Re: Puffing Exhaust - Next Step - Now Diagnosis Help Needed

Thanks everyone! I’m getting them rebuilt (and getting an extra too). I’ll likely be back to the forum once I see how things are running (or not) with rebuilt coils. I’m curious to see what changes with suspected open valves with good functioning coils.

Re: Puffing Exhaust - Next Step - Now Diagnosis Help Needed

Seems I have a defective coil (see string of messages). Do I buy new, rebuild one or all that I have, or another option? Or, try and fix myself?

Thanks, Steve

Re: Puffing Exhaust - Next Step - Now Diagnosis Help Needed

OK.... traveling down the path of checking coils as a first step. I was able to get them all out. I cranked until I had a solid buzz on one of the other coils in position where there wasn't a spark. Then I put each in the position in the coil box that corresponded to the lack of spark in the origina...

Re: Puffing Exhaust - Next Step - Now Diagnosis Help Needed

Stupid question, how do I get the coils out to swap them? Do they just lift out?

Re: Puffing Exhaust - Next Step - Now Diagnosis Help Needed

Altair, I appreciate your patience with me.... I turned the key on, and cranked slowly. It buzzes at 10:00, 4:00, 10:00, and not again at 4:00. Repeated that several times. How do I know if it is the coil vs. wiring? I took the cover off the coil box. Is there a secret to getting a coil out, or is i...

Puffing Exhaust - Next Step - Now Diagnosis Help Needed

Hi, Thanks to the previous replies to a separate post about my loud puffing exhaust, I've tried to short out the spark plugs one by one (still waiting to get the compression tester). I've taken a short video showing what happens and hope someone can help me diagnose what the problem is at this point...

Re: Puff, Loud Puff, Very Loud Puffing Exhaust

Thanks for the advice. I’ll short it out and I’ve ordered a compression/leak tester. May be back to the forum once I have results to report.

Re: Puff, Loud Puff, Very Loud Puffing Exhaust

I don't own a compression gauge set. Any suggestions on a decent one that reasonably priced?

Re: Puff, Loud Puff, Very Loud Puffing Exhaust

Maybe there is a sticking valve, but the engine doesn't seem to running very rough to me - sorry, that points to another question. How do I go about diagnosing if there is a sticking valve? Regarding the muffler, how might I go about looking for a mouse nest and get it out? The muffler doesn't come ...

Puff, Loud Puff, Very Loud Puffing Exhaust

So, I'm tardy getting my 1922 Touring started after the winter. Got it started today, but the exhaust is puffing very loudly - almost too loud for me to hear how well (or not) the engine is running. I'm a novice here.... Is this common after sitting idle for some months? How might I diagnose the pro...

Re: 6 Volt Battery Cap

No, not an original battery. Bought it at Tractor Supply. I called them and said they didn’t have any to offer for sale. I asked about one from a returned battery, again a “no”.

6 Volt Battery Cap

I was checking the water in my 6 volt battery. I placed one of the screw-off caps somewhere and for the life of me can’t find it after searching, searching, and more searching. So, now I’m tired of looking and just want to buy a new cap. My local auto store looked strangely at me and even questioned...

Best oil, I’m almost afraid to ask...

Time to change the oil in my 23 touring car. I always thought non-detergent oil was a must (5W-30 for my climat), but just read an article that detergent oil is good for the car after all. What’s the consensus from the experts here?

Re: Diagnose by Sound?

Thanks so much! I’ll try as you suggest.

Btw, I think I should buy a compression tester anyway. Would any work (e.g., cheap one from Harbor Freight)? I’ve not used one before. I assume you attach it to the spark plug hole, crank the engine and what it reads, right?

Diagnose by Sound?

Novice here.... Can a problem be diagnosed by listening? I've just started by 1923 T for the first time this season (yes, I'm late). Quite a bit of sputtering from the exhaust and some roughness in the engine. I took a short video (https://1drv.ms/v/s!AoOCcCJSc1JliJYohPZDsOzPwVeeYQ?e=yJeqbb). Any su...
