Cast iron pistons question

Does anyone know if cast iron pistons are supposed to be cam ground or not. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the cast iron originals were not. I believe they did have some relief in the ring land area. Aluminum pistons required a lot of re-thinking to control expansion and dimensional changes.

I was called by someone with a 1925 tudor with this story:
Since the rebuild of the engine, 5 years ago, the engine doesn't run very well. First the rebuilder said he need to run in the engine. After a few hundred miles the engine run better but have still no power. He changed the coils with good rebuilds and rebuild the carburetor, still no...

I first did what Norman said and started with the basic first. Inspecting the ignition.
The timer was the Anderson (flapper) timer. The rod was set with the two holes timer gauge.
To start the engine the ignition lever had to be set about one inch down and than it was still hard to start...

My oil pan is absolutely straight, the former specialist only over-tightened the bolts a bit. So this caused slight pull-ups around some bolt holes.
So there is absolutely no need for a replacement, everything is fine.

I started pulling apart the tap and the filter is stuffed. Can I buy a replacement?

I have a 1926 coupe.

Some radiator shops can hot dip the tank then apply ethanol resistant red coat to the inside of the tank. You will have to repaint the outside. Be sure to tape off the threaded reas before the shop red coats the inside. It is hard to get out of the threaded parts.

I will be going through some spare coils this next week and my books on the subject are in another location. My HCCT has a ammeter but no volt meter. Do I remember correctly that cranking at kinda sorta 1 rps will give me 6 volts to work with? As I get older I wish I could adapt this unit to some sort of electric motor to spin the HCCT. Need to...

I bought the HCCT so long ago I don’t remember the details but it was cobbled up from different testers and rebuilt by a club member. All I vaguely remember is that he moved from up North to near Corpus Christi, Texas many years ago. Now that I know I can use it ok without the volt meter I am not too worried. Would really like one of the smaller...

Does the MTFCA have a classified ads section? If so how does one access it? Also, if so, it should not be so difficult to find, much less access. Someone please tell me...

I am working on a rear drop bracket for my speedster and I need to know the outside diameter of the rear spring mount (the one at the end of the axle). I want to be sure that the bracket will clear the spring when the suspension flexes. I don’t have one of the original mounts here to measure.
Could someone measure an original bracket for me?

Apologies if I used the incorrect terminology. I am looking for the outside diameter of this part, where the shackle bolt bushing passes through. Based on the shackle and the spring, the part is 2” wide.

In plumbing terms, we describe that piece as nipple. The threads are a different kettle of fish. Most likely the end going into the mag post is 1/8 taper thread. Henrietta, my 1925 Canadian car, has its original apron still in place. Many of the decisions on the manifold gasket choice have to do with the condition of the exhaust manifold. So you should check that first, it will make a difference on your purchase(s).

Knowing how some are opposed to using a buzz box tester, I constructed a second unit that is powered by an AC transformer with 0 to 15 volts AC out.
It is interesting to note the sound of an AC vs DC adjusted ignition coil.
Just can't justify having a microchip dominate the turning of a screw ....
Top box AC powered as Voltage from the magneto....

I built a box using an American Flyer train transformer for the power supply, as it puts out 7 to 14 VAC. yes I know there are much better systems out there to texst coil, but this was simple to build with stuff on hand and it will get a coil to work--maybe not optimally but it will work!

Now repair the old armature, find a bad armature, press out both shafts and press in the replacement. I have never done it but it can be done.

With that wide flat flange, I would think the best option would be to slice the crimped over section off, and use bolts & nuts to put the flange back together, this would also facilitate servicing later.

The Montana 500 rules mandate the use of a stock NH carburetor to LIMIT THE VEHICLE's SPEED...Since they routinely exceed 50 MPH anyway, running original displacement, original cranks, and a stock NH, let that sink in!
Once production really ramped up, Ford installed the cheapest, simplest, fastest-to-fabricate carb possible and even at...

Starter motor removal

Can I remove the starter as a whole unit (bendix and all) through the front of the hogs head? Coil field and magnets have been removed previously and slingers installed. Removing hogs head to replace low speed shaft cams. Thanks much.
Last post
Service manual breaks it down. If you are removing the HH, yes, lift up the starter side 2 , comes right out. When you put the HH back on, you would want to seal the HH & install the starter with the bendix off after to get a good seal. You could try removal without lifting the HH. Let us know how it works out this way. Its a 4 screw experiment....

The hay wagon made out of a late Model T chassis found in a Farmer's field has been purchased. It will make its way from Ennis, Tx to Houston to be turned into a Model T Speedster. The fenders, splash aprons, and running boards are in Johnston, PA purchased but not picked up: Other than that it basically needs everything.

Does anyone know if these are Model T brass rods?
They measure 72 inches and are only bent at the top.
I thought they were for an 1911 roadster (running board to windshield) , but they seem too long???
Thank you!
Bob

Thank you JT. I will sell them as brass rods for whatever purpose and let the buyer cut them down for their needs.

I didn't see a new topic for this month. This T Speedster isn't mine but I thought you'd still like to see the progress thus far.
I'm wrapping up the little things in this journey of the Speedster rebuild. Question is will the car move under its own power? Check out the video to find out!
There are several other videos in the series, If you...

looking for a good used 26-27 radiator

Hi All,
Sorry to put this in the general discussion forum, but time is short for Hershey. I'm looking to replace my now useless radiator. I would like to find a good, used, NOT leaking radiator for the 26-27. I will be going to Hershey next week on Thursday and can pick it up then if anyone has one. Please contact me here or at:...

A 90 year old radiator can look great and not leak but still won’t cool. Eventually you will give up and buy a new radiator. It’s up to you how much money you waste before then. There is a reason original ones become available. People get tired of boiling the coolant.

Digging through an estate collection of Model T parts and came across this KR Wilson fixture. I think it is for checking connecting rods. It has a number A335 cast in it.
Am I correct?
Is it for T rods?

Found this manifold mixed in with an A heater manifold. It lines up with the ports on a T block.
Looks like a zoom zoom updraft carburetor would fit.
Last post
Scott, I think I have the exhaust manifold too.
It has a piece broke off of one of the ports.
I see the carb mounting holes are 90deg from the T manifold....thanks for the link.

I have been helping a older gentleman getting his T back on the road. It was put away 1 1/2+ years ago following a loud Clunk while backing it out of his garage, then pushed back into the garage, and due to health issues there it has sat. While we were attempting to get it going with the electric started the Clunk repeated, the starter bound-up,...

Once you have the armature shaft straight, you may well find that the snout on the end casting is also bent. This is somewhat difficult to negotiate a cure. If it is left bent the likely result is a severely worn whitemetal bush in the snout. I have had some success fitting a bronze bushing and then machining its inside diameter, which is a little...

Three things to note:
A. Look at how the engines smoked when they were first started. Probably the rings were not seated until after the test drive was complete.
B. The paint process looks identical to the Model T Ford. They were not so much sprayed as they were applied with what looks like a garden hose nozzle, with the excess just dripping off...
