Just wondering why this difference?

Last post
I didn't think about this, but it's true, the stator coils on an early 09 would be 1/2 wide, where the later ones would be 9/16 ... a pre-2500 T would definitely be within that 1/2 coil width era.

Ford Invoice 1917.png
The car was ordered on Aug. 2, 1917, appears to have been built about August 13, and delivered Sept. 8.
There is a Heiser Ford in the Milwaukee area today, I assume a successor company?
At any rate, a fun read.

The bottom part of the T is there, but faint.
The engine assembly date is Wednesday, August 29, 1917. The car was shipped ten days later. It was made almost a month after Mister Schlitt ordered it. We would call it a 1918 model.

A few months ago, I pulled the engine from my 25 coupe. It's all patched up and ready to go back in now. Here's the question... if I remove the steering column, can I get the engine back in with the hogshead installed and the pedals adjusted and in their normal position? When I pulled it out, the hogshead was off. I'm hoping to do it all in one...

Done plenty both lhd and rhd.
Never a problem with steering column and firewall in place.
But being an aussie we always try to do things without removing stuff that doesnt have to be removed.

Getting it running and getting it ready for road use are two entirely different things. The latter of course will involve getting it running, but so much more is needed than just starting the car to see if it runs.
It may run if you add fluids, oil, water and fuel. With a battery hooked up, you can hand crank it to see if the coils buzz, and then...

Hello,
I wanted to get your advise. On my 27 when the hand brake is in the neutral position the rear brakes are holding. I have lined rear brakes. I assume that they are original brakes that have been lined but I am not certain. With the brake fully forward the cams are level as they should be but with the linings there is not much movement by the...

Achieving precise handbrake adjustment in combination with the clutch and low gear settings can be a real challenge.
Having one piece brake rods adds to the frustration and I’ve often considered adding a flexible cable or similar at one end of the brake rods.
I have cured all of this by using the Clevis Pin that has a sliding element built into...

The spring has 7 leaves.

An 8th leaf and a proper castle nut will take car of at least 3/8 of that extra thread. Then check for the split pin holes. Or, find a correct replacement.

Use a plane and depth check to see if the housing is bent. If it not, race the outer sections of the housing tube with a straight edge, mark, heat and bend back. Never seen a Ruxstell casting bend that much the radius rods could not take up.

Two pieces of sage advice given. Install the frame first to be sure it fits. Cut a masonite template to fit the frame. That way you know it will fit your application.
With body parts, timber kits etc. all need work to get them to fit. They are not precision engineered articles, so the work must be done to make them fit each application.

I used the Sure Stop system. The components are of the highest quality and go together well. Unlike mechanical brakes you don't have to periodically adjust them. Leather strips harden and shrink over time. Cotton webbing will not, but the ends will fray. Modern synthetics will e easy to seal on the end with heat to stop the fraying, but finding an acceptable colour webbing may be a challenge. You have choices.

Where can you find new Model T parts?

Hello. Let's say you need to repair your Model T. Let's say the radiator has sprung a leak or the wheel bearings need to be replaced. Where can you find such parts? Which websites do you recommend you find any new parts for the Model T? Do they still make Model T parts? Thank you
Last post
And to complicate what has been said above, some new is inferior to new old stock, and other new parts are better. Example, SKAT crankshafts. However, some parts which show when you look at the car are not the same, such as Champion spark plugs. The older ones could actually be disassembled for cleaning where the newer ones must either be...

Can you help me identify this steering wheel lock? It says F 96640 on it. It also might also say, in faded leters, RELIABLE.

it ratchets it in one direction and prevents it from spinning in the other.

Not sure who it is in the photograph, but it was likely taken up in one of the the “coal region” towns of central Pennsylvania where part of my family is from.

So how do you like to safety wire you Mag Ring? Also when safety wiring the 4 flywheel bolts do you need to keep the amount of twists at a minimum so you don't have a bunch of wire on one side that will throw off the balance?

As always thanks for the advice.

How much can you safely remove from the mains? Mine currently mics at .020 undersize. It’s a EE crank. I think(hope) it should clean up at .025 under. Is that good or look for another crank. It’s out of a running engine so there is no rust or pitting on any journals. Just a little scoring on the third main.
Tom

If not out of round and a crack test, that crank would polish up just fine for service again.
I agree. Probably looks better than the cranks in my cars right now, (and a bunch of others too).

My friend Hugo Vermuelen phoned yesterday from Canada to let me know that Bob Barrett of Angola, NY passed away on Sunday. Hugo said that he had been working in his shop last Sunday but succumbed to a long illness a week later. Bob was the owner of several Ts: 1909 #1004, an original, unrestored 1911 torpedo, and an original '14 depot hack....

Bob was a most unusual fellow. He'd been suffering from metastatic cancer for years. Despite that, he hosted a great one-and two-cylinder tour fromm Chatauqua, NY, a few years back. He and Jill took their topless 1908 Buick to the Lansing-Dearborn run and the Old Car Festival at least twice - and, when I say took, I mean they drove it to and home...

I chose to title this thread “ Speedster is finally on the road” and not “My Speedster is done” since I don’t think you can ever consider them “done”.
To start off, I have wanted a Speedster for probably over 20 years. A little over 10 years ago this purchase got it all started.

I was changing the rear axle seal on my TT rear axle and noticed quite a bit of axle play when pulling on the axle. I know TT axles are pretty well built and not like a car axle with Babbitt thrust washers. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

As Steven pointed out, a new Ruckstell fiber thrust washer is inexpensive and can easily be sanded to the needed thickness where the differential neither wiggles side to side nor locks up when the casing bolts are drawn down. I secured my fiber washer on a workbench, as shown, making sure the screws were below the washer surface. Then hand sanded...

I think part of the problem with various reports is that people don't realize there were different springs, and many cars have the wrong springs or a mixture of springs. Also, many...

Making metal repairs on a set that suffered abuse. Presently, every piece presents a different angle between top and sides. Specs. Using calipers for such measurements is not usual practice. To accurately measure both pistons and cylinder bores, you need internal and external micrometers. There is no way a bore can be measured with calipers, other than at the deck.

Anyway, I thought Ild better check and make sure it’s not also Model K before I list it as a random wheel for a speedster and it never ends up where it’s supposed to be....

Do they rest on top of the lower frame flange or hang below?
The Model T Service manual is not clear on this point.

There are cotters in the end of the engine pan bolts on the early T's. Don't know the date they were eliminated, but likely in '12?
Here is an award winning early T, you can even see the reflection of that cotter in the gleam of the shiny Ford black finish

Bruce is correct. The 26-7 wide brake drum transmission will fit as long as you use the original narrow band. It has the advantage of being one uninterrupted surface on which the band runs, rather than the worn two piece surface of the narrow brake drum with the outer diameter of the driven plate as part of the braking surface. These two...

You HAVE to bake out the oil- all of it and it does take patience. Back in the days of vapor degreasers and trichlor, it was much easier, as those do a pretty good job of pulling any oil out. Also, the newer tig machines with adjustable duty cycles help a lot as you can set the duty cycle to clean the weld area. Older machines with a set 50-50...
