That is so great. I have been hunting for a Roof Type A as it is the correct head for my car. The Lawwell Special. It raced a BB later in its life, but originally had an A. You can see it in this photo which is from a clipping in the Roof family archive.

Ruckstell axle question.

First post
I have a left rear wheel wobble on my 1926 Roadster. It has a Ruckstell AND Sure Stop disk brakes AND floating rear axles. Is the actual left rear axle a special one or is it a stock one? The only thing I've done is changed the wheel with another on and It's not a bent wheel. The wheels are powder coated large steel spokes. Thanks, bobt
Last post
Unless it has been hammered on at some time to dislodge a stubborn wheel, the axle has a centre drilling. You can visually check this by running the car while it is securely jacked up. If the centre runs truly your axle is not bent. The wheel/adaptor mix may well be the problem, especially if an original wooden spoke wheel provided the donor hub....

Mr. Original, 1/0 is correct for the Electric 1919 to 1927 Model T.
2/0 was correct for the very early Model As, but they soon went back to the 1/0 cables.
I have always wondered, if when they doubled the engine horsepower, they thought they had to double the battery cable size to have an efficient starter.

There is a lot of play in the shifting arm (part P98A), causing it to tilt/lift a little during shifting; this contributes to a lot of rattling whenever driving around down the road. If you want to be period correct, no zippers before 1917, they didn’t come into general usage until the mid-1920s, probably only on garments. (More research is indicated)
I recall my grandfather’s comments re/ zippers c. 1930 :

That's been my general procedure. The 1927 Ford owner's manual describes a different procedure that sounds easier, but I don't think it's do-able with the tires sold today. Apparently, the early balloon tires made for Ford drop center rims fit more loosely on the rim diameter, allowing for easy manual removal and installation, but requiring manual...

I picked up this from what looks like a complete Diamond tire repair kit. There is still talc in the tube. It’s missing the two Diamond Tire irons. On the small envelope it says:
-2 valve insides (I’m assuming these are the pieces that thread into the Schrader stems)
-2 valve caps (I don’t know what those look like)

I have a 26 touring that I acquired a couple of years ago.
Prior to me buying it had been restored, as in paint, body work and upholstery.
The seat height is too high, with the top up you have to duck your head to see through the windshield, annoying !
It appears that the seat springs have been replaced, no doubt a product from the T parts...

“ I think” the roofline is correct, thinking I will talk to an upholstery shop.
Yes the seat is quite comfortable, but craning your head to see, not so much.

At the right price..... for a parade/driver car, it would be a good deal. An expert would need to assess how much of what is there is correct and if the car could be brought back to original configuration on some practical basis. At the right price, and assuming it is mechanically sound, I'd buy it and enjoy driving it.

When you are driving along at speed and then put the Model T in neutral, so that it's coasting...the engine is turning but the rear wheels still going at speed, and this does not hurt the car?
Can't we flat tow the Model T in neutral with the engine running?

I figured it had leaked down into the crankcase. At least some of it didn't.

Question about the Mounting hardware for 26-27 headlights

Reno Speedster » Sun Dec 07, 2025 2:19 am
First post
I am working on light mounts for my 26 speedster. I don’t have the mounting hardware. The critical part as I understand it is a washer with a convex top that matches the concave shape on the lamp itself. Can anyone post a picture of the washer, tell me how big around it is, and tell me the diameter of the bolt that goes through it?

Perfect, thanks!

I need to find some valves for a Roof Liberty Overhead. The valve deminsion are the following
Head diameter-1.685”
Stem diameter- .308
Length- 5.839
My other question is what the valve grind? Is the grind similar to what you would grind on model t
Thanks
Fitz
Last post
If you can get ahold of an automotive engine valve catalog you could spend some time looking for something that matches. You could go with a larger diameter head and have it cut down along with longer stem.

I have a 22 Tourer, RHD, no starter model, no generator.
It's a standard T that I have restored with commutator, trembler coils and magneto and has always worked well.
Lately, it has begun to hate me by backfiring on starting, it tries to rip my arm off.
I'm over 80 and a bit slow to comprehend why it used to be good but it now isn't.

The original question was what has changed?
What made the car start kicking back? Nothing changed on the car. Enthusiastic, energetic cranking becomes harder with age.
That is what changes.
Setting the correct timing negates the problem. Changing the length of the timer connecting link will do that.

Would like to give a friend named Bill a big thank you for making a big effort to find a right hand drive hogs head with a starter access in Australia and having it shipped here to fit our 1913 Canadian t which did not have a starter mount.
Thanks bill

For those with a late 1924-25, in Oct 1924 a diffuser was cast into the hogshead to help direct oil back down into the bands. I wonder how many know this? It is in the service bulletins.
Since I have one on my car, I know.

Driving plate rivets dimensions?

What are size of the replacement driving plate rivets for a 26?
I have some on hand that “ I believe “ are the right size?
Truth be told I ordered some a couple of years back,
Used what I needed ,….. then lost the packaging !
Last post
I have seen these drive plates with 3 1 welds between the shaft flange & plate.
I like the added rigidity. Those few cracks become irrelevant.
Used drive plates are still plentiful enough @ swap meets for $10.

I’m trying to figure out what size carriage bolts Ford used on the 26-27 touring stanchions.
I think they’re 5/16” but not sure of the length?
Additionally was the one a slot headed screw?
Did all cars ship with the hook for the side curtains?
My cars been apart 10 years and I’m doing good to remember 10 minutes ago, even though I was methodical...

Don't remember the slotted screw, but could be.
As for the curtain hooks, Lang's sells new ones, and they have square holes.
The Parts Listing by Bruce Mc's CD encyl. lists 2 part numbers, T-7831 for 23-25 Curtain Hook on windshield bracket, and T-7832 Curtain hook on body, 15-27. But no pics of same.
On my original '23 touring the windshield...

Just performed a clean up of my '26 fan assembly. I used moly bearing grease. Correct or no? My rear cap did not have a felt washer underneath. Is that required? Seems like it should help with grease loss.

My late-style fan doesn't leak much oil, if any. I'm not sure why. (I don't fill it completely full of oil) Like most all old cars without positive crankcase ventilation, over miles of driving, the oil mist from the filler cap and throttle rod openings accumulates on underhood areas as a light film. If you drive on dirt roads, the film will...

Dave:
the reduced diameter on the driveplate and thicker babbitt in ball cap should not be a problem ... i have seen drive plates ground to 1.500 diameter and there is a variety of ballcap types with babbitt lining from probably .030 per side to around 1/4 per side ... i believe the 1.500 was to fit a ball bearing ball cap ...gene french

The in-line fuel filter can be ditched with a new stainless steel tank. They are notorious for restricting flow on gravity feed systems like the T. Yours even appears to be fitted backwards to my eye. Usually the fuel is fed into the canister and then through the paper filter, before heading to the carby.

How is the flange that holds the posts where the planetary gears mount attached to the shaft? I ask because we’re trying to shorten the shaft by a few inches and if that flange is a keyed press fit &/or pinned it would seem the easiest route instead of machining the bottom of the shaft. That would involve a lot more work to do. We’ve thought about...

Assuming no drawing available - or easier than using a drawing even if you had one:
before cutting, the original shaft can be set up and trued in the lathe. At this point the compound or taper attachment can be set up to trace the original taper to 0 deviation. This will be pretty much dead nuts for a setup.
everything below is just bonus...
