output shaft or none of the above :-0

Hello everyone, so i went to take a closer look at the TT today. I discovered that it is equipped with a 2 speed Ruxtull. To further search for the cause of the problem at hand, i removed the oil fill plug in the axle and told a friend of mine to turn the crank. I observed the driveshaft turning but nothing else. So the "disconnect" problem is in the axle, what could be a common problem as to what exactly is broken? Also the engine and trans has never been touched (Factory). Thank you

Could be a worn Ruckstell in a neutral position which they are not supposed to have.

Thank you Joe, Now the axle has this "neutral" no matter what position the shifter is in. And are parts available for a one ton ruxtull?

How do you know? It's possible, but 90+ years is a long time.
are parts available for a one ton ruxtull?
Ruckstell parts come from Chaffin's, but I don't know how many are for the truck version. I'd call and ask.

Steve... all i mean by that is that the engine still has the 2-piece valves and most likely hasn't been rebuilt, same goes for the trans. Well they sure look like they haven't been rebuilt.

Ruckstells usually can't get 'stuck' in neutral. If they do it could be the thrust plate breaking (as happened to me...)
If that is the case you may find another by asking around. A replacement may take a bit of machining, but it is a 'doable' repair without spending too much.
Even with the plate broken I still had drive in 'low' speed. So try changing the lever to engage each speed to see if that is the case.
The mechanism is probably well and truly gummed up with the old thick oil setting like treacle, and that may also be holding the change lever from working the gears.
If that is the case you may find another by asking around. A replacement may take a bit of machining, but it is a 'doable' repair without spending too much.

A Whiteman... I have tried moving the shifter, it moves into both positions with a sharp "snap" but still the wheels do not move.

If possible, pull the Ruckstell apart, all will be revealed
BUT
Don't start the job until you have the MTFA Ruckstell book (available from suppliers). It is a very helpful guide to pulling down, repair and re-assembly of the Rucklstell.
Have a go, it looks like all around the world we are going to be stuck at home for a while, so something to do

Well Jonathan, how did you come out on the TT? I too think that's a very fair deal, the doors alone would be worth a good portion of the asking price if they are as good as they look and that dump bed is very fixable with a bit of work. Keep us posted. Dave
