I was under the impression that it was slightly safer to hand start a model T or mag in regards to the less likely they were to kick back. My car is a non-electric car. Well I had something happen to me today that I would’ve never thought would happen. Apparently one of my coils moved in the coil box and shorted in a way that caused it to be...

It looks like the bridge of #4 coil was hitting the coil box cover. It’s an old aftermarket one. I could move the lid around a little and recreate the short.

I am curious. If I should forgo my method of adjusting coils with the attached buzz box and not depending on the HCCT that I received years ago from an early Ford Dealership to set coils, what benefits would I feel or see?
With my methods of using the box and making certain the cushion springs are free, I can travel at 30-35 mph with no bulking...

I would expect to see improved economy and more consistent response to the driver's throttle, carburetor adjustment, and spark timing inputs... in short, a smoother, sweeter-running engine. Torsional vibration would likely be reduced in both bandwidth and intensity.

Compressing Radiator Mounting Springs.

So I'm trying to instal the radiator on my 26/7 touring. I have the diagram of how it all goes together and I understand how I can draw up the bolt with the nut compressing the spring in the frame. Then put in a block of wood to hod it. I'm also using the correct 26/7 bolt and spring kit.
My question is how do you compress the top spring? I...

I'll second that Steve. I use very light springs on the alloy hood on my 1912 van. It do not require much clamping force to hold a hood down.

I had a similar problem on my '25. I wanted to use the early design switch that is held together with two screws. When installed correctly in the car, it wouldn't quite reach through the floor. Zinc scuff plates

My early '26 roadster came with what I believe to be zinc door sill plates. They have some minor damage. I would like to repair what is missing on one of them and fix the crack on the other. Can this be done? Also, what is the best way to restore these sill plates? Glass bead sandblasting or would another method be better?
Last post
Can't help on welding cracks in zinc, as fumes from zinc are very dangerous to your health.
On mine, just left the few bumps and cracks as 'patina'. The repro parts in aluminum don't look good to me at all. So keep your originals original.
Just buffed the surfaces of the plates on the buffing wheel, then a coat of wax, provided a nice sheen that...

David, I take your point about the thread starting somewhat deeper in the lug nuts. My concern with the A model nuts was that the length of thread in the nuts would not be as long as a T nut, and so it may bottom out on the stud before engaging on the hub centre.

Hello fellow Model T-ers,
Would anyone know if these cast iron front armrest brackets were original equipment on a Model T? The example pictured is on a friend’s 1912 Touring. My 1911 Touring doesn’t have them.
As you can see in the photographs on early Touring Cars they would attach horizontally along the top of the front seat riser and then...

Hi, this 1915 rear lamp door probably isn't original and doesn't close all the way without forcing it then it pops right back open. I think the tang on the hinge isn't long enough. The brass door itself seems to be the right size. It also does not have a clasp at the top. Suggestions on how to get this to work are much appreciated.

I'm going to keep this in my T in case I need to air up a tire.
1 Does the piston prefer oil, like other air tools, or should it run dry?
2 Does it matter which cylinder it goes in?

This my backup. I was pleasantly surprised to find how well it works.

The key to using the second pump is the type of chuck you put on it. The pump has no check valve, and uses the valve in the tube stem to do that job. That means you have to use a chuck with no center pin, so it will allow the valve to close between strokes.

Here's mine. I suggest:
Trim the roof fabric so it ends behind the rail and is tacked in place.
Form the outer part of the rail to fit the contour of the body
Etch prime (for good paint adhesion because it's aluminium) and paint the outer rail. Satin black is good.
Screw the inner rail in its correct place - but then remove the screw near the aft...

If you need to have threads on the end why not use a piece of all thread or a cut off bolt and weld it on the end of the handle. That way you don't need to weld a square shaft and then turn it down to round and thread it.

The TT needs to be filled all the way to the bottom of that rear plug. Leaving it lower like is appropriate for T car rear ends is not appropriate for the TT rear end. Also don’t overlook the importance of the seal at the back of the driveshaft tube...

I'd think putting the lever in neutral (with the clutch stuck) would have the car in high, and that forcefully rocking it back and forth would probably unstick the clutch. If not, 1. They were recalled (Chevrolets), but a few are in private hands. The cooling fins were solid copper bar rings with cast iron poured over them. Since they did not inoculate as they poured the iron, the rings came loose in a short time in operation and cracked the cylinders. Interesting story from times past.

What I am familiar with has a cast aluminum body with a round ball enlarged area @ the disk. The screw is to set the spring tension for the movement of the disk. It is actually designed to be an automatic choke. I think the ideal thing to do is to remove the auto choke feature disk.

I've never had an Anderson or other flapper. Can you set timing the same way you do with a roller or brush timer (turn until you get a buzz, then back off a hair)? I don't expect to change timers, but if somebody asks I don't want to give them wrong information.

