Hi all,
While trying to start my 23-26 frankenT, the wire on the cutout started to smoke. The tab for the generator wire was touching the generator since the tab has been bent down. The tab is now loose. Has anyone taken the cutout apart, and can it be repaired? I'm trying to keep it all original and was wondering if I can take the whole thing...

The choke wire sold by the vendors is brittle and if you have to “un-bend” the end on the carburetor the wire breaks easily. Am I installing wrong or is there a solution?

Pictured is a fork mounted electric headlight. (I've been unable to upload a picture)

There are no hinges for the ring that holds the glass lens in place.

Can anyone tell me how to get the ring off? I'm guessing that it may twist, but despite tryiing, it won't budge.

Any help is appreciated.

Steve's idea is great & loosely based on a rim removal wrench illustrated in the Ford Service Bulletins - simple blacksmithing involved without the need for a hinge. I've had good results with the headlight off the car on a piece of rubber belting on the floor so I could use my weight to force the rim down then twist.

Are they able to be disassembled? I have a set on the back of my car currently and would like to know if the spring cover/cylinder can be removed. I thought maybe it was screwed on but I don’t want to destroy them. I’d rather remove them and put them on the shelf then destroy them.

I was adjusting a generator yesterday and was puzzled to find I couldn't bring the charge rate below 8 amp.

This is with a replacement armature in a functional generator.

Segments are polished and vee-d and the armature was successfully growled a few years ago.

I set the null point as best I could following the MTFCA handbook and Ron...

Hard to hear about the quality on those parts. I replaced those on my machine, hope they last.

Let this be a lesson. Its nice to have parts available, but some are substandard. Trust no repop part blindly.
Verify. This particular part is usable after you fix it. A 1/2 a good part IS better than no part.

What is best for the tires?

I will put my Lizzy on top of four support frames so all wheels are one inch above garage floor. This will for sure not be wrong.

Should I reduce tire pressure then? My tires have very minor cracks on their sides. Lower pressure will cause less stress to them. right?

Does some sort of care product for tire rubber...

Take it to a good welding shop.

Nearly 60 years ago I worked in a tool welding shop, where I learned how to stick weld aluminum. Later, the shop used tig to weld aluminum.
Now just stick welding steel is about all I can handle.

OT, but one interesting thing I found out about my Flanders exhaust manifold - the exhaust ports are the same size as a big block Chevrolet! I needed new gaskets to fit around the gland rings, so I measured the ports and found that a big block chevy header gasket made a perfect donor. :)

Apart from the roll-up centre section of the back of the top, that car could well be a twin to my first real T model, a 1922 standard Duncan and Fraser tourer. Note the canvas top, the full length wooden hood bows fixed to a flat iron one man mechanism. By 1923 the tops were fitted with socket type bows.

Hasslers, most H&D type (made by many different companies!), and Float-a-Fords , are generally fine both front and rear.
But the ones that hang the Ford's front spring from a coil spring held up above from the axle? On the front end? NEVER!

Last week I found out why my front door randomly opens during driving my Lizzy, so this is another work over winter.

The spring inside the door lock mechanism must be either weak or broken , therefore the door easily opens when driving over a bump or when it is a little bit pushed from inner side.

I compared with rear (perfectly working) door...

This door lock doesn't appear to be a real problem. The most problem is getting it out of the door without damaging the inner coverage.

I have a '26 touring that I am attempting to install a horn in. The problem I am running into is that the car has a water pump so the original location for mounting is not available. I am trying to keep the water pump as the car has lived more of its life with it than without so I feel that it is this cars history. Is there a bracket available...

But I still have the horn hung from the rear of the bonnet (hood) rod via a home-made bracket.

Snyder's and Lang's catalogs have a ten piece set of door bumpers (A -702610 -NS). Where do these go? My 1927 coupe has one bumper on the top of each of the doors. I don't see any other.

Consulted the service bulletins last night. I found 2 different published float setting dimensions.
The typical view with a dimension of 15/64 (<1/4 ) Top of float to machined bowl surface.
The second dimension comes in a mention of the vaporizer float. It is stated as 1/4 , exactly the same as the previous carburetor.
Could this be a deviation...

I’ve never been real fussy with the Float Level and usually set it level when the Carby is held upside down.
Never use force to close the needle onto the seat. I’ve seen Blokes push the float upwards to bend the tag to achieve a level setting. This has the potential to damage a standard needle and seat and wreck the Viton tipped upgraded Valve....

On a modern 6v coil, is there a need to wire the primary with a resistor?

I carry a spare resistor and a spare module. You never know when you'll need one or the other, but you WILL need them! The starter solenoid is not reliable, either. It's a great truck, but the electrical stuff is of almost English quality.

Should I use washers on the head bolts on a CAST IRON head? 1926 Roadster.

I think it a combination of how many times the head has been planned (faced?) and how may times the bolts have been used (stretched), so washers do have a place to ensure you get proper pull down.

Clearing the holes is important, it surprises me how much gunk comes out of holes that spend most of their life containing the head bolt.

Working away on the ignition switch wiring but have derailed myself.

I removed all the wiring screws but putting them back in the correct places is a problem.

I didn't realize that they are two different lengths so now don't know which what goes where.

Any hints on where longs and shorts go?

It appears that it is a bolt that threads into some type of nut that is recessed in the wood. I can barely see the head of the bolt, but it appears to be round and flat so it would not be possible to get a wrench or socket...

It’s best to use the original contacts in the coil box if possible. The originals have a bronze content which make them a little stiffer and springy. Haven’t seen the reproductions lately but as noted the repos are to soft and don’t retain their springiness like the originals.

I found some greenhouse fabric snap clamps that fit nicely over the tubing of the windshield frame without the need for drilling. I'm also considering using some flat rare-earth magnets sewn in the lower seam to hold the fabric to the door. Not Period in the least although if I'm on tour and it's raining I won't care.

But instead, you find this...and what is it? It LOOKs sort of familiar, but still, it isn't quite right...nothing lines up where it should; the throttle arm is on the wrong side...and where the heck is the idle...

Tim left out one bit of information about the 90 psi on his 1911 torpedo, it was stroked by .25 inches and bored by .060 in. The displacement is 194 cu. In. With stock bore and stroke it would have about 80 psi. Still very good.

My stock 23.has 62 psi. on all 4 cylinders. New rings but not bored 6000 miles ago

I’ve been checking out a few miscellaneous cutouts that have accumulated over the years, and was surprised to find a diode in one of them.

I think this one is actually set up for positive ground… I can’t see a polarity indicator on the diode, but current flows when the input terminal is connected to 6-vt Neg and the output is connected to 6-vt...

Simple question perhaps - what is the greatest tolerance between piston to bore with modern aluminium standard compression pistons?

I see some manufacturers recommend .002 to .003 and one thread I read someone posted up to .015,...
