OT--But really need Ebay help!!!!

Post by Marty Bufalini » Thu Feb 07, 2019 11:21 pm

I listed an item as an auction but didn't know it showed up as a Buy it Now. I listed a low price as usual to encourage bidding. Someone bought it as a Buy It Now at a ridulously low price within minutes of the listing.

Does ebay change listings to buy it now?

I cannot let the item go for what it went for. The buyer already sent payment.

Do I have a recourse?

HELP!!!

Follow up add: I did NOT list it as a "buy it now". I checked the original listing. Something went wrong. The item is an Aermore horn that I started the bid at $20 on a ten day auction.

cancel the sale and refund the payment. then relist the item. i have had items that i had the high bid on and then it just disappears. most likely because someone made an offer under the table, so to speak. eBay does not change a listing on the seller. they will cancel a sale if the item is something they feel is dangerous or offensive, it happened to me several times. good luck.

Dang Marty, I thought it was good deal but it did need some cracks fixed and the missing part replaced! LOL When you see a deal it pays to be fast and sometimes its for real. At least now I know why and all is good.

Be upfront with the buyer. Message him with the explanation. Refund at the same time. Always review your eBay posting several times before final submission. If you have used Buy it Now before their blasted software tries to write your next ad for you. Check it once, PREVIEW it twice....then your eBay experience will be nice. :D Best of Luck!

Whether you realize it on not - you probably listed it as “ Buy It Now “.

If you want to keep selling on eBay - take a hit and consider it a lesson learned.

Here's what I do to prevent this. You can schedule when an auction begins. It does not have to commence immediately after you click "List Item". That way, you have an hour, or a day, or whatever you choose, to look it over and make edits before you go live.

Marty, I'll share a recent story where E-bay was absolutely no help to me...you can go from there.

My long gone Fathers Lionels were missing the loco and tender. I don't know why but 50 years after he passed I decided to put the set back together as a static display...

I spent months learning the year by year differences between all of the Lionel 224/2224 loco-tender year by year changes...I wanted a 1936 'issue' and not something made between 1936 and 1947. (Sort of sounds like a T quest, eh?)

So all 'learned' I watch for months. Then, there it is one day...pictures show each and every detailed 1936 issue feature. I pay his 'buy it now' price in about 2 seconds...

A week later he contacts me that he "accidentally" packed it and sold it to someone else. He'd refund my money, or send me another loco-set. He sent pix and the set was a nice set, great condition, but 1946 set by the details. I said no thanks...

2 days later, the same the 1936 set show up in different positions, but to me definitely the same original set...the buy it now price is now 50% higher. I get miffed, go to E-bay over it...they say 'too bad, so sad' he offered to return your money for an honest mistake on his part!

I can't suggest whether you contact the buyer or E-bay first, but the 'out' worked for this guy and he was a crook...you're an honest guy who really made an honest mistake.....

I recently bought a set of ARP main studs on eBay. I knew they were on back order from ARP. This outfit said ships within 24 hours. Well, we got the tracking number very quick, but no sign of it getting to the post office. Three days later, with no explanation, the order was canceled and my money was refunded. If it is OK for them, it should be OK for you to be able to do also.

I'd st be honest with the buyer. I've bought parts only to have to seller contact me and say he didn't have the item or he misplaced it. Those were honest and I was disappointed but understood. Things happen and most T guys are understanding.
Just give me time to Rust and I'll be good as new. :) Wabi-Sabi

Bob McDaniel,I gotta tell ya, thank goodness it was someone on the forum who "bought" it and an even bigger thank you for your understanding. I was sweating bullets over this one!

I always schedule my items and do so as auction. I also always preview the listing making sure it is the way I want it listed and looks good. Not until then do I hit "list it" for a later date.

Thank you all for your information.

I love this forum!!!

Marty,

I will admit it made me think OK what's up and why when I saw the refund in my e-mail and then I was looking for some reason but didn't see anything till I was on here and saw your post for help. Knowing now what happened I understand 100% and would like to help in case it happens again and your "buyer" is not as understanding. I don't know if ebay has a way to add a note on your end but if you could contact the "buyer" and tell them it was a mistake you might keep them from giving you a hard time on ebay or they could just be a jerk and cause problems anyway. You can't make everyone happy but it does help to know the reason. The truth is the best answer in a case like this. I am easy to get along with and have no hard feelings at all and would not think twice about buying from you in the future.

With that said, Got any open valve engines for sale with buy it now? LOL

Jim, I second the motion: "Hurray for Bob"!!!

Bob, I looked for a way to send a note of explanation and didn't see one.

But, again, thanks for your understanding and confidence.

The horn will be relisted. But, I'm blocking you!!! KIDDING!!!
