Unabashed plug for a hand cleaner
A few months ago I was in Colorado and bought some powdered hand cleaner in a little local mercantile store in La Veta. Turns out the stuff is the best cleaner I’ve ever used, puts a serious scrub on the kind of 100 year old grime we frequently get from our hobby! I apologize if this type of post is verboten here, and I have no stake in the company whatsoever. The product is called Pinerite, it’s an all natural product consisting of pine tree powder, borax, lanolin and some sodium salts. No fragrance but man it scrubs them hands clean with only about a teaspoon or two and a little water. I reordered Monday online direct from the company, and yesterday the owner of the company called me to thank me for my order! Much like most of the companies we buy our parts from, here’s another little single owner supplier who provides a great product we need that works great who actually reaches out to customers to thank them! The website is just the name with a .com......

Re: Unabashed plug for a hand cleaner
I expect the cleaning agent in Pinerite is the element borax. Borax has been getting hands clean for well over a hundred years. I have this in my kitchen and in the bathroom. Rosemary DeCamp would be pleased. I was unable to find it in any local stores, so I bought a case of the stuff online. It will probably outlast me.

Probably so! The scrubbing agent of the pine dust really cuts thru the grime! It’s natural lava!

Good stuff. I sold it here in my store for a while but it never caught on. Maybe because most of my customers are woodworkers but I really liked it when I did tool repair or in the garage at home. It is basically borax and ground up pine cones as far as I can tell.

Very relevant post
I will do a bit of research, but it seems Borax is the key ingredient. My guess is the ground pine cones give the (soft) abrasive action and the lanolin gives some 'smoothness' (just like the cream for a baby's bottom)..
Thanks for the notice.

Been in grease and grime growing up working on tractors and this and that on the farm. Use to use tide or gas to get off the really bad gunk, grime and Lava hand soap and then my mechanic uncle let me use some of his Go-Jo and I thought that was the best that ever was. Been using it and copy cat brands ever since!

Re: Unabashed plug for a hand cleaner
A trick i learned when i was an engineer in the merchant navy in my younger years:
Especially when working on Diesel engines you get this black coal in the little cracks in your skin that just will not come out no matter how much you scrub,
well here's the solution; take some of the cheapest diet margarine, rub a layer on your hands and massage for 5 minutes, then wash off with regular soap, and presto, coal is gone!
The explanation seems to be that there is a lot of emulsifier in the cheap stuff because it is mostly water with a tiny bit of grease/fat, to mix the fat with the water you need a really strong emulsifier to get the fat and the water to "like" each other and not separate while the product is on the shelf in the store, that emulsifier is what does the trick, it binds the greasy black stuff from your hands to the water in the margarine and so 'pulls' it from the cracks in your skin and binds it to the margarine, and then it can be washed off
It blew me away when i first tried it but i still revert to it when i have to get my hands really really clean

When in trouble, do not fear, blame the second engineer !

Re: Unabashed plug for a hand cleaner
Had some friends who worked at General Tire and Rubber Co. building tires. They told me they would use everything from gas, to Boraxo, to everything in between and couldn’t get the black completely off their hands. It seemed to get in your pores and stay there.
