Body bracket to frame mounting?
by
varmint » Sat Feb 19, 2022 10:39 pm
First post
This is where the 1926 Coupe body sub-frame meets the frame on the driver's side.
The front bracket (pink) is not yet installed.
Q: Should there be any gap between the two (red circled) holes once everything is in place?
Thanks.

After pouring over images I found one from Bruce Brakke that shows the answer.
The other body mounts all have blocks of wood.

1911 trans shaft oil leak

My 1911 has two major oil leaks, one of them is at the right side of the trans where the high gear shaft goes thru the hogshead. I have attached pictures of that leak. How can that be fixed? The other leak, drip drip drip is at the front of the hogs head between the hogshead and oil pan and I will probably replace the hogshead gasket. While I have...

The use of a spring, washer, and o-ring is shown on page 30 of the MTFCA Transmission booklet. That example is on the left side of the shaft but would work on the right side too. You would need to remove the clutch fork pins/rivet and repin. The Hogshead video that Mike Bender has on you tube shows another method of cutting a groove in the shaft...

I was surprised to see this much felt packing in the two pack nuts. It was very difficult to remove. This may not be unusual, but thought I would show it anyway.
I also show a piece of new felt packing that was in a gasket kit I purchased. I am not going to use it but instead will purchase a neoprene seal.
I was curious about how the felt piece...

I'm at my wits end. I was driving my 1926 roadster and all of a sudden it started running strange. Plenty of power under acceleration then when the engine is under no load it starts missing and a bup bup sound from the muffler every time it misses. all misses are at a random intervals (not a steady miss like one cylinder isn't firing) Same thing...

Might want to wipe out the contact points with a paper business card with carb cleaner sprayed on it. A little oil/grease there will really have your head scratched bald (Ask me how I know). Everything done eliminates that idea! I agree with Scott on the leaning out condition.

Hi all,
Actually it's my son Eric who has recently bought a 1923 Model T. He learned to drive it on the flats in Bakersfield, CA and then trailered it up to Frazier Park where driving is a bit more challenging because of the hills. He installed a set of Rocky Mountain brakes while still in Bakersfield.
I've been helping him troubleshoot some...

I didn't see the debris myself but Eric said it was a bunch of oily lint, supposedly being shed by the transmission bands.

In my opinion, having a replacement engine in a '14 T diminishes it's value, so allow for that if negotiations ensue.
If it is a $2000 heap, then mox nix, but if $12,000, then it's a problem.

Well, that last one is not fair as they (AFAIK) have never been reproduced. The frustrating thing is when one supplier sells his business to someone else, and then they don't put it into production, or drop the quality. Great photo from that time. The Tudor is pretty neatly accessorized too.
Twin tail lamps, and lamp on the passenger front fender, perhaps one on the other side too for turn signals?
And that hooked on trailer hitch, probably not used much as the rear bumper bars are still straight :)

I've noticed a few cars of interest located out of state. I would not make a buy unless a full inspection was done by a Model T expert.
Do such experts exist for hire? If so, how would I find a person nearest the prospective car?
Last post
You might want to talk to local experts in your area before you travel. Tell them what you are interested in and have them go over the differences in the cars of your interest, most brass T guys that have been in the hobby for over 25 years have Bruces book, and other resources and can point out whats right or wrong.

Make sure any shells used, the mating surfaces, are not worn. The shells rely on the roughness of the split halves to lock them together. The lock C ring is there more as a helper for installing them, not to keep them from moving back and forth.

Like Frank said, if you have a collectible box or a valuable book that someone in the past has taped, do not try and pull the tape off. The tape will rip off the graphics that make the box, book or document, valuable. Instead, saturated the item with Naptha and keep it wet. You can soak one side of the box or document at a time and after the...

Radiator support rod - missing.
I re-threaded the radiator and found it to be 5/16 -24.

As it is they are the same diameter and thread per inch.
So, I ran a die on the end and cut the other end to length.
A large carriage bolt sacrificed its head,...

