Here we are fitting the steering bracket for Hay wagon to speedster project. It is a bit off. The front hole in the base to the frame lines up, see the bolt and nut is on red circle. The other is somewhat off (red circled) and the top one is definitely off. What might be the problem? I realize that I need to put the base flange under the rail not...

Yep... this is what I cautioned you about last year when you were seeking firewall brackets for an earlier firewall on a ‘26-‘27 frame. At that time I offered a correct earlier frame for $50. This steering column bracket quandary is an example of T parts not being totally interchangeable.

Last post
We could buy off-the-shelf 2 long bronze bushes to suit T model front and rear shackles. A set of those could be left just long enough for that shackle to work well. Good original forged shackles are likely better than the repops available. Yours may not even be for a Ford, but they are likely better than others you will find.

Yep thats a valve sring compesser. They make them in all sizes from Briggs & Straton to big truck. I prefer them to most made for model T's they give you more room to install the pin in the valve stem. You can add washers to the yoke if its to small for what you are working on (up to a point)
It's allways great to get bonus tools.

How long can the T run on battery ignition ?

joe.wal » Sun Aug 29, 2021 8:27 am

What is new to my T is that it sputters under acceleration (even on level ground).
I opened both outlets at the bowl and carburetor - fuel was running freely and was clean.
After that for a few miles everything was fine, regular acceleration power.
Then again sputtering (I hear 'patch patchadipatchpatch' from the carburetor), letting fuel flow,...
Last post
What I found out is that there is no stuttering when I move the throttle veeery slowly and steadily down to accelerate ///// This suggests a weak ignition system. It may or may not be a battery voltage problem. If you can run on mag most of the time, a good battery will last a long time, assuming you use the starter very little. Besides a problem...

but the car had been rotting for years. The wooden pickup bed my grandfather built was intact. But the rest of the car was in terrible shape. The front seat was stuffed with horsehair, and rodents had had a field day. Some of the metal was damaged through the years, and the whole thing stank to high heaven.

The old man steps up to his car,
It is a very old one with narrow tires.
It has a crank handle out front,
And he grasps it with his right hand.
He puts out a wire loop on the left,
And pulls up the crank four times,
then steps around to the left side
And turns a key and a buzz is heard.
He returns to the crank and takes hold,
He spins the crank...

This is the ending I was going to use for my poem.
The old car is an old, old friend,

The old man gets in the old car,
And drives down the road for one last time.

jaybee47 » Fri Sep 10, 2021 11:37 pm
First post
How difficult will it be to return to a conventional commutator from a distributor? Is it simply removing the distributor and alternator and installing a generator and timer along with new wiring and coils and coil box?
Last post
If you have a coilbox, all you need is available from the vendors, but I would go to one of the coil rebuilders for coils rather than buy new ones.
There are alternative timers available, mechanical ones like roller or Anderson flapper style, and electronic ones. Your choice, your expense.
Others will have other ideas.

Are Model T valve lifters are intended to rotate while the engine is running?
If so, are new lifters crowned slightly and the cam lobes tapered slightly to encourage this rotation?

I changed out the fan hub to a ball bearing model because the hub was slinging grease out over the hood & wooden hood clash strips. It works great, no more messy grease. That is a very practical solution. The '23 has a screen in the breather, I wonder if this one does? Another item to check!

Yes, the tank should hold water. The byproduct that will end up in this tank is calcium hydroxide. It is quite corrosive, and you’ll want to wash and air out the generator and internal parts well after use. I used POR-15 on the inside of the generator, which has held up well. I also line the lower basket with a crock pot liner, which makes cleanup...

. Item 2 in the picture, that is for drilling and counter sinking the lining right? Mark it with a marker from the back of the brake, drill it through from the back of the lining...

I discovered that there is a little ridge near the bottom of the tool that makes it not flop around on a vise. That helped a lot. Some of the rivets went on better than others. I have one completed. I did only a few rivets at a time to make sure the holes aligned. I marked about 3 holes at a time and drilled them then riveted 2 leaving one free so...

Advice for 90 degree bend on solid brass half oval?

It is time to put the brass trim on the firewall. How to bend the pictured sold brass half oval at a 90 degree? I have read several places to do not heat it that it will break. I am thinking of just putting it into a vise and bending it, will that work? Is there a better way?
Last post
I heated it cooled it 3 times before bending with a MAPP gas torch. I never saw it turn red. I just got it 'real hot'. I notched it once, bent the two parts together until they kissed then notched again to get to 90 degrees.

My T is run rough and missing. I noticed that the carburetor leaks when parked unless I shut the gas off while it's running until it starves itself of gas. I'm pretty far from a mechanic and I'm still new model t's so any help would be appreciated.

this is your second post about pretty much the same problem as the other post, except this time you are leaving out some critical details...like the fact that the car ran fine before hitting a huge bump.

2. Purchase the MTFCA carb manual to see how to...

Brake Band Replacement Help

Hi folks,
I need to replace just my brake band. I drive in an urban area with lots of stop signs and brake lights so the band suffers. With removable ears, can I replace the brake band without removing the others through the access door? When I try, the new band ends up riding over the reverse and jams up.
Appreciate any advice and knowledge....
Last post
Speedytinc, thanks. I’ll give it another try and pull the left end of the band as far back as I can. Perhaps there’s magic there. A Labor Day activity.

I recently rebuilt the whole front axle and steering parts on my Runabout. It was prone to a severe wobble at around 12-14 mph. I replaced the steering gearbox, gears, steering column shaft, pitman arm, steering bracket bushing, wood block behind the bracket, Anco adjustable drag link caps with solid, shackles, every bolt on the axle, wheel...

Allan, I bent spindle arms, not spindles. I was able to bend my axle from 3.5 to 2 degrees negative camber with a 20 ton press and heat. The bent end is too short to get good leverage to bend further with my tools.

Alas, I'm ignorant and need to learn.

In addition to carb issues, I had a coil box cover shorting coils, three out of four coils were out of tune and double firing, and my ignition switch is still on the blink.
We fixed it all and ran a jumper to bypass the switch. My Al Clark rebuild runs like a sewing machine. It ran last night beautifully.

I have numerous seat springs, some I’m sure are are for a Model T.
Can anyone please help with some sizes of them ?

I also have what I think is a Center door folding seat, I’ll post a picture of it later.

A couple of years ago, I ordered a complete glass set for a 1927 Model T. Coupe. I received the crate, and set it aside, as at that time the body was in a paint shop locally, and not accessible to me.

It is my understanding the the dimensions in the glass books will be too large to fit with the modern glass tracks such as the ones from Mac's, etc.

The plan is to try the fit of them, and then...

You get an A+ for cleverness, but if you don't have a stock T cam, that was quite an exercise in futility. A new cam has been designed for a VERY small pushrod gap and now that you have a new cam and wide open clearances (as listed in the manual), you've gained a noisy engine and have probably de-tuned the cam.
At least your valves will run...

Has anyone used the 80 grit Timesaver? I've used the 60 grit, which works fast, and the 100 grit which takes awhile. It seems to me the 80 grit would be the way to go, but haven't used it.

Like you say it all works. Depends on the application.. The lower the grit the harder it is to turn. When doing mains or rods, I use medium grit and don't bolt things down too tight at first. Follow the directions and be sure to add oil frequently. A couple applications doesn't hurt. Smiley face.
