I like that straw hat (boater)!
There is one type that was in the early days, quite common. It was also the style that continued decades later, and are even made in limited numbers to this day. The common type is a hard pressed, slightly shellaced or glued with some sort of binding agent straw. They were made in both narrow (like this hat) or the more common back in the days wide brim styles. Most newer or reproduction straw hats are the narrow brim style.
This hat is not one of those! It is a softer straw, loose weave, with little if any binding agent used. The brim as well as the rest of the hat is much thicker in construction. They were made and sold in many variations of weaves. Being softer, their survival rates were not good. Today, they are somewhat rare. But I like them! (I also have two nice originals.)
