REEDER HC head engine knock

First post
Hello Everybody!! I have a Reeder aluminum high compression head on my '23 Touring that is prone to engine knock. I only use 91 octane gas and keep the ignition as retarded as much as possible to avoid the knock. Recently it seems the knock is becoming more prevalent and louder. Is it possible carbon build up in the chambers could be the cause? If...
Last post
Depends on what your call a knock. A spark knock sounds like a Ping and will change with the position of the spark lever. A dull thud would be caused be something like a piston hitting the head or a piston loose in the cylinder or possibly a loose main bearing. This type knock is also more noticeable when under power such as rapid acceleration or...

So I got my truck together for the first time ever and I've been driving it around the yard. I can't get plates for it until I get the lights working and find a horn for it. It seem to run smoother on battery (6V) than on mag. When I switch over it changes the sound of the motor, and it seems to be running on all cylinders on both but just seems...

The above is all good. You might also check the magneto output.
You need an AC voltmeter - analogue is better for this check. You should get about 5v at idle, rising to over 30v at high rpm.
(a simpler check is to connect a turn or brake light 12v 21W bulb; it should get VERY bright or blow when you rev up)
Less than 15v max would make an in-car...

Whenever I can find them, I like to have some good rims in my swap meet stocks. I have good ones sand blasted and electro zinc plated so that they are ready to go. I have two excellent heavy gauge rims available at the moment, but they are not T model rims. They gave a collar around the valve stem hole, which I presume fits into a ferrule in the...

Thanks Dan and Steve,
They are standard T width. I was aware of the wider Chev rims, but thought they all had fixed lugs. On closer inspection, these were held on the felloe with 5 wedging type lugs. I believe accessory Firestone demountable heels were 5 lugged. Photos on the forum of Firestone rims show a collar around the valve stem hole to be a...

I am going through my trans, rebuilding what I can afford, on the way. The low speed drum isn't cracked but is worn a bit in the middle. Should I attempt to have it leveled out? Not sure how, economically... Mechanics that then brake drums are few and far between... But those are in the inside of the drum surface, not the outside. I am putting on...
Last post
I personally wouldn't be worried that the drum is worn more in the middle because the band will wear in to the drum. I'd be more concerned if the surface of the drum still runs concentric to the shaft. If not the band will jerk and jar the car when you take off which can be unpleasant at the least and eventually damage other parts of the car. I...

Last post
Describing any model T horn as having a cover over the motor is most confusing, given that the EA Labs horn mentioned earlier is a horn with a true electric motor.
In my experience with our Canadian sourced cars, the easy way to distinguish a T model battery horn from any of the earlier magneto variants is to check the back cover. It alone is...

I'll be honest....I've never liked the looks of the spare carrier that came on black era Touring cars. It hangs low, at a weird angle. It looks like an afterthought by Ford.

I have a 26 touring that has a noise coming from the water outlet, worst where the fan pulley bolts on. It make the noise worse when you put the pulley back on(no fan and a ball bearing pulley) but it still makes the noise without the pulley, the rest of the engine sound like a sewing machine. It has had this noise for a while but where it is...

This is waaaay outside the box, but maybe there is actually something inside the water outlet making the noise. For instance, someone could have put a thermostat in there, and its flapper has gotten loose and is waving around. Or, maybe some kind of piece of something has migrated there. The only way to make sure is to take it off, which will cost...

We also used to have various local clubs in Denmark. A nationwide, F.D.M., was formed also in 1909 and it still exist. It did have badges, but today the most sought relique is there radiator ornaments, which came in several sizes for motorcycles over Model Ts to Auburn, Lincolns and Rolls-Royces.

Frankie Drake Mysteries is an TV detective series set in the 1920's.
It airs on CBC - a Canadian TV network.
Many of the outdoor scenes with motor cars use Model T's exclusively.

Ok, so I installed an old flasher control to two 3 cp lights in the rear in beehive accessory lights, and two 21 cp bulbs in the Ford side lights. It worked great forma couple of weeks and then the #585 relay fried. I installed another #585 unit (NAPA) and it was too fast so I removed the cover and adjusted the tension of the bimetal spring. Mark,
I have been running this LL535 electromechanical 6 volt flasher for my turn signals and it has a nice steady flash rate even though it lives right next to the coil box. It has been working fine for over 5 years with 6CP front and 21CP rear incandescent bulbs, and flashes the same whether the engine is running or not.
Best regards.

I can’t see the detail on the wiring of the ten bolts for the ring gear, but Lee Pierce taught me to wire them in pairs. So bolts are wired in pairs. The three bolts on the differential can be split pinned but those using three studs should be wired together.

