Change from distributor to the standard commutator
Replies: 2
by
jaybee47 » Fri Sep 10, 2021 11:37 pm
First post
How difficult will it be to return to a conventional commutator from a distributor? Is it simply removing the distributor and alternator and installing a generator and timer along with new wiring and coils and coil box?
Last post
If you have a coilbox, all you need is available from the vendors, but I would go to one of the coil rebuilders for coils rather than buy new ones.
There are alternative timers available, mechanical ones like roller or Anderson flapper style, and electronic ones. Your choice, your expense.
Others will have other ideas.

Recently up graded from a 1923 Touring to a 1914 Touring. The 1914 has side lamps made by The Victor Lamp Co. I have been attempting to remove the font on the lamps to add oil, but will be damned if I can figure out how to do so. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

After thinking a bit more I see one of the notches is the slot for the shaft that turns the wick up and down. In that case one of the tangs should be visible under that shaft when they are correctly aligned.
I'm glad you took the safe side. Too many of these fonts have been damaged and are missing. I believe prying on them was that culprit.

Just noticed this myself but if any of you people get the Motortrend channel Roadkills Engine Masters (Dave Freiberger and Steve Dulcich) will be Dino testing engines for rotating mass. Less weight to rotate is the title. It’s on at 8:30 tonight. Might give some solid info on cast iron vs aluminum.

Yes, the tank should hold water. The byproduct that will end up in this tank is calcium hydroxide. There appear to be multiple brands of 4 post lifts on the market. Any recommendations as to a good brand or comments/bad experiences with any particular brand? Though the Model T sits up much higher than more modern iron my age is showing more and more and crawling on the concrete floor is becoming a problem for me. I believe the biggest problem...

The issue of raising the front end or rear end was solved by buying tall jack stands. I raise the lift to normal height and place these jack stands under the axle and lower the lift a couple of inches. The front or rear is lifted to work on wheels, brakes and just recently changed shackles on a 25 T. When I changed the shackles I put the jack...

Hi, the rear brake linings are on but now the wheel won't go on. The other side went on snugly and does not roll freely. This side doesn't seem to go on at all. What am I doing wrong?
Last post
Adam is correct. Wheels should turn freely with brake off. The position of the hand brake lever when all the way forward, the pins should go in without forcing or bending the rod. This can be done by adjusting the clevis either tighter or looser. When it is correct, the lever should not move when you push in the low pedal. If the lever goes...

I heated it cooled it 3 times before bending with a MAPP gas torch. I never saw it turn red. I just got it 'real hot'. I notched it once, bent the two parts together until they kissed then notched again to get to 90 degrees.

Does anyone know who makes the 12 volt alternator that is a direct replacement for the gear-driven six volt generators on later Model T's? I know the vendors sell them but wonder who they get them from?
Last post
Belt on px side. Oil pump in gererator hole for pressure mains. AC compressor on Px side and alternator mounted on top of compressor. All riven with one serpentine belt. Works great!
I'd love to see a pic of that install!..
Wife wants AC in her T (yet to be purchased).. I'd like to also see the condenser mount..

Timesaver

Has anyone used the 80 grit Timesaver? I've used the 60 grit, which works fast, and the 100 grit which takes awhile. It seems to me the 80 grit would be the way to go, but haven't used it.
Last post
Like you say it all works. Depends on the application.. The lower the grit the harder it is to turn. When doing mains or rods, I use medium grit and don't bolt things down too tight at first. Follow the directions and be sure to add oil frequently. A couple applications doesn't hurt. Smiley face.

The tall base has Ford script with PN T 7316 A1.
The small one is not Ford, however, has the same part number barely legible of PN T 7316 A1.
Same part number different height? What do these go to? What gives?
Thanks,

OK, I see the 3 v. 4 hole phenom. However, why are they different heights and the diameter of tubes are different sizes?

I was under the impression that it was slightly safer to hand start a model T or mag in regards to the less likely they were to kick back. My car is a non-electric car. Well I had something happen to me today that I would’ve never thought would happen. Apparently one of my coils moved in the coil box and shorted in a way that caused it to be...

It looks like the bridge of #4 coil was hitting the coil box cover. It’s an old aftermarket one. I could move the lid around a little and recreate the short.
Silly little things that drive you nuts. Guess it’s part of the excitement of the hobby. :D

I am curious. If I should forgo my method of adjusting coils with the attached buzz box and not depending on the HCCT that I received years ago from an early Ford Dealership to set coils, what benefits would I feel or see?
With my methods of using the box and making certain the cushion springs are free, I can travel at 30-35 mph with no bulking...

I would expect to see improved economy and more consistent response to the driver's throttle, carburetor adjustment, and spark timing inputs... in short, a smoother, sweeter-running engine. Torsional vibration would likely be reduced in both bandwidth and intensity.

Compressing Radiator Mounting Springs.

So I'm trying to instal the radiator on my 26/7 touring. I have the diagram of how it all goes together and I understand how I can draw up the bolt with the nut compressing the spring in the frame. Then put in a block of wood to hod it. I'm also using the correct 26/7 bolt and spring kit.
My question is how do you compress the top spring? I...

I'll second that Steve. I use very light springs on the alloy hood on my 1912 van. It do not require much clamping force to hold a hood down.

I had a similar problem on my '25. I wanted to use the early design switch that is held together with two screws. When installed correctly in the car, it wouldn't quite reach through the floor. I put in a later design which has four tabs. I'll bet if I tried to bend those tabs they might break off? At any rate I found a NORS switch, which has been...

Zinc scuff plates

My early '26 roadster came with what I believe to be zinc door sill plates. They have some minor damage. I would like to repair what is missing on one of them and fix the crack on the other. Can this be done? Also, what is the best way to restore these sill plates? Glass bead sandblasting or would another method be better?
Last post
Can't help on welding cracks in zinc, as fumes from zinc are very dangerous to your health.
On mine, just left the few bumps and cracks as 'patina'. The repro parts in aluminum don't look good to me at all. So keep your originals original.
Just buffed the surfaces of the plates on the buffing wheel, then a coat of wax, provided a nice sheen that...

Even though the non water pump Model T’s run a “non pressurised” cooling system it is still subjected to pressure
developed by the weight of the Coolant and if present, steam that can’t pass through the overflow quick enough.
It is my understanding that all Radiator Repair Shops pressure test radiators after repair. A serviceable Radiator should...

I actually bought the correct primer control wire but it was too short to work with this installation. The wire that is on it may be home made. Lug nuts on demountable wheels

Does anyone use a mild locktite product on wheel lug nuts. I always check mine before driving, I find one or two slightly loose, less than a 1/8 turn. Just trying to keep things safe. Thanks
Last post
David, I take your point about the thread starting somewhat deeper in the lug nuts. My concern with the A model nuts was that the length of thread in the nuts would not be as long as a T nut, and so it may bottom out on the stud before engaging on the hub centre.
