Agree with Speedy and Wing on the springs. I used them 40 or so years ago and will say I did not have leaking from the axle ends. Was this because of the springs? This was before the modern seals. I also agree that using the modern neoprene inner grease seals takes care of the problem.

Here is my Rim Wind Seth Thomas - quite similar to others. In the second picture you can see the knurling Allan speaks of. Mine takes about 4 half-turns to wind. To set the time, you pull that same bezel outward and turn to set. Then, slide it back in and be sure it engages to run.

Re: MTFCA Hershey Gathering

Sorry I missed this. I wasn't there for Tuesday but was there for Wednesday through the end of the show and very much would have liked to attend the gathering and meet some Forum folks. Didn't check my phone. I check my computer all the time when "land-bound" but not so much my phone when out in the...

Re: Another Hershey Video - Quick & Dirty

Thank you, sirs. Hershey is not an easy shoot. With the large crowds around the autos it's hard enough to just take a picture. Most people are accommodating when/if they see someone shooting a still. Moving around a car to shoot video is even more challenging, as, at the same time, I don't want to b...

Re: Hershey weather

Final day, mostly at the car show: About 7 hours, 5-1/2 miles. Didn't quite catch all of the swap meet. Total walking distance right around 23 miles.

No, not mine. It's a bit of a bitsa. Seems to be driven a lot.

Today's walking tally: 8 hours and 9-1/2 miles. Did see a good deal on this 1912 Cadillac that needs a little TLC to freshen it up

Wednesday, day 2. Weather not bad. Just a little spitting. Us Southern California guys don't go much for that rain. Walked for 11 hours and covered exactly 8 miles. More tomorrow!

And, John is correct. The Stevens puller is awesome. Obviously we all can't come up with one. The grinding and splitting method works well. But, always keep your eye out. You'll end up with new friends! :o

Re: Thinking about going to Hershey this year.

David's 55 mile estimate sounds about right if you go up and down each side of an aisle. In years past I heard 23 or 24 miles as an estimate but I figure that to be one direction on each aisle. I'm a zig-zagger so that's how I do it. I saw somewhere last year that the distance was about the same. As...

Re: Happiest hogshead

I concur with John and Allan. Mike Bender had an informative post on doing the job with lip seals but I can't seem to turn it up. Attached are a couple of his pictures. I use a mill as well but don't have an angle head. I stand the cover on its side bolted to a large angle plate. Be sure to retain a...

Steve! Hmmm... Seems we snuck ours out of the HS science lab. If we'd known then that we could also use it to match/weigh T parts :o !

Re: Best Turn Signal available

When using hand signals, I do it in an animated fashion. Turning left I point with my finger (index, of course) and repeatedly move my hand up and down, bending at the elbow. Same basic procedure for stop/slow down but with arm in lowered position and palm facing rearward. For turning right I make a...

I, too, have used Kevin's broaching method. As he states, you've already got the bearing chucked up in the lathe. It also makes for a more professional looking job. Originally, I used Mark's hacksaw method.

That's Fred Hoch in/on his Mercer Raceabout. It is said, "What Fred doesn't know about Mercers isn't worth knowing". After the car show we had the thrill of seeing him blaze down Hersheypark Drive.

And that '05 Packard was a jewel as well. Didn't it say on his write-up that it was something like the first auto to be judged a National 1st by the AACA way back when?

Hershey 2021 Video... FINALY!

After finally driving back to the west coast and to my editing station, this year's video. Nothing fancy here. Twenty-five minutes of clips cobbled together for those of you who couldn't make the journey. Sorry if it's long. I did edit out about 41% of the clips I shot. It's always hard to make thos...
