I am rebuilding my rear axle of which I am installing new bearings and seals.

Status update, the bolt slid half way in, my driving got it that far but it hasn't moved past the half way point. I am wondering if I should loosen the u bolts a bit more and it might slide in because those u bolts are tight, if I loosen then it might slide the rest of the way into the cross member. How bad if an idea is that?

Don't make this mistake I made. After reading a few posts and taking out the roller bearing and the liner from my rear axle I saw what I thought was the remnant of an inner seal. What is interesting is the name of the designer and or construction company. Firestone Reality. See pictures. Dan

My engine was rebuilt at some point a long time ago. It has .020 over cast iron pistons. The pistons have no markings on them anywhere. My valve lifters have depressions in the tops that the valves sit in. They are all the same, and appear to be made this way. So, my questions are:
How do I measure valve clearance with these lifters?

Last post
If you know what valve clearance is required for your given cam/valves, in some brass shim of that thickness, you could punch out a disc or two to fit into the lifter recess. Then trim the valve stems to suit and the shims will leave you with the gap you want.

The steam holes, Those which you show and also the ones at the front and rear corners of the block and head should be completely sealed when the head is bolted down. If the bolts are too long, the head gasket will not seal the steam holes and allow water to seep out. The ones in the corners will allow water to leak and it is behind the manifold so...

On a Model T Generator , how much fore and aft slack is allowable in a 26-27 Model T generator? The gear seems to be tight on the shaft and the generator works normally, but I can move the shaft back and forth about 3/32 .

Minimal to none.
There are spring steel bearing tensioner spacers available to go under the rear bearing to take away that slop.
You can also drop in an extra generator felt seal in under the bearing that will take out the play.

Does anyone have any experience with the Safety hub and drum that Snyder sell ? Looks like you run lined shoes and an equalizer to get service brakes. Not cheap but I like the idea. I have Rocky Mountains on my pick up, pretty satisfied with them. I do not want the disks. It looks like it is possible to keep my Hassler shocks with these brakes...

I had one of those equalizers on my car for a short while. Rocky Mountain brakes are better, but I think there was a little bit of benefit to that setup.

I purchased a bunch of weatherstrip at one time some years ago and am just now getting to the doors. I found this package without any label or part number on it. So, I took photos for help in identifying it. The weatherstrip looks like there is enough to do the leading edge of both doors in between the hinges. But I really do not know where it is...

The item on the left is what I used for the windshield.
I remember now trying to install the item on the right into the door glass channel and it would not fit. The problem must have been the laminated glass and at the time, I decided to do without. Maybe I tried the wrong item.

This is not a criticism, but an observation: since you are asking those questions, this is your first rebuild, and as such, you are almost certainly not aware of other questions regarding wear/tolerances which are critical to a safe and reliable rebuild. If this is the case, then you need to order a rear axle rebuild book from any of the usual...

The key works and has BASCO on it. The fuse cover is missing, but they are labeled Horn, Rear, RHead, and LHead.

Beware of some of the bolts that were being sold in the blue and white Model T packs. Mine went to torque once, then stripped on the second attempt. Ended up using the original bolts again.

Too much wobble?

Someone at a recent event advised me to check my rear wheels for too much play.
Ignoring that the axle doesn't match the year, do I have too much wobble in my tires? There is no play in the wheel when off the ground and not running. The axle was replaced by a previous owner 15 years ago with new bearings and a brass thrust washer. Wood spokes are...

That would alter the levels on the dipstick a bit John, but nothing that could not be taken into account. Duncan and Fraser offered the Acuret dipstick in their suit of accessory options. My roadster was fitted with one, so I had no compunctions about re-fitting it. I solved the compromised angle at the bottom by fitting two right angled unions to...

Any chance someone has that? What I am measuring is not matching the drawings I got. Thanks Dan

Our departed white metal guru used to stipulate a certain measurement for the thickness of the rod caps where the bolts go through. This weeded out those caps which had been filed down too much, thus making the bearing material a little thin once bored to size. I tossed a lot of caps that didn't measure up. Those who fit their caps with a shim...

