WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Today, I cleaned up 4 old Champion X spark plugs and installed them in my 26 Coupe and took it for a drive to test the new Brassworks radiator.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
We are installing the coil ring in Dad's 1920 Touring, the prior owner left it out for some reason. That lead to resurfacing the head, replacing the cast pistons with domed alum, new 4th main and a few other things as is usually the case. My 1915 Runabout is getting spindle refurbishment including rethreading the axle. We bought these cars last spring, both builders had passed away so we are discovering and repairing as we go.

Finished two carburetors for Model T's, in the mail tomorrow. Did NOT have a leap year date last night or Sunday dinner with my somewhat significant other. Just came in from the shop.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
I bought a complete headlight for Henrietta at the Ballarat swap meet on the weekend. One of hers had a slightly damaged reflector, but this replacement has an almost perfect one. When I removed the rim and lens it revealed about the best light I had ever worked on. With the replacement reflector fitted to Henrietta, I rebuilt the new purchase for resale. However, it is a perfect match condition-wise for the ones on the car, so it is in the shelves as a matching spare if ever i need one.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Pulled the exhaust manifold, checked it, media blasted it, and repainted it with "flame proof" paint, 2 coats of primer, 2 of color, and man, it turned out pretty. The flameproof black is kind of a matte black, so it really pops.
Then feeling ambitious, pulled the winfield carb and manifold, separated the 2, media blasted the manifold and immediately (well, within 2 minutes of coming out of the blaster) coated it with clear lacquer, and darn, it sure is PRETTY! Still thinking about how to clean up the carb (no, I'm not planning on throwing it into the bead blaster! ) but as pretty as the rest of the right side of the motor is going to be, I gotta do something...

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
On the second day of the Death Valley tour the overflow tube solder failed in the header tank after driving along a disused rail bed. We found a garage to do a quick Solder repair but I thought it needed a little more support. So yesterday I pulled the radiator and soldered the tube and the support in five places. That should hold.
While under the car I checked the oil dip stick compared to the petcock. There was about half an inch difference. The dip stick indicates empty and the oil flows freely from the hole. So I shortened the outer tube by 3/8”. Now they almost correspond, the dip stick indicates empty when the oil is just about the top of the petcock threaded hole.

Have ordered diverse items for my newly acquired 1914 touring in order to pass inspection. In Denmark we must have flashers and stoplight, so I am preparing to extend the wiring for that.
In the meantime, I managed to get the sidelamps fixed with new wigs and fresh kerosene and here is the test: Then i switched of the ligths in the room: The requirement is that they can be seen from 300 meters distance. I think they fulfils that

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Drove 450 miles round trip yesterday with a trailer behind to pick up two Ruckstells and a frame with a dropped front axle. Bought the Ruckstells a while back and was just waiting for a warm day to go after them. There was also a pickup box with a pre-starter engine there but we couldn't round up the owner on the phone so we had to leave it. Might go back later for it.
I'll take some pictures of that front axle and post them later, right now it's off to the shop to get some carbs in the mail.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
I was able to figure out how to get Clarabelle on the new lift so decided it was a good time to pull the front wheels so I could clean and repack the bearings. I had pumped new grease in when I first bought the truck. Thanks to info on this forum, I was able to get the inside bearings knocked out. Once I cleaned them up, I was glad I did. The outside bearings and races were perfect, the inside not so much. I suspect the previous owner had not taken time to remove and repack the inside bearings with any regularity as they both looked pretty rough. They had newer dust seals but obviously there had been moisture sitting for some time.

Love the shop and the truck. I am slowly becoming a fan of T trucks...yours is a beauty.
Re: Bearings - time well spent. Races, bearings and seals are not that terrribly costly and well worth the time to R&R. Good catch.

A most pleasurable task was accomplished today. I woke my Model T up from its’ winter nap and prepared it for the coming driving season. My son stepped right up and offered to take it for a shakedown cruise. I planned on being the copilot until the queen of their household pulled rank on me. Needless to say Grandpa was a pushover! Veronica is looking forward to learning to drive a Model T when she is tall enough.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
I have been making progress on the 15 runabout reassembly this week. Removing the rear leaf spring was a pain last year, and reinstalling it was a pain too! Glad that part of the job is done. I got the front axle reassembled and installed with the help of my youngest son who just got back from college for spring break. One of my other sons helped me install the rear axle later in the afternoon.
My wife was glad to finally get the frame off the pool table in the basement, but her car got kicked out of the garage until I get it back together. Now the garage has the 15 body and chassis in two bays, and the 21 touring in the last bay.

