Composition of steering wheel spokes
Replies: 11
by
geneabb » Fri Jan 28, 2022 8:24 pm
First post
I have a Model T steering wheel with the solid iron spokes, not the stamped steel spokes. Are the solid iron spokes cast iron or cast steel? I'm thinking of bending them straight to make a racing style steering wheel for my speedster project. I understand cast iron can't be heated and bent successfully but cast steel can.
Thanks, Gene

Early Brush Painting?

Some early manufacturers applied paint to their bodies using brushes. I know that Japanning sped up the Model T process later on. But I was wondering if anyone is aware of earlier Model T bodies having factory-applied brush painted bodies.

Just to divert a little, hand brush painting was done in assembly line production for English cars well into the 30's. I can still remember running my hands over the brush strokes and being fascinated that the paint was smooth on my great uncles 1936 'Standard' even with the obvious brush marks (probably due to a lot of hand flatting done). That...

Really depends on what strength the rod bolt is - grade 5 would be approx. #25 - grade 8 would be as Mark suggested.

There is more to a valve job than just stem clearance and good valve face contact. Valve seat width can make a big difference in how well a valve seals, and in turn how well an engine runs. I have purchased the bottom metal channel for the door glass for my 1927 coupe and the channel rubber seal. Can someone walk me thru how to attach the channel to the glass? The glass will be tempered. I assume I should not apply any pressure to the channel to clamp it to the glass, just rely on the adhesive.
I will use laminated glass for the...

Glass setting tape comes in different thicknesses, some is rubber (using that term loosely) and some may look like fabric/rubber. Depending on the thickness of glass and channel it is installed in, you need to buy the thickness that will not crowd your glass and will still hold it in place.

I’m in the process of putting a much better frame (thanks to Charlie Gagel) under my 26 RPU. I’ve got the leaf springs all apart to paint them and apply Slip-Plate. My rear set has 8 leaves. Is this the correct number?
Last post
Ha! What an adventure ! As I remember, the ladies pushed your touring too. ....,No ones going to look up to the inside of your rear frame crossmember. Just ensure you have a long enough rear spring leaf bolt and put a shorty on top of your spring stack. Don’t forget the rubber or leather pad on top.

Running the Timer Control Rod Above the Lower Water Inlet Pipe….

My ‘25 Coupe is driving me crazy trying to bend the timer control rod so I get full travel up at the lever on the steering column with correct timing also.
The problem is that a outside oil line from the magneto contact to the left front of the engine is in the way and the current control rod is bent like a wet noodle already. I have bent the rod...

For the factory fit, trim that lower hose, the repro hose sets come with that lower hose cut about 3 long or more.
Factory size is 2 3/4 length , so that the control rod runs under the metal pipe, and away from the hose. Even with an outside oiler on the front plate bolt, the timer rod clears fine.
Have found the Lang's offered specific year...

That is why I suspected it was safe to post the information.
Another family member might still own the home.
I know several cases where the man went to heaven and his wife still kept the phone account and paying the bill.

Make sure the headbolt threads and bolt head shoulders are clean and dry. Do not use oil, particularly with an aluminum heads. I like 40 to 45 ft-lb with aluminum. The bolt tension greatly increases with heat.

Are the top bows on a 1924 touring supposed to be flat or have a slight upward bow in the middle? The old ones are arched and the new ones purchased are flat. Just wondered which is correct?
Thanks

I’ll be using the old bows as they are still good. The new ones are too big in both directions to go into the metal corner pockets. However the same supplier shipped the curved corner pieces and they fit perfect! Go figured!! Now to get everything riveted into place in the pockets. Bet that’s gonna take a while.

1923 Touring Car Body Hardware???
by
George Hand » Thu Jan 20, 2022 2:43 pm
Awhile back I bought a '23 Touring Car in pieces, the body sheet metal is currently farmed out along with the wood, I need to come up with the hardware for the reassembly. I plan on asking my friends here questions to get me to that goal. For starters the catches for the doors have 4 flat head machine screws, my pile of parts only had 1 out of 12,...

Quick Change Transmission Bands

I bought some Guinn wooden transmission bands to replace my worn out cotton bands. I've never changed the bands before, but I know that my 20' engine has the quick change bands. Do I really need to remove the hog's head, or can I replace the bands through the transmission inspection area?
Last post
Thanks! I guess I can see what happens through the inspection door and if it doesn't work out just pull the hogshead.

Does anyone have the correct measurements for the side board width on a model TT stakebed?

I found the attached to be of great value. It came from a Model A site but the earliest AA appears to have used the same as the TT arrangement.

Hello!
As I am attempting to fish out a washer from the transmission I found one of my triple gears has a pretty significant rock on the pin. The other two gears feel good.
The transmission was rebuilt about 10 years ago (per previous owner) and runs pretty quiet. I had no idea that there was this issue.
Soooo, where do I go from here? I...

You're lucky you discovered this... before it's too late.
My failure happened on a trip to Napa.
The sound in the trans is like a rattle can paint spray, especially on deceleration. The wobbling gears will end up grinding off the lip of the reverse drum. Ask me how I know....
Do yourself a huge favor and replace them now before major...

If you have been following my blog, then you know what I'm up to.
If not, then here are some photos. I am in the process of making drawings for the body sills for my Centerdoor. Using photos and measurements taken from my original wood pieces and pieces owned by Terry Miller, I'll show you briefly what I've done. I'm not ready to show final...
Last post
Having received some rough pieces from another Centerdoor that is long gone, I’m readjusting my sill thickness to 1 1/4 inches instead of 1 5/16th inches.
I’ll probably cut new wood to the larger size and creep up to the smaller size. I’m not sure how much of a difference 1/16th inch makes over all. I do know the floorboards are 5/8ths inch...

These accessory shock absorbers are on my '14. I would appreciate any help confirming whether or not they are early Hassler shocks. I've never seen another set. The design is certainly similar to the common bee hive Hasslers with the obvious differences being the spring design and the grease fittings. Given the initials RH (Robert Hassler?) and...

Has anyone seen this U&J part before? It is a sleeve for a dash/firewall control rod. Someone had installed it on a 1914 speedster that Im working on. They had run a Model A mixture rod thru it to control a Model A carb that was on the engine when I got the car. I have never seen this part before.
The little tube is 2-3/8 inches long and has a...

Ed, Thanks for the photo and the link. The original rod Stan shows and explains in the link let's me know how it works. Now I think I will replace it with something else for the speedster. I have a good U&J it needs to be with. Thanks again

I am in the process of refurbishing a vaporizer carb for my 27. I have most of it apart but struggling to get the outlet tube out so I can change it. The number looks like T266 or T288 , etc. I don't know, it's hard to make out.

I am rebuilding a late NH carb. I plan to apply a prime coat and a black finish coat. What is the best way to apply, brush or rattle can? What is a good paint to use? I plan on using Rust-Oleum.

I used TopFlite fuel resistant model airplane paint from a local hobby shop. It is the only thing I have found that has survived the toxic Minnesota gas formula. My Model A carb has lasted 8 years, still solid. The Rustoleum on the engine pan underneath turned to goop long ago.
