how do you fix a gas leak?

Would someone please tell me how to stop the gas valve from leaking? My other T also leaks but I live with that one.
The leak is from the top. I tried taking it apart and putting soap on it and some other stuff they say airplanes us on gas valves (I think.)
Thank you in advance, Bob

Is it ok to have a space between the engine and the side rail? (pictures)

There is a gap between the frame and the engine support arms. Is this acceptable or might the weight of the engine pull down the frame? The best I can measure, the engine support frame hole is 21.5 on center. There is a block of wood inside the frame rail. And their is a bolt through the side rail, ...

Re: Is this too dangerous to keep as is?

Drag Link - thank you - I often confuse the two. Measure the pitman arm - good to know! I was afraid road bumps would bend the drag link. Guess not. I put an accessary wishbone on my 12 touring. I plan on putting one on this torpedo too. Thanks for the advice! Hmmm, hopefully the engine will setting...

Is this too dangerous to keep as is?

The tie rod is about 1/8 to 1/4 at the most from the wishbone. I would think that over time it would bend or break. The only solution I see is taking the steel steering shaft to my welder and having him extend the shaft about an inch. Do any of you know what to do or think it is too dangerous to let...

That makes sense. Although ironically that problem is in the T that is painted and restored and I can live with the shorter column.

Now on to the 12 torpedo conundrum. Thank you Walter!

Re: what is the length of a 1912 Torpedo roadster steering column vs a 1911 steering column?

Thank you Walter. This is perplexing because the 12 touring column tube is 23 1/2 and if it was 25 1/2 like the 12 torpedo, the steering wheel would be pressing against my lap. As it is now the steering wheel is so close I have to spread my legs to advance the timing. Maybe I will have to sell these...

Re: what is the length of a 1912 Torpedo roadster steering column vs a 1911 steering column?

thanks Dan, but now I am more perplexed. The steering shaft length that you shared is 54 1/4" long and not 56". The part I am referring to is in the picture. Of course now I wonder why my shaft is so short? (remember this is a family forum! No comments. lol) Deal with that next. The column is 25 1/2...

what is the length of a 1912 Torpedo roadster steering column vs a 1911 steering column?

bought a 1912 Torpedo roadster that was in parts. The gentlemen I bought it from collected 1912 parts over the years so it is not an original per se'. I bought brass plated 1911 - 1912 timing and gas rods from a vendor but the rods are too short. (So is the steering shaft because I think the column ...

Do you think putting the smaller diameter rivet in place and filling the area around it with JB weld would hold, or might the JB crack?

I'll also try McMasters.

I drilled the rivet out completely.

I didn't know they made larger diameter rivets. I only looked at what one of our vendors carries.

I'll check google and see about larger diameter rivets.

Thanks for your feedback.

I drilled out the rivets of a 1912 steering gear box and now the hole is too big for the new rivets. Is buying brazing rods is the answer to filling in the whole with brass and then re-drilling or simply put the small diameter rivet in and fill around it? Never did this before. Re: What do you use to take off old varnish / laquer....

Thanks for the advice. I mentioned the brass wheel because I sometime use it on badly tarnished metal including certain thick brass parts such as carburetor knobs, and that's only if my regular polish does not remove it. Yea, I learned my lesson, I've ruined brass before by using a wheel!

What do you use to take off old varnish. or lacquer or whatever coating they put on brass lamps after they polish them.

I accidentally tried polishing older brass with a wire wheel brush and took off the shinny coating. Now I have to do the whole thing.

I am guessing the strap goes over the tank and through the bracket holes on a 1912 Torpedo roadster. The strap does not fit over the tank. I believe by the worn threads that the straps are original. The tank might be a repo. The one picture shows the strap lifted high over the tank. The other pictur...