Took time out from other stuff to work on valves a little more.
How do you reach those two way in the back?
Put a spring between the shaft and the cup and wrap Gorilla tape around it to keep it on.
Put some Gorilla tape in the cup to grab the valve.

I continued preparations for reassembly of my rear end and torque tube. I can't put ugly hardware back on my car. I spent yesterday gathering the best from my pile and cleaning and painting them. They'll get another final coat of paint after assembly.

Replace with new tires because existing tires are too worn out. And 2 days ago I washed and cleaned the car

...did any of the valves or seats show signs of not sealing properly prior to grinding?
Yes, they did. None of the valves needed grinding, but several valves and seats were ready for a touch-up. I also invested $45 in making sure the head is flat.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Hope to maybe start driving the damn things before too long!
Guess I'm lucky, not to brag or nuthin', but my cars are in tip-top shape
and just need some brass polished, check things out, and good to go.
I always take the wheels off and inspect, grease, etc.
And yeh, put the insurance back on!! That always helps!

Had to drop some things off at the job site.
This was laying out the house last fall.
This was today. The T is still on the job.-

Still working on fenders for the 8in1 bed. 1st test fit tonight.
I need to get this done so I can get Tim Morshers 1867 tools back to him. Also Jim Sims loaned me the dies for the large bead on the top. Tim also loaned me an original Marti Parry fender for a pattern. Some great people in this hobby!-

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
I didn't have a suitable tool for installing valve springs, so I set about making one.
It needs a little tweaking, but most of the time the springs don't pop out of it and go flying across the shop.
I finished it today and installed four springs before I ran out of time and had to go to town for groceries.

After the magneto loop I tried to repair the missing thread on the distribution cover.
Hope this is going well.
Will see in a few days when I start the reassembly of the engine and J&B weld will be hard out.

Removed and disassembled carburetor after a no-start and found no fuel at the bowl drain. The float valve is stuck, big-time. I'm trying to free it up. If I don't succeed by tomorrow, I'll order a new valve from Lang's.

Knocked the rivets out of 26/27 rear end center section. Tomorrow will press tube out in preparation to install a Ruckstell housing. Before installing need to check for length and straightness Snow and cold yesterday, today sun and wind! Moving some stuff back into storage that was pulled out for Portland Swap Meet. Our first tour is the 28 so need to do some maintenance on the 21, she has been only run 2 times this winter but no driving.

Went up to the farm today with Carston and woke up Nuthin’ Special from a long winter nap. Carston helped get the steering column fixed as the bolts had come loose in the fire wall and the accessory brass mount broke it bolt allowing the steering column to move about while steering
Carston wanted to activate his by himself today so I coached him thru the process.

WELL! Long time no see Chris! Seems like the forum has been just sort of "drag'n along", fun as always, but just sort of "ho hum", and along comes the Beckers! Don't know about the other folks here on the forum, but you just "made my day" for me! So tell us, how'd the ol' girl run? I hope Carston hasn't lost any of his enthusiasm Chris. I think the way you've encouraged him and kept him interested, and also managed to involve the whole family is just great! Now that Spring is just around the corner, you guys get the Noth'n Special out and blow out the cobwebs on a little more regular basis, and let us here from you guys, okay? And say hello to Clayton and tell him we'd like to hear from him once in awhile too! (.....and not just on Leno's Garage!) And by the way,....great set of pictures too Chris,......harold

Harold time to start posting again we plan to get the windshield fixed add a top and aluminum hoodwith hot rod louvers to it. Also some paint and some more upholstery work what we can can do on the cheap. I picked up a Warford for Nuthin Special and a Reeder head as well so we will be adding a few things to her. Need to figure out a way to build some accessory breaks or peice together a set of large drum Rockies for him as well.
Carston been pestering me for a couple of weeks to work the car again but weather and time just haven’t been our friends. plus The Motor in our 1919 touring gave up the ghost after 40+ years of hard driving. He want to help on her too. So more adventures planned need to start anew post. Well off to work at oh dark thirty in the morning again!