The reason to use #1 is that it's easiest to reach and put your thumb on the hole to find compression when you pull the crank. :D

I don't know if you're doing this, but for one thing, do not sit for any length of time with the timer retarded. When idling or waiting for a light or anything else, be sure the timer is advanced such that the engine has attained it's highest speed at idle. Some folks will throw the lever up and let the exhaust bark out the back while...

My 1926 car has been running well with the Motometre showing the red just below the little window. All of a sudden a few days ago it started pushing the Motometre thermomoter to the very top. I changed a questionable plug and a week buzz coil and readjusted the commutator. Still goes to the top ( 225 degrees F ) after only 8 miles. What can I do...

You may look your timing... it is often the responsable for overheating. Also be sure the fan properly work without sliding belt... Also be sure the fan blade are correctly oriented. Other point, flush your radiator as Jeff said. Last point to validate, you may have leaking intake cause overheating either. I'm saying all these elements because I...

When the Union Pacific Railway decided to restore a Big Boy locomotive, they originally chose an example that was on display in, if I remember correctly, Texas. That example was later abandoned due to the fact that the railroad bridges between Texas and the U.P. shops in Wyoming wouldn't bear the weight of a Big Boy.
Instead, the 4014 was chosen...

I am about to buy my first Model T. I want a nice bright flashing red light for the back before I take it out on the busy streets. Can anyone recommend a good one? I don't care if it has it's own battery or if it's hard wired to the car battery (not sure if six or twelve volts)

I run them in all my T's. They make for optimal band adjustment.
The current ones available were copied from ones I redesigned from the original design to add O=ring seals.
I sold a few sets to vendors. I think Chaffins still stocks my units. One of the...

The engine in my 23 runabout has an elusive engine knock. Cutting out cylinders 1,2, and 4 makes no change in the sound. When I kill cylinder 3 the noise goes away. I thought the center main may still be loose even though cutting out cylinder 2 doesnt change the sound. So, I dropped the pan and checked it with plasti gauge. It measured out at...

Warford I D needed

I saw three Warfords the other day. One was slighlty larger, and had a removeable plate on one side, possibly for a PTO. It says Plant No 1 Syracuse New York on the side with the plate. The other side says Warford with patent information and the company address with a number 920-1 .
Is this Warford for a TT ? Sorry I cant add photos.
Thanks
Last post
Re the cast iron one with side plate; Yes was really for TT, but can be used in a car. Do a search of MTFCA; Warford It is a little more involved than just bolting it in. When used in a car, you needed a different rear support then the truck, the frame depth was different.

I have not read all the post about your overheating problem.
That said, I have one or two questions.
Have you removed the head?
If so, did you put the head gasket on right way?
Good luck, Dan.

I filled my radiator up almost to the top and have been driving it for about an hour and a half today. I was climbing some hills in low and the radiator started blowing out a lot of steam through the overflow tube. Is that a problem?

Should I get magnetic blinkers? If so what type? And will they stay on with with vibration?
Last post
The answer to your second question is maybe, depending on what they are. For a few years I used HF magnetic trailer lights in order to have tail lights, not blinkers. I used welding rod hooks and rubber bungees to keep them from bouncing off the fenders. The last time I used them the rough road shook one of them to pieces. I'm currently in the...

Hello.
Today I started with disassembling my 1916 Touring. I need to pull the engine to rework the high speed clutch.
I tried to open the 2+ inch nut from exhaust manifold, but I had no success. I applied a lot of force using a 60cm long pipe wrench, but I am scared to break something (either this thin clamps for holding the manifolds to the...

Another benefit of the Aussie made copper gaskets is the heavy weigh of the material. They can even be filed a little to make a taper on one side which will make lining up and installation easier, and even compensate for a little warping downwards of the rear and front ports.

old car legality

Is there any laws stipulating that a car 94 years old with no brake lights, blinkers, tail lights, or seatbelts are legal? I have asked a couple of police officers, and they said that it was fine considering the age of the car. Anyone looked into this?
Last post
Calif law is sometimes difficult to interpret, but if you have a car that qualifies for Horseless Carriage plates you do not need a brake light IF the car did not come with one! Conversely you MUST have a Drivers Side rear view mirror, regardless if the car came with one or not. The laws are different from state to state and just because the first...

Radiator Cap Finally all the parts

I finally was able to piece together the radiator cap that I have been really wanting.
The question is;
Is there enough exposed Motor Meter to read?
I'm thinking the rubber piece should be right at the threaded cap.
So the rubber piece should be moved.
Am I right or is it ok where it is?

What should a brass horn sound like?

Hello....I have a 1914 Model T, but the only horn I could find was off a 1912 Model T. It was nice looking and solid brass so I decided to use it. I think it has an OK sound, but my wife says it sounds like a sick goose. I was wondering what the horns were supposed to sound like? Were there differences between the years? Are there certain reeds...
Last post
I think they all sound different to some degree. They aren't musical instruments; they are alarm devices. Many of them emit a sound evocative of that emitted when a goat comes into contact with an electrified fence.