I need help trying to determine the correct spoke size for some wheels I am trying to rebuild.

Hello T people
I want to rebuild a 1926 engine and yesterday I was wondering how to recharge the flywheel magnets. Searching the internet for information, I found this article on rare earth magnet technology.
Could this work with Model T magnets or has anyone done this before?
I am new to this hobby and am new to magnetism.

There are countless ways to recharge Model T magnets, this is my method. I made my own home made set of coils and steel bars and used 3 12 volt batteries. The more coils the better. My first design did not work and this is my second second attempt. DSCN4418 .JPG

I have a Hartford tube that I haven't had a chance to use yet. So far, I've had no chance to use it. The one thing I don't understand is why it is made in China? Doesn't the U.S.A. still have the capabilities to make a good quality tube?

Car was starting just fine now it won’t. Now I have a new battery, starter, starter button , new cables & a new bendix. It will turn over enough to wind the bendix into the fly wheel and stop. You can crank this car and drive it anywhere but the starter will not work. What is the wrong ???? Thank you for your help. Ron

When I first restored my TT it had an issue with the starter initially winding out the bendix against the flywheel and just stopping. It was due to the shaft being bent

Some 25 four doors were equipped with all steel doors made by the Budd company. This was a transition year for the all steel 26 model year. Yes some 25s had wood framed doors, some had steel doors.
interesting, i always called 25 the transition from the old-style T to the new 26-27 improved t. and Budd made the body of my 31 A pickup

What is the manufacturers part number
for the large ball bearing, this is the one designed to accommodate a radial load ?
I suspect it will be cheaper source for a bearing supplier rather than the T parts vendors.
Last post
John makes a good point. There is a much cheaper bearing of the same dimensions, but it will not take the thrust generated by the gearset. It is that thust load which has to be accommodated by the bearing. This also means that the bearing used needs to be installed the right way round.

Subject: Has anyone added a vent to a Roof-8 OHV head to fix overheating?
Hi all — I’m running a 1927 Model T engine with a Roof-8 OHV conversion and an added water pump. After about 10 minutes of running, I get water and steam overspilling from the radiator. What’s odd is that the radiator itself isn’t overheating — the bottom tank stays at...

The issue with honeycomb radiators is that you cannot rod them out.
Take off the radiator and use a hose in the top to watch the flow out. If it backs up easily there is the issue.

Aux trans pops into neutral

My 26 TT has a Chicago trans and Ac brakes. If while slowing down I apply steady pressure on the brake pedal for 10-15 seconds the trans will pop into neutral. Scarey when approaching an intersection. The Ac brakes don't seem to help slow me down. Maybe they aren't adjusted properly. What is the problem?
Last post
Rod, on the brake adjustment, you should have the AC brakes adjusted to where they engage first & followed by the stock T brake in the transmission to engage. At least that’s the way I did it on advice from my mentor years ago. Best John

2 hole drums? The 2 is nowhere near the 6 key! Can't blame that on fat fingers. Then there are specials like Andre's, with a combination of 5 and 6 holes. :)

Last (hopefully) ignorant questions. I bought this car from a guy who picked it up from a family who had an older gentleman who had it and he passed away.
My 1927 Coupe has a positive ground, 6 volt battery (yes, I checked the ground). It will only charge to 35% and is very weak.
First question is what battery should I replace the battery...
Last post
Six volt systems work just fine when they are in good order. Actually, when the car is running, the T system will show 7 to 8 volts most of the time, and when running on magneto, the ignition system sees from around 7 volts at cranking speed to as much as 30 volts at road speeds. When the starter is engaged, system voltage will be around 4.5 to 5...

I recently acquired a large group of ancient (1910's to 1930's) negatives from the Kansas City Southern Railroad. These were once part of the railroad's files and are generally photos of railroad structures and the like. The Ford Model T manages to show up in some of the photos, so I thought I would share them here.

Just set an alarm on your phone for 3:15. No need to keep looking at your watch. I know I saw you driving some kind of car.
Seems like it just wasn't a good year this year, but I know we all had a great time at OCF with the perfect weather.
See you next year.
