I installed my new Tru Fire system today and have constant backfiring through the carb when trying to crank the car (1914). I had to re-set the timing as it was way too far advanced from the setting with my New Day timer. Once it starts it runs fine and gives repeated free starts, but still backfires when I crank start it. I followed the...

You may only need to dry the box in an oven for an hour or so.
Replacing the wood with all the contacts on with a plastic one is still your lowest cost option.

Chris, I feel for you. We had a similar escape from a rapidly traveling grass/crop/stubble fire heading straight for our farm and the native vegetation sanctuary we have spent years fencing and protecting. The fire was on a 3km front until a 90 degree wind change converted that to a 40km front which ran away from us.

The engine is not running and I suspect it’s both a fuel and spark issue, maybe valves. I hear about three to eight hits and then it dies. Sometimes it runs on three cylinders. When I hand built the cowl tank for my speedster I use only one baffle. It used to drum appreciably as the fuel level dropped< so i kept the tank topped up. Over the course of the summer we've noticed an intermittent faint knock in our 1919 T. I am making some new hubs for my Dayton wheels. I have been reading the old posts on the wire discussing the correct taper and there does not appear to be consensus. The original drawing I saw says the axles use a 1-1/2 inch per foot taper. This works out to a 7.15 included angle. I can cut the taper on the lathe, but you always get some flex on...

Eureka!! Now I understand about zeroing in on the back side! Took me a bit (and some explaining from Scott Conger) to think it through. I have cut tapers before, but this is the first time I have used a male taper to cut a female matching taper. It’s fun to learn something new, especially something that makes things simpler.

Is there any symptoms that would show up before the thrust washers go bad? Or do they just crumble and you’re coasting? I thought last time I had mine out that the left rear hub was warm. Could be parking brake. We’re going to be moving soon, 15 miles away, and I’m wondering about driving it or finding someone to trailer it.
Last post
If you still have babbitt thrust washers I've been told that the differential oil will sometimes show some gray material if you spread a little out on some white plastic or similar material. Likewise, shiny gold specs could indicate bronze bushings. Regardless, if you don't know, you need to find out.

Your point about 1918 Canadian Model T cars having 30” x 3 1/2” non-demountable front wheels is correct, so the Canadian 1918 produced TT trucks would have used them also. I am working on a 1915 look a like model T with an electric starter.
The car came here because it didn't start.
This what I found.
Just wondering:
Can this be an after market starter or is it a home build from other parts?
I will replace it with a fresh rebuild real model T starter. (last photo)

I have two of the LD Becker 12 volt starters. Bought them just after he started making them. They have given excellent service. When he passed away I think one of his sons tried to take over but the quality went down.

For reference: 25 MPH in high is 1,000 RPM.
In low, the engine speed is about 3 times faster. 8 to 10 MPH is about all you can do in Low, and about 45 MPH in High.
A T engine in good shape will handle up to about 1800 RPM, though 1600 is better.
A T engine should operate without severe vibration up to or beyond 40 MPH in High, and about 8 to 10...

Looking for input on an electrical issue. Running on either BAT or MAG, my ammeter is showing 20A charge. Light switch is off and lights not yet connected. Unfortunately, thoughts and opinions could be costly, Ford states which way a rod is to be fitted just like which way a head gasket is to be fitted, imagine how thick a service book would be if going to explain all the science of the engineering, but Ford just kept it simple to have a correct assembled trouble-free engine.Screenshot (319).png...

The door opening on the trailers are several inches narrower than the...

What type of tow vehicle are you using, if not a pickup ? I think that a standard two axel utility trailer will fit the 1926 roadster body ok. You don’t need a car trailer, I have hauled Model A closed car bodies in two axel utility trailers before.

Fifty years after Gettysburg, a reunion was held at Gettysburg. Sources say that there were 50,000 veterans attended. This was 1913, the same year as Tim's car. There were discussions of holding a 60 year reunion, but the thought was that there were too few veterans still living.

This post from 2013 got me looking more closely at the floorboards in my 27 Roadster.
After some inspection I was surprised to find that the upper board (nº 1) is made from not 1 piece but 5 pieces of wood which are dovetailed and the riveted metal pedal slots hold them together. This shows the 4 pieces which are dovetailed to the upper piece....

Ford did not use packing crates, but he probably DID use what is called a Linderman Machine . This takes small pieces of wood, and edges them so they can all be glued together into usable wood boards. The reason I know this is that the Franklin Automobile Co, used a Linderman machine in their production, as I have found it called out several times...

The strip of thin steel rolled into a ring is not the best gland. The split allows them to warp and dislodge when the exhaust heats them. Just cut them off with a chop...
