Not sure how I'm even going to test this when I'm done, since I don't have an engine that really can put it through its paces, but it sure is fun to figure out how the devil to get these things apart...and the OE-1 has a few chinese puzzle-box features to cypher out. Oddly enough, both ears on the float cover broke off when the rusty screws came...

yes, it's a Stromberg OE-1 that is uniquely jetted and branded specifically for Studebaker. The Studebaker cover is identical to standard Stromberg covers and are interchangeable.

I am listing a horn bracket on eBay. It has an old round label attached to it with a string that has Klaxon written on it. Thank you, Terry. I was going to mention that, but didn’t want to influence any comments I received. It is possible that the label is wrong and the person that put it on was not sure what he had. No worse than an old Laurel and Hardy movie. I doubt anyone would think it's real or attempt it themselves. It was all for the shot, she had to face the camera! I do like how the car started to shake and the engine began to run while she was still cranking though.

Going thru some more boxes from the auction. Found these two bearings. One is an original Ford bearing and the other is the modern replacement for it. The bearing is approx 4-1/2-inch OD, 2-3/8 ID, and 7/8 inch thick. I did not have a mic handy so I just measured it with a ruler. The picture shows the original part number with TT and Ford script....

212 is the original side thrust rux bearing #. Current # 7212. 6212 would be the same dimensionally without side thrust.(never use in a rux)
As far a s TT, I know nothing. I would not guess them to use the same bearings. The alphabet behind the number indicates cage & seal info.
Its rux sized. 60x110x25mm

Does the neoprene gas line packing work any better than the felt packing. Just installed a new gas tank and line on the ‘24 Coupe a few days ago and for the first time ever have tiny gas drips.
Over repeated tightening the felt is compressed to the max and the nuts will not tighten any more. I suppose I might try additional packing or will the...

We use EZ TURN, fuel lube on gas and oil fittings. Takes up some of the slop in old threads and doesn't degrade when exposed to petroleum products. Keeps those pesky little drips away. For almost 50 years, I have known of a 1926 coupe that has a well worn sticker on the bottom left corner of the windshield. From what I recall, it was a notice to the customer about break in speed for the first 500 miles, general care, tire size, etc. The car has never been apart; it may have been “brushed-up” in the 1950s or 1960s. My question...

Dan,
Thank you. With this information, the history of the car, and the remnant of the sticker on the windshield, I would assume it is,indeed, from when the car was new.

Does it matter that it is below the mechanism? Must it be higher for gravity feed or is there a negative pressure (positive pressure?) that sucks the fluid into the brake lines.......

Fine Line Between Hoarding and Collecting

I wanted to attend the Model T Haven auction but family obligations prevented that. My only interest in attending was to see it for the first and last time, and to give someone a run for their money on the snowmobile parts. I have bought a couple of things from Mark a decade or two ago with mixed satisfaction. I have no real need to travel so far...

This is the future. There has been at least one other “model t collection” auction recently where entire shelves and bins of parts were sold for a few bucks. You can’t be for “keeping the hobby alive” and also care about getting the money out of a part you paid top dollar for 40 years ago. Times are changing.

The small spaces between commutator segments can become packed with material from the brushes which can allow current to leak from one segment to another instead of passing through the armature windings and energizing the motor. Old oil and gum can interfere with brush function too. The narrow spaces between the commutator segments can be cleaned...

My friend with the 1922 has been using a lot of oil. We pulled the head and there appears to be a fair amount of burnt oil. I've attached photos of the #1 piston soon after he bought it last summer and when we pulled the head again a couple of days ago after maybe 400 miles. Compression was 40 psi (cold). The cylinders are shiny and smooth with no...

It sounds like you have covered the bases and given the car a good shakedown. It looks like a general overhaul is the next step for the powerplant. Vlaves and oil burning aside, and while not an absolute necessity, a good mag is a good thing to have. I like having the option of using the starter, or starting on the spark , or hand cranking on...

Serial number 3086, where is it now?

I have an article about my hometown of Alexandria, Louisiana, and it discusses a gentleman who owned a 1909 Ford Model T back in the 1950s.
The article states it's serial number 3086.
Where is this car now? Just curiosity, since it was running streets I know well.
I have the article and picture saved but can't seem to post it here.
Thanks...

David,
If 3084 survived into the 1950s as a running fairly original car -- it most likely is still around barring some major disaster such as a garage fire etc. An early May 1909 car would have been very disirable then as well as now.
Note if the only thing with the 3084 number on it was a reproduction ID plate and the car was actaully a put...

Hi all,
While trying to start my 23-26 frankenT, the wire on the cutout started to smoke. The tab for the generator wire was touching the generator since the tab has been bent down. The tab is now loose. Has anyone taken the cutout apart, and can it be repaired? I'm trying to keep it all original and was wondering if I can take the whole thing...

John, Any relativity to the short & your inability to test your non-working coils? That smoking wire may have caused an open in the smaller yellow battery voltage feed wire to the junction block on the firewall. That feed wire starts at the hot side of the foot starter switch. As Ford never provided any fuse protection on a Model T that is an...

Rich, you are right about the way the breeders are buggering up breeds for showing. They put so much slope in the backlines of German shepherds the poor dogs developed deformed spines. Pictured is a fork mounted electric headlight. (I've been unable to upload a picture)
There are no hinges for the ring that holds the glass lens in place.
Can anyone tell me how to get the ring off? I'm guessing that it may twist, but despite tryiing, it won't budge.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Steve's idea is great & loosely based on a rim removal wrench illustrated in the Ford Service Bulletins - simple blacksmithing involved without the need for a hinge. I've had good results with the headlight off the car on a piece of rubber belting on the floor so I could use my weight to force the rim down then twist.

Are they able to be disassembled? I have a set on the back of my car currently and would like to know if the spring cover/cylinder can be removed. I thought maybe it was screwed on but I don’t want to destroy them. I’d rather remove them and put them on the shelf then destroy them.
Thanks

Bob,
Hard to hear about the quality on those parts. I replaced those on my machine, hope they last.
Let this be a lesson. Its nice to have parts available, but some are substandard. Trust no repop part blindly.
Verify. This particular part is usable after you fix it. A 1/2 a good part IS better than no part.

I will put my Lizzy on top of four support frames so all wheels are one inch above garage floor. This will for sure not be wrong.
Should I reduce tire pressure then? My tires have very minor cracks on their sides. Lower pressure will cause less stress to them. right?

Now just stick welding steel is about all I can handle.

Apart from the roll-up centre section of the back of the top, that car could well be a twin to my first real T model, a 1922 standard Duncan and Fraser tourer. Note the canvas top, the full length wooden hood bows fixed to a flat iron one man mechanism. By 1923 the tops were fitted with socket type bows.