Found and fixed an oil leak (imagine that, an oil leak in a Model-T). My external oil line was loose up front and was oiling down the front crankshaft pulley enough to make the belt jump off a few times.

I practiced social distancing today. That means I lit a nice fire in the stove in the barn and worked on the reassembly of my rear end. The nearest human was several hundred yards away. My only visitor was the neighbor's dog. She's always welcome.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Frustrated with my engine troubles, I took on a different job I figured I could handle.
Last year my three gallon running board can suffered a parking lot crunch.
So I stuck in a rubber stopper with a hole drilled through it and blew up the can with compressed air.
The can popped out close enough to normal to suit me.

Pulled out the rear bearings, drilled and tapped a hole in the rear end for a drain plug. Greased the bearings up and got them reinstalled, only to find out I bought inner grease seals. Oh well, good practice for something I hope to never do again!

I was going to install a new radiator in my Model T. As soon as the hood and old radiator were removed I took one look at the motor and ugh, it needed a painting pretty badly. So, there it is. Now I have to coat the intake/exhaust manifolds with high heat paint and reassemble. Should be on the road Sunday (while I still can!).

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Started this morning by painting the engine for the 1915 touring.
Recharged the magnets on the flywheel and installed the magneto coil loop and the flywheel on the engine.
After the recharge I needed a prybar to separate the coil loop from the magnets.
After the reassemble the magneto test give 3.5Vac, turned the flywheel by hand.
Will go on tomorrow.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
I tried to start the '27 and not even the slightest sign of it wanting to run. The coils were buzzing happily, the battery new and fully charged. I have had fuel issues before, so I opened the sediment bulb drain and had plenty of fuel. I did the same with the carburetor drain and not a drop. I disconnected the fuel line at the carburetor and turned on the fuel. I got plenty. I pulled the carburetor - expecting to find a float bowl full of sludge. It was clean. I pulled the float bowl valve and it was stuck closed. This is the "new, improved" 2-ball valve that "eliminates sticking". I'm here to tell ya that it doesn't. The point of all this that I started thinking about why it would stick and I think I have it figured out. With the exception of the float bowl, in a gravity flow fuel system with an updraft carburetor the float bowl valve is the lowest point in the fuel delivery system. If the float remains closed for a while, any crud in the fuel system (water particularly) will end up sitting on the top ball. This would not be an issue with a downdraft carburetor. My suggestion, and the point of all of this is that if the T has to sit for a while, once a week I would drain enough fuel out of the float bowl so that the float will cause the valve to open. I will do this with the sediment bulb fuel valve turned on. This should get rid of any crud sitting on the top ball. Now I'm about to start installing the carburetor with the new 2-ball float valve. I'm also going to purchase a new needle and seat from Scott Conger as soon as he completes his next run of them. I'm hoping that he will contact me when he has them in stock again.

I installed the 1/2" copper line on my engine. The fitting was in the pan and hogs head when I got it but no line. The elbo in the hogs head would not clear when trying to thread it in. I used a coupling and short nipple to get it done. I also adjusted the reverse band one last time, hopefully. Not much but quallity time in the shop.

My weekend work has been cancelled as we limit contact with each other. Lots of motoring events I usually attend have been cancelled. This weekend I have used the time to make some progress on my 1916 pickup project. Very pleased with the new windshield frames and brackets from Langs. Our Australian supplier of frames has stopped producing so had to buy from the USA. Have been busy fixing brackets and hinges. Windshield supports rods are next. Lots of sanding and painting, then should be good to go. If this isolation keeps up, it will be finished in no time.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
At the end of last week, I finished the reassembly of the engine for the 1915 touring. Yesterday morning, Sunday, I set the engine in the frame and in the afternoon I tried to make it running.
A few weeks ago I bought a few boxes with model T parts, in one of the boxes was a coil box with four great looking coils. At that time I thought they were Fun project coils and reserve them for the 1915 touring.
Yesterday it was the time to try them out.
The engine started right up on battery but was running as crap. Three cilinders than two than three again never had all four and no way to make it run right on the magneto.
Every time I start a fresh rebuild engine I set a test light over the magneto also this time and the light was very bride so I was sure the magneto was working.
I started to look for the problems and tried and tested about everything till I changed the coil box with the coils. Now the engine run as new.
Later in the evening I set the coils on my HCCT, two give sparks, one give sparks once in a while and the fourth I never get to spark. Now I am wondering if I have Fun project coils or do I have some late after marked coils made in China with a virus ?
In the attachment some photos of the coils.

