I am in the process of checking for a knock in my 21 touringI checking both the rods and main I see that the main crank bolts are a square bolt. My question is what is the safest socket to use so as not to strip the head of the bolt> All I have now is a 12 point.
Last post
Do not be fooled into believing the way to release the center main is via the bolt heads. If you look carefully at them, that isn't a drip of oil hanging from a corner, but a bump indicating the direction of the cotter pin hole between the cylinders...the bump goes inward or outward...so that you have straight-on access to install cotterpins on...

Metal Tire Stem Article?

In reading several strings on the various metal valve stems (Schrader, Dill etc.) I noted mention that Larry Smith had submitted articles to both club magazines, but that, at the time, they had not been printed. Were they ever printed? And if so, in which issue of which magazine?
Last post
Larry, the two valve sizes ended in October 1920 when the Ford obsoleted the larger size valve stem. That one was 3-3/8 long x 15/32 diameter (just shy of 1/2 ). The remaining valve stem was exactly 3 long x 13/32 . Just FYI.

Seat covers like the one on the front seat were very popular right after WWII. I haven't seen one of those in decades.
If you slid across one of those covers on a cool, dry day and then touched metal, you'd get a heck of a shock!

Those after market cast iron pistons may or may not be made for a Ford. The SS 174 most likely means Standatd Size. The Ford T standard size is 177 CID. The 0.31 is the over size as has been said. Frist check the cylinders for current size and uneven or taper ware. If the engine doesn't need to be boared, and you don't want to go to 0.30 aluminum...

After some trying last year to get off the left rear wheel without success (using the puller did not show any result) I now followed the hint I read here somewhere and this was driving a short distance with slightly loosened axle shaft nut.
Moving some meters to and fro already did it. Although I did not here a sound of the wheel getting loose on...

Brake and wheel reinstalled, brake on right and left side 'synchronized'.
Linings had to be grinded to lower width but that worked pretty fine.
Bolts have been grinded down and punched to secure.
Wheel is still making noise what should be mainly the felloe - due to the fact that I drive less than 200 miles a year I will leave it for now, and YES...

Fender Body Filler?

Hi So I started stripping the paint on my rear fenders. They seem to have a skim coat of body filler all over 2-3 mm thick. I am not sure why. Suggestions on how to proceed at this point as I've not done this before? Choices include: 1) Laboriously get down to bare metal (it took awhile to do that in the picture shown) and start over. 2) Sand off...
Last post
I would caution against sandblasting panels with a flat profile like early fenders. It is very easy to heat/warp flat panels with blasting. Take your time to strip them by other more gentle means. You may find that much of the filler will need to be replaced!

So I have this dummy delima. On the 9-24 front cam bearing; I have pulled 3 cams and the ends of the bearing seems to be broken. As you roll the cam; the lobe will actually drop in and that is a bad deal. I find it hard to believe that all 3 cams I pulled are the same way. Am I missing something? Thank you IMG_20210625_084035855.jpg...
Last post
As John has posted, the front bearing sets the float of the cam shaft, any more than 4 to 5 thou the cam can knock. Another thing that must be a firm slide fit is the bearing into the block. I like using the late cams on rebuilds as they have a wider front lobe so I use a earlier bearing by keeping the alignment hole in consideration, turn each...

Model T’s were often misidentified ‘sort of’ because of what someone thought they were this or that. I have a 24 Coupe that was misdated at inspection stations as a 25 because they look so much alike. I still have the inspectors receipts.
Other T’s from 17-22 open cars look alike except for some details.
And then there’s the Dr’s Coupe theory!...

Any one familiar with a six cylinder 1922 Coupe

Any one familiar with a six cylinder 1922 Coupe(?) from the Oakland area in California?
Whilst searching newspapers of the period (1922) I found an advertisement that had the sale of a Ford Coupe with a six installed. Factory installation? Scan1922cyl6coupe.jpg

The T pictured appears to be a put-together built around a 6 cylinder T engine. created in the 1920s. The engine block may date from the teens, but not the starter unit. The body is odd and does not look like one that Henry would have built for Edsel. Th top is a make shift .

I have a NOS brush plate that looks like a Model T brush plate but it only has 3 holes for the neutral setting. What's it for?

Could it be off a Fordson tractor? Or a Ford Marine Engine? Or is this another example of an F.A. Liberty generator. the first ones used on early generator cars?

I have taken two generators apart lately that have two bearings in front. The rear bearing acts as a spacer as the shaft shoulder is set back. What's the deal.

Could that be an example of one of the very early Ford Generators? The F.A. Liberty generator, (or whatever it was) before they went to the standard Ford pattern device?

I offered to drive down from Rochester New York to the little village of Scio New York to help their fire company get their model TT running. It’s a great original pumper but the person who used to take care of it died years ago and the responsibility fell to some without enough experience to keep it up. This engine hadn’t run forma few years.

I recently was able to purchase an early Ford artifact and this original photo came with it. The seller told me it was of Henry Ford. The seller admittedly didn’t have much interest in things Ford, and the items were handed down in his family.
I believe it could be Edward “spider” Huff. In the side by side picture, the left one is a known...

Can someone explain to me in a simple format as to how to set up TDC and proper timing position. Thank you. Frank

LOL keeping it simple, I just shine a light in the hole and watch the piston. When it comes up, stops, then starts to go down, I call it good and set my timing. As long as all pistons fire on the down stroke when starting on battery, it really can't kick back. There is more then enough travel on the quadrant to set the timing once it is running,...

Our first start of a 1910 Ford Special racer. We haven't had this on the road since the Milwaukee mile in 2019. I overheated the motor and scored the cylinder walls and needed new aluminum pistons.
Hopefully we'll be ready for the Speedster Reunion in a week and a half. Click on the link to see the first start. I was surprised when it...

Awesome Rob! Thank you sharing the video. I'm close to finish my 1914 Ford racer either. Maybe this week-end he will fire for the second time. Just need to fix the rear axle to the engine.

Seat spring size

Hi,
can someone give me the precise measurements of the front and rear original Ford spring cushions and also for the front and rear backrest springs. What I need is the outer measurments, as I have problems to make the new Snyders upholstery kit parts fit, especially on the front cushion.
Thanks
Last post
I was given the front seat section of a 1919 or 1920 touring. It looked like the upholstery had never been off. The back cushion was hung off the tack rail, there was a piece of upholstery card stock between it and the body, no other support. The bottom cushion is; 17-1/2 X 36-3/4 (44.45 X 93.345 CM). If you need the front seat back rest, I can...

I am taking apart my original wheels. The spokes and felloes are too far gone to reuse. However, the (non demountable clinchers) rims are quite usable with sandblasting and perhaps a bit more work. I have three of the four hubs out (last one is real tight). I'm not sure how to further disassemble. I drilled out the bolts holding the hardware out,...
Last post
Thank you everyone. I managed to solve my issue.
There was an additional rivet through the each half felloe and one spoke on each end. Perhaps evidence of an early repair. I know now what to look for on my other wheels and should be able to do the same disassembly relatively smoothly.

I’m installing the top bows on my 24 Touring for the first time…without any straps or anything tying them together…in preparation for the installation of the straps/pads/top.
I’m finding it to be near impossible to get the bows erected.
Should I tie them together first with some twine that mimics the length of the straps?