I have watched a number of videos of coil restoration, and they show how the coils are adjusted using several different testing devices. Back in the day , how did the typical Model T owner keep the coils adjusted without having these devices?
Last post
Actually, if you really know what you’re doing and know what a correctly set coil sounds like, then you could have very good success getting them real close If you set them by ear while running on magneto at a very low idle. There is a distinctive “clack” right around the sweet spot on most coils.

I recently chased and finally caught the remains of a 1913 Canadian Model T touring. This was a nearly complete car about 30+ years ago, but the previous owner took it apart for restoration and it had ended up apart for decades and is a mixture of rough parts and some new parts and a lot of bits and pieces are missing.
The parts...

Hi Wayne
I have a copy of the latest guidelines and it does include several notes on the Canadian built Ts. But the Canadian part is still a work in progress. I sent in a list of several suggested revisions recently for the Canadian '13 to '16 section based on a combination of collected information (much thanks to this forum too), plus my own...

Hello
Does anyone know the center distance of the two 5/8 holes for adjusting seat position, in the wood seat frame (frame seat spring sits on) for a 1927 Coupe?
In addition, does anyone know if the seat spring is fastened to the wood frame, if so how?
Thank you
Joe

I need to know how far the top bows extend above the sockets for a Roadster. I did a google search for the info I need but didn't come up with anything concrete. There is a drawing which has been posted many times which gives the total length for the socket plus bow (32-7/8 ) for the middle bow, but not the front or rear ones. Does anyone have...

Mike,
Thanks so much! Following the dimension that John Regan shared sounds like a good way to go. (Disclaimer -- if someone is really tall -- or tall in seating height -- they may want to add a little extra room....) Being height challenged, I don't have to worry about that but both of my son-in-laws are tall guys.
Again great looking work and...

Model T prices down?

A decent 1926 roadster pickup just sold for $21,175 on an online auction in Wi. Wood wheels, no options, older restoration. Whoda thunk it. We might have a goldmine.

Occasionally I see T's that sell for what I think is a crazy price. Who doesn't like to make money? But if prices reach the level of a 1969 GTO, I won't spend that kind of money on a toy I don't need. Model T prices are like the car and the people who drive them. Stable, reliable, and down to earth. I am happy for that and I hope it stays that...

Anyone have a set of Leon Parker’s wood plan sets lying around? There is NO old wood in my current project, I know the body mounting wood is available, but I also know there’s wood in and around the door frames, seats and so on...I’m bookmarking every forum post I can find with at least a picture or so..

Dan, you're right about the exhaust heat being intense for a wood piece to be just above the muffler. My car's trunk floor has been plywood for the past 60 years and given the shipping cost and import duty to Spain, it's going to remain that way for some time. Fortunately the exhaust heat hasn't done any injustice to it.

Thanks,

My car should be all black. A previous owner plated the headlights, shroud, and side lights. 1920 - wanted it to look like a brass car.
Wondering about that, but still looks neat....
I believe the original lacing wrapped around and tucked between the shroud and the lacing on the loop above it.
Sounds like a plan....

Hello MTFCA.
Is there a way to test the functionality of a coil box (with four rebuilt coils) and switch outside of the car?
I have a wood coil box that was built a few years ago that I plan to use for my 1910 project. However, I am not sure that switch and the contacts inside the box are up to par. Is there a way to test the box and switch to...

Darin, I would not use the wings on the motometer. I had the experience with wings on a new brassworks radiator that I believe caused the solder joints to crack on the filler neck twice. How do you know when to take up the slack in your connecting rod caps and remove a shim(s)? Is it a mileage thing? Do you wait to hear a knocking?

You can confirm your engine number with the casting date on the motor... also depending on your body (Beaudette or Ford, maybe Fisher) the body number will incorporate the month and year of the body.

Question for our paint experts

I know the paint code for 1927 gunmetal blue for PPG is IM436 and Dupont is DS151. I am having trouble with my paint store as they dont have a formula for PPG (DBC, OMNI or OMNI PLUS) to be able to mix it. Does anyone have information on these formulas?
Any help is much appreciated.

Incredible Museum, family-owned, open only 4 years, the owner was working on the floor, very friendly and willing stop to talk. Amazing collection. A must stop if you are in the area. Like Frank posted, the best wax contains Carnauba wax.
For years have used Beats-Um-All. You can't find it at stores, sometimes at car shows, but you can find on-line dealers or the mfg. for direct order. Isn't cheap, but is pure Carnauba wax. Works on all finishes. Leaves no white residue.

I'm not a big fan of those red hoses Lang's and the like sell. It does not have to be original. I drive my t s ALOT. Thanks, bobt

This is topic-drift. The ribs that seal to hoses on my inlet and outlet were also pitted. I filled the rib pits with JB weld and smoothed them before assembly. There are no leaks and I expect that hoses will come off easily when needed.