Finnaly finished painting the upper sections! That was more physically demanding than building it. Now to put the top covering on. Woo hoo!
Just give me time to Rust and I'll be good as new. Wabi-Sabi

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Been making headway on the Express we are building up for a camping trip.
Cut down the axle housing noses for eventual installation of full floating safety hubs.
Fully rebuilt the differential and Ruckstell. Lots of shimming and a handful of new parts. Changed out the pinion for a NOS 10-tooth.
Cut up the extra 1927 frame bought last year at Chickasaw and carefully trimmed the frame of the car. The two will be combined 12" longer than stock.
Buttoned up the rear axle. Replaced the brake cams and bushings and rebuilt the parking brake. Added the radius rods, disc brakes, safety hubs, and rebuilt torque tube with modern bearing. And bolted the two frame halves together. The frame joint will also be welded.
Bolted up the restored cast iron Warford and brace. The 12" stretch of the frame allowed the install with a stock length torque tube.
Rebuilt the rear axle, carefully tapering the springs, painting with graphite paint, added new clips, bushings, center bolt, shackles and pad. Painted the spring. Finally got the rebuilt axle and restored rear spring bolted into the frame.
Have been working on a design for an Express body for the stretched frame that will accommodate two 6'2" campers.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
I needed to pick up a couple of prescriptions at Shop-Rite pharmacy today. It was a severely beautiful day, so I drove the T. The roads, and Shop-Rite, had about 20% of normal traffic. It was spooky! But, driving in, Every. Single. Driver. honked, waved, or gave a thumbs-up. They must have been overjoyed to see something nice. And I even scored a 6-pack of toilet paper rolls in Shop-Rite! All in all, a good day.

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Decided to rebuild the rearend on my 4-door. It made the Florida tour great. We took it apart 2 days ago and found it in bad shape. Needed both axles, drive shaft, 2 axle sleeves, putting a 10 pinion in to help it pull hills better. It had one brass thrust washer and one babbited . Just waiting on parts now so we can put it back together.Have a good day. Clyde

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Normally we should have our last technical reunion of the winter season this afternoon at the model A club of the Netherlands in Bergambacht near to Rotterdam. Corana makes it not possible.
Thanks to Toon, Piet, Peter and all the others for the fine and learn full afternoons this winter. I watch out for next winter season starting the last Saturday of October.
Hope to meet you all on one of the rides during the Summer.

March project is a box of coils, a few new capacitors/points, some tools and testers, add some time equals fun and satisfaction.,

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
During our social distancing, my wife and I have been doing some of that dreaded, yet much needed clearing out of “stuff.” On bookshelves in Yvonne’s sewing room were a couple of decades of Vintage Ford magazines that she wanted to relocated. Squirreled away in the garage and in my office were several more boxes of Ford Times, Horseless Carriage Gazettes, and issues of Enjine! Enjine! the official publication of SPAAMFAA (The Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus of America) that had overfilled the bookshelves in the office. So I cleaned out a cluttered corner of the shop, scrounged some salvaged materials and created a set of Corona shelves to hold my vast collection of periodicals. Entirely constructed with materials on hand, I avoided Home Depot! I also designed it to hold milk crates of car parts or a few more decades of magazines!

Re: WHat Have You Done To Your Model T In March?
Our 15 runabout restoration is starting to look like a car again! i finished installing the firewall and steering system this weekend. The company that I work for furloughed us for the next four weeks, so I hope to make a lot of progress getting it back together in the coming weeks.
I started the project just over a year ago. While I enjoyed tearing things apart and restoring or getting restored all the bits and pieces, I have to admit I find it it more enjoyable bolting it all back together.

I finally reinstalled my rear assembly after a total rebuild and repaint. It was out for three months and I had to wait for warmer weather to paint. Otherwise, it would have been back in sooner.

The skirts of the vinyl and the Red liner were tacked and snapped and the 4 corners were completed with the top on the car.
Many thanks to all who provided much needed technical support for this...special thanks to Rod Barret and Mark Cameron. This could not have gone better.
Regards,
Scott

Beautiful work Scott!
I really like the authentic upholstery, too!
James, I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who used his table saw as a workbench!
