How do I tell if my engine has been rebuilt?

First post
I purchased my T not long ago and the gentleman stated that the motor was recently rebuilt. I’ve taken the head off and the cylinders walls look recently honed. Pistons are std T.
Do I basically need to strip it down to the block and measure everything to know for sure? How can I tell if new Babbitt was poured?

I have seen many T engines for sale with fresh paint on them and add says rebuilt, most the time if lucky rings and valves if that.

How easy is it to fit a 1917-1920ish 5 piece rear seat tub to a 1924 touring front half?

I'm trying to help a new T owner who recently purchased some sheet metal parts (surface rust but not rusted through -- but without any wood in them) for a touring. But the parts are clearly from at least two different cars. He has a 1924 high cowl front seat section and a 1917-1920s 5 piece rear seat tub. Those parts were not attached -- just laid...
Last post
Well you could ‘sort of’ fit the 5 piece earlier rear section on a 24 Touring front half but it wouldn’t be quite right. Believe I would try to find a 17-20 front half to go with the 17-20 back half. Or find 24 back half to go with the 24 front half.
One more thing to do is if you have the front half of a 24 Touring you could make a 24 cutoff...

Hi, I know couple treads covering that topic in the past. But now in 2020, the reality changes and tires are not the same than previous decades. I hope a U.S. dealer will soon carry the Blockey brand. From what I've seen so far, I think the tread design is not good looking. Perhaps if I was to see one I would change my mind. Next, on the tubes. I wonder if the valve stems are the same exact dimensions as the originals, and if they supply tubes that we can use our original authentic...

Many thanks in advance for your advice ☺️!

The coil fires, but does the plug fire? Do you have a coilbox with original style wood in it? If so, and the coil fires, and the plug fires in the open air but not in the engine, and since the trouble is with #1, what you probably have is a carbon track in the coil box wood. It's allowing some of the current to bleed off to ground (the metal side...

Eric, On a Model T timer wiring harness to ground can be caused by a wire terminal grounding against the timing gear cover. Sometimes a non firing coil (buzzing) can be caused by dirty terminals in the coil box, terminals on the coil or a loose coil, if loose...

Wise move Robert. Just replace a section at the bottom of the rod with anew piece. Grind each end to a blunt point so the weld can penetrate, and file back into round. The job is even more satisfactory if you drill and pin the control arm and fit it first.
Hope this helps,

I noticed some front end wobbling in the past week of driving and thought I’d get a jump on it right away. The sooner the better. I had the afternoon off from work and it was up to 75 this afternoon, so a good time to tinker. After jacking up the front axle I found the king pin bushings on the right side were loose and the ball joint under the pan...

For a good many of us, the experience of driving a century-old car isn't about convenience or reliability. In fact, historical purists see frequently required maintenance and inconvenient breakdowns as part of the game. Other folks are just looking for some reliable fun. Newbie from NC, in my late, late 50's. Been a vintage Honda Motorcycle guy for a few years so I'm moderately metrically mechanical. I'm about to be thrust into the caretaker's role of my Aunt's 26 (I think) Speedster. My uncle passed in '08 so the last time it ran was before then. I picked up a '13 block for my '13 Canadian touring project recently. When I took the valve covers off to inspect it I noticed that something appears to be missing inside. See if you can spot what's not present.
And has anyone else run across this missing step in the engine manufacture before.

I am now thinking about side curtains on the 23 runabout. I’m confused about how they are fastened. My assumption is that the fronts are secured to the windshield bracket and posts with flat hooks. By the way, the bag that the vendors sell to store the side curtains when they aren't being used isn't correct either. Here is an older thread about the configuration of the current vendor roll versus an original Ford curtain roll:

Here's a tip:
If you make your own top boot, use top material, not upholstery material.
Upholstery material stretches which doesn't make for a good boot.
Top material does not stretch. Factory boots were made from top material.

20200918_210422.jpg Just brought this Touring home. Awakened this devil after a twenty year nap. Has cast pistons, original interior, 15 hood. Had to drill drain holes in valve galleys, about a quart of oil was trapped in them. Fan belt was like a potato chip. Would Brassworks rebuild the radiator?

Brassworks used to do resto work, but I don't know either anymore. Call em!

I refreshed a mid-twenty’s model t transmission by inspecting for drum cracks, new Kevlar bands, new band springs, and adjusting for neutral with new hardware. The clutch fingers set screws are all the way forward. I left them as I found them when I took the engine out of the chassis.
The high speed is engaged when I try to start the engine. I...

So a month ago George started running a little rough. At first I thought it was a spark problem as shorting #1 had zero effect. Hours down that path proved useless, so I just kept driving and Trying to adjust the mixture on the carb to no avail.
Then Last Tuesday I took a drive to get a flu shot and the motor started backfiring on decelerations....

Well that settles it Dan... I’m gonna have to purge a few less important memories (birthdays, phone numbers, wife’s name) as they seem to be pushing out the important ones 😉

For what it's worth, I have solved a problem that I have experienced several times during a lifetime of Model T and Model A ownership. Not sure how many others have had similar experiences , but I have had several instances whereby partial tankfuls of gasoline have COMPLETELY evaporated when a car was inadvertently left unused for a whole season...
Last post
My first thought is if it actually evaporated out of the tank it would be a lacquered up mess. Both tank and carb. IMHO.

Let me say this first. My wife and I are not hurt. My wife is sore from the crash but seems OK. This week while on tour, I messed up. I bought a new wiring harness for my rusty old '20. Needless to say is stood out loudly compared to the overall rust brown color of everything on the car. When removing the engine I hung it on the fence. Forgetting about it, it sat outside in the weather for a few months of rain and sun. Now it is a perfect match for the weathered old car. :-)

Not a Westchester 7. They were clearly marked on top and have a different font. Also, the hinged at the top door is different than the Westchester.

I can’t speak on Model T s as daily drivers in the 1940s as I came along in 1950. But I became interested in and aware of Model T s in 1952. In late elementary school and junior high I knew of a 1926 roadster and 1919 centerdoor as daily drivers by elderly people in New Braunfels TX. I’ve been the proud second owner of both for decades...😁

Can anyone tell me the bolt size / thread sizes of the wishbone ball cap bolt (stud)? I can't find this info searching here, or the web, or my various manuals and catalogs. I've attached a picture from one of the vendors just to be clear about the part I'm referring to.
I'm particularly interested in knowing the thread specs...

I helped my Dad restore his father's 1927 Model T coupe starting in the mid 1960's, so I'm not new to Model T's, but I have never given this question any thought.

Methinks that the above post is theoretically correct, but is way overthinking the issue. Our roads here in SW Florida are built with a significant crown - 3 inch downpours are not rare here. My T does not pull and I have not noticed any significant tire wear other then what would be attributed to normal driving. It would seem to me that the...

If the high tension winding is open it will need to be replaced. The T-4238 coil generally shows resistance in the 2500-2800 ohms range. The pine rosin originally used to pot these units can be carefully removed with an old screwdriver or chisel (don't use a hammer) enough to get the new thin style condenser (the one Lang's sells) in, but...

If you live near Eugene, Oregon and have a pick up truck and/or a trailer and are available this week ...
There are (3) engines with attached transmissions that need to be picked up - then broken down so the engines/transmissions are separated.
There is a forklift to load.
Call or text me if you are interested
Thanks !
FreighTer Jim...

There are two V-8 engines and one V-12 engine.
They are on stands.
This is for one of the museums that I transport for.
I am returning thru the Eugene area this weekend
and can help load them - break them down - unload
them.
The plan is to get them off the stands and separate each engine from the transmission so I can transport them.
Thanks...