Steve's design is correct, the original rod in my '26 coupe is made the same way, just with functional threads all the way up to the head b/c the '26 coupe firewall bracket is thinner. My coupe also has a lock nut on the radiator end, which prevents the rod from vibrating and wallowing the threads in the radiator socket. FWIW, jb

My question is can I grind off the rivets on the column collar move it back the needed distance and reattach?

i would like to thank all the replys to my question on the length of my steering column. I tried txgoat2 suggestion on making the hole in the firewall slightly bigger than the flange and securing it to the engine side. It worked and now have the correct length on both rods.

The photo shows the left (non-ball end) clevis on the steering tie rod on my ‘24 as I found it after stripping the paint. Is it common to see the clevis brazed to the tie rod? I ask because this looks a little amateurish, and I don’t remember how the one on my ‘25 was attached when I stripped and painted it last fall....

Flux was also sometimes applied by waxy-like sticks with similar application difficulties. All of those methods resulted in excess flux being splattered all around the work area.
Sure was done that way! Note the worker on the right as he smears flux on the parts, the hole in the forging holds the brass wire that is melted to braze the joint....

I have looked up the past discussions and the subject has been well covered but it appears some say not to oil the new wood ?
When I picked up my newly spoked & fellowed wheels, they had been coated with 'raw' linseed oil. That was about 4 months ago and they have been just sitting since then. Sadly, it will be some years (probably) before that...

I mix a quart at a time. I thin it just a tiny bit so it soaks into the open grain of the wood nicely so the high build primer doesn’t soak in as much. It is compatible with the primer so that is the way I do it.

I have a question about a 1927 coupe roof. Is the roof flat from back to front, or is there a slight drop over the back of the door to the front? I have never seen another '27 coupe so, I don't have a reference to go by. If I clamp the side rail to the top of the door, it sticks up about an inch at the back of the rail over the side window....

Vernon, thanks for the tip. I did buy the wood from Fordwood because I'm a mechanic and don't have access to woodworking tools. However, it would have been nice to save the $$.

I picked this coil up in Findlay Ohio at Jefferies Antique Mall last weekend. I have a few boxes of coils but never seen one like this so of coarse I had to buy it (along with several other things :D ). Is this a Heinz coil? It sorta looks like some pictures I have seen but has a few differences. Experts?

Hello.
During my restoration of my front door, one suggested if such pockets couldn't be reproduced.
I want to contribute. As I was confirmed by »Humblej« in another thread, my door pocket appears to be an original one (100+ years old), so I took detailed measurements and made a technical drawing before I glue it to the 1.5 mm plywood (=...

For starters is it correct assume that the test points would be on the same place as the later coils?
What should I expect...
Last post
Matt,
You are on the right way.
I use paint stripper heat air gun, but pay attention not to burn the wood and take your time to open the box one piece at the time.
If some of the panels like to stay togheter just leave them. You just need to take out the coils and work inside the box.
Good luck

Thanks Dan

Would agree, keep to .040 for best results.
Also, have never placed a head gasket dry. Have always use good sealer, Permatex Copper gasket sealant, or quality alum spray paint with lots of metallic content, on both sides of the head gasket. No failures using good torque sequence too.

Even though these aren't signed, I'm certain they are Witt artwork. I have several of this same style that are signed, including the last one of the previous batch. Interesting to me is that the two completely different styles of artwork are both postmarked either 1917 or 1918, suggesting that they were drawn at the same time.

My last and final comment, what is the difference between turning the generator on a bench device with an electric motor and turning the generator on the motor?
No difference at all. That's how I test mine, on a bench device. The issue was with running the generator with no load applied. Doing that, either on a car, or on a test stand, can/will...

I'm working to pour new Babbitt in a 13 block, but the first and second main caps have thrust on them, which seems odd as compared to all the other engines I've done. Honestly, this will be the oldest engine I've done. I'm used to seeing thrust only on the third bearing cap. Is this normal or is this a home-brew modification that someone did over...

You only want thrust to be taken on one bearing, which allows for block and cranshaft differential expansion under heat.
