WTB Steel fellow for 30 x 3-1/2 clincher rim

Post by mcnallyf » Wed Mar 12, 2025 10:00 pm

I am looking for a steel fellow for a clincher rim 30 x 3-1/2. If you have a rim I would purchase that also for a spare tire.

Demountable or non-demountable? Believe it or not, Ford did use some steel felloe non-demountable rims for a few years.

If common demountable rim steel felloe? There were at least four common variations, made by different companies and in different years. Demountable rims and the different felloes do not interchange very well. So it would be to your advantage to be clear about wich maker and style you want.

To take fixed lug rims, or Kelsey loose lug rims? Believe it or not, Ford used a variety of different felloes over the years.

France’s can you take a picture of the style rim you have? It will help. Preferably tire & rim off including a picture of the wheel too once the rim is off. Best John

Those appear to be Hayes - most don't mix & match - you want a matched pair !

You need to look in the Service Bulletins or on the forum for cross cut view of the different rims.
Can’t tell much from far away pictures.
Very important to match rims to felloes.

Sometimes there is a name on the lug.

The wheel photo I posted is a 21" Hayes w/straight edges - most 23" felloes are rolled.

The bright red felloe in the first photo and the two rims to the right look like they are Hayes items. Note the foot on the fixed lug, and the relief in the felloe edge which will allow those rims to be fitted. Hayes rims will only fit Hayes felloes. A later photo shows a rim with no foot on the lug. It should bolt right up to the Hayes felloe.

It is worth noting that the inside rolled edge of felloes which take rims with fixed lugs are wider than those on loose lug felloes. This wider land is the surface on which the rim jams when the lug bolts are tightened. The rim should be tight on this rolled edge before the lug can contact the outer face of the felloe. If the lug does contact the felloe, you have a worn/damaged felloe or rim which is not engaging on the inner land.

All the rims measure 23-1/16" on the outside lip.
when I measure the inside diameter 2 of them are 20-3/4" 2 of them are 20-13/16"

Frances this is exactly why I asked for pictures. On a tour I noticed one of the T’s appear to have tires shifting a bit. At first I thought it was a rim that was warped so I went up to the owner & told him. I started looking at the rear wheel noticed I could see a significant gap & told him his rim was a Hayes but his wheel wasn’t & he thought I was criticizing his T but showed him on mine how they should fit. He was convinced & When I got home I sent him the correct wheel. I wish I had another, I’d send to you but I don’t however I’m going to a fellow T friend in a few weeks & see if he has an extra Hayes in his stash if you don’t find one before then. Best John

Your third photo shows a tyre fitted to a rim which has no feet on the lugs like the first one shows. The bright red rim in the same photo shows a rolled in outer edge, unlike the straight up outer edge in the first photo.
The rim in the third photo will bolt up to Kelsey, Ford and Hayes wheels with no problems. A Hayes rim will only bolt up to a Hayes felloe. So, when you decide on a spare rim, it should not be one with lugs having no feet. That one will bolt up to a Hayes felloe.

Damn! I just re-read my last post. I need to make a correction. "So, when you decide on a spare rim, It SHOULD be with lugs having no feet. That one will bolt up to a Hayes felloe."

Apologies. Allan from down under.

Francis, you latest photos are peplexing to me. Prevously other posts on wheels/ rims have shown Hayes felloes as having a straight up outer edge like that shown in Karl's offering, these having a cut-out which will accept the Hayes lug foot. Your wanted ad shows a felloe with a rolled in outer edge, and a cut-out in that, something I have never seen before.

If you look at Austin Farmer's excellent post on 16 march entitled "Refinishing a set of wheels" and scroll down till you find his wheel with the two unfinished spokes, you will see a felloe with a rolled in outer edge, and instead of a cut-out, it has a depression to accommodate the foot on a Hayes rim. This is how all my Hayes wire wheels are.

It raises a couple of questions. Are the felloes with the straight up outer edge really Hayes felloes, or are they some other manufacturer's felloes made to take a Hayes rim in the interests of interchange ablity? Are the felloes you show with both the rolled in outer edge and a cut-out someone's solution to fitting a Hayes rim? I have made such a modification before, not with a cut-out, but by making the depression. In looking for felloes with a rolled in outer edge and a cut out, you may be trying to find that which was never manufactured, but was modified by a previous owner.

If your red felloe works, you might just as well do the same cut-out yourself in a felloe offered. Whatever solution you find, a fixed lug rim needs to wedge tightly on the wider inner land on the felloe with the lug standing off the outer face of the felloe. It is this wedging which provided the drive. All the four wheel bolts do is maintain the wedge.

Hope this helps rather than confuses.
