Re: About to buy tires - are recent vintage Riversides holding up well?

I just ordered tubes from Lucas as well. I was leary of the $15 price. Seemed to be very thick rubber. I aired them all up prior to install to check for leaks and had none.

I'm gonna need new tires before winter so I'm reading this thread with great interest.

Re: Bird chirping when I give her the gas

I just got notification that my new exhaust manifold is shipping. So I will be replacing the entire exhaust, plus redoing the intake gaskets. I just recently replaced the head gasket, and all bolts after chasing all the bolt holes so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue. I have felt and pushed on ev...

Does it do it sitting still or just in motion? I had what sounded like a bearing squeeling or a fan belt slipping. Only in motion and about 20 to 30 mph. Drove me nuts. I finally found the radiator shell was rubbing on the hood shelf. Are the sparkplugs tight? Check for sheetmetal rubbing somewhere...

The gasket is shot on cyl 4. I am waiting for a new manifold to arrive then I will take care of that issue. I can see an exhaust leak making a noise like this but to me it would be strange for it to only make the noise under load.

Bird chirping when I give her the gas

I need some help diagnosing my engine noise. Or at least I think it's engine noise. When under load, if I throttle up, it sounds like a bird chirping coming from the engine area. If I back the throttle off, the chirp goes away. Throttle back up and it comes back. It is very consistant with what soun...

Re: Need confirmation of problem

Well, I drove it today. Definitely down on power. Feels really good in low gear but the transition to high is horrible. Theres just no torque to get it going. It'd make a great parade car the way it is but I think the owner wants to drive it more than that. Next step is to do a leak down test to see...

Re: Need confirmation of problem

Update: We decided to make sure it ran before spending money on the exhaust. So we bolted up the manifolds, gaskets on the intake, none on the exhaust. Then went on the carb and a final check that we werent missing anything. All good, so it was time to fire. Rod let me have the honors since I had al...

Re: Need confirmation of problem

I ended up replacing 3 valves. The stuck, bent one and then 2 of them that the valve faces were so pitted lapping wouldn't fix it. I lapped all other valves so the seats and faces look good. Then I started bolting it all together. Everything went super smooth until I got to the exhaust manifold. Tak...

Re: Need confirmation of problem

UPDATE We decided it was time to remove the head and have easy access to everything. Head came off easy, inspection of the head gasket showed possible water infiltration into combustion chamber. I'm not the best gasket reader, but it wouldn't take much to cause the rust I'm sure. I pulled the valve ...

Re: What have you done with your T in September?

Had the freeze plug pop again. Dumped all my water onto the carb which promptly killed my engine. Drag racers use water injection, so I thought it'd be faster. Nope, died on the side of the road. I pushed her to the local Kwik Trip, borrowed some tools. Pulled plugs, spun the engine to pump out wate...

Lighting issue

Latest issue I have is with lighting. Currently all original 6 volt setup, 2 headlights and one taillight. I replaced all bulbs about a year and a half ago. Recently one headlight on dim burned out. That was ok to me because I run on battery so it saved me some juice. Now both lights burned out, so ...

Re: What have you done with your T in September?

Took a 75 mile round trip in the rain today to the East Troy Railway Museum. Got to ride a 1929 electric trolley. Stopped at the ice cream shop next door for a treat and a photo op. Slight hill in front of the building so I parked in a way that my brakes would hold. Then I went inside to see this on...

Re: Oil sight gauge issue

I took the sight tube off, no vent hole to be found. So I drilled one in. Now it reads correctly. For how much I drive this car, I am happy to have this quick way to make sure I have enough oil. Back to driving!

Oil sight gauge issue

Hey guys, just installed an oil sight gauge. The oil level doesn't appear to change. It was at this level (above the upper petcock) before I added a quart of oil. And it was still at that level after I added a quart of oil. No oil came out of the upper petcock when first opened and just a little tri...

Re: Need confirmation of problem

So, we have been spraying Kroil and trying to wiggle the lifter. So far to no avail. I said we should keep spraying and trying a couple times a day for 2 days. If that doesnt work, could we apply heat to the lifter boss? What about using a vise grip to get a better grip on the lifter. I would make s...

Re: Need confirmation of problem

With the lockup condition you describe, I would pull the head. If you're trying to compress water, you can end up bending a rod. The head gasket may be leaking and is where so much rust came from. We have the plugs removed, there isn't any sign of water in the cylinders. The starter frees it up ins...

Re: Need confirmation of problem

Yes, got fuel and spark. I didn't check compression. I started looking at valves when fuel and spark checked out ok. Luckily we are using a starter. Unluckily, its because we cant hand crank. We get half a crank in and it locks up. Cant budge it at all. But bump the starter and she spins right over....

Re: Need confirmation of problem

Was able to wiggle the valve this morning so I figured the problem must be deeper. I decided to pull the cover to look for a mouse. I didn't find a mouse, but I found lots of rust. Why would the valve cavity be so dry after sitting for just a year?

Need confirmation of problem

Hey guys, trying to help a fellow T'er get his running after sitting for a year. Went thru the fuel, air, spark tests and found the problem to be a stuck open exhaust valve on cylinder 2. Everything else checked out ok. Would one open valve cause us to not be able to get her started? Picture of the ...

The good and the bad.

My old boss found this hat at the local Country Club. Club opened in 1924, he just had to buy it for me.

Then I close the door to go for a drive and the driver window cracks from bottom to top. Ugh!

Re: Its been a year!

Today I changed the oil and put the new manifold gaskets in. I went with the individual gaskets for the first time, those are way easier to install. Car fired right up and purred like a kitten. I then started off on the road to put some miles under it. I probably put on 50-75 miles chasing around to...
