Previously Owned Cars From Collectors

Has anyone other than myself ever purchased a car from a collector, where it is obvious one or more collectors have kept some of the parts from the car, or at least replaced some parts from another vehicle that are not original to the car?

More than that, through fifty-plus years close to the hobby, i mourn the number of complete and interesting cars that were scattered in misguided restoration attempts, never to be made whole again.

I would like to hear from our Canadian members about the 88 rims carriers. I think 88 rims were used more up there than in the States.
Although, I did get 4 NOS 88 rims out of a Ford dealership in TN that closed in 29.
How about some input from the “ Great White North”? Thanks Dan

I don’t think this has changed. Most of us are as proud of our old autos today, as dad, grandad and great grandad were back when they were new. I love these period badges showing auto club affiliations. They are extra special when you find one with a special affiliation to where you live, or lived. D624E868-5C21-47A8-8001-8894C7836164.jpeg

We also used to have various local clubs in Denmark. A nationwide, F.D.M., was formed also in 1909 and it still exist. It did have badges, but today the most sought relique is there radiator ornaments, which came in several sizes for motorcycles over Model Ts to Auburn, Lincolns and Rolls-Royces.

One old timers trick if the hub or axle taper is a little worn. Move the gear on the end...

Hi All
I recently picked up a mixed bag of parts that included what is supposed to be a late 13 frame. The mounting of the rear cross member is odd compared to what I am used to. The back end of the side rails have a rough cut opening for the cross member to slide in and be attached. The area where the top of the side rails overlaps the cross...

Jeff, those are the earlier stampings. The forge flash is clearly seen on the sides at the frame end. On the later irons that flash runs top and bottom on the irons. Thanks for the photos.

I have seen some discussion on this topic but no real conclusions.
Plastic seems to have some advantage over wood in that is won’t swell and should slide in and out of coil boxes easier.

I have watched a number of videos of coil restoration, and they show how the coils are adjusted using several different testing devices. Back in the day , how did the typical Model T owner keep the coils adjusted without having these devices?
Last post
Actually, if you really know what you’re doing and know what a correctly set coil sounds like, then you could have very good success getting them real close If you set them by ear while running on magneto at a very low idle. There is a distinctive “clack” right around the sweet spot on most coils.

Like Frank posted, the best wax contains Carnauba wax.
For years have used Beats-Um-All. You can't find it at stores, sometimes at car shows, but you can find on-line dealers or the mfg. for direct order. Isn't cheap, but is pure Carnauba wax. Works on all finishes. Leaves no white residue.
Just used it on this NOS aftermarket tail lamp. The...

Hi, I am about to put my differential back together, trying for this weekend. Unfortunately I only have 4 studs (1 is chewed up so really 3) and 1 good bolt. I need either 2 bolts or 2 studs. These look uniquely tapered/specialized and are at least a week away if I order from Lang's. I am going to see what I can find in Houston and/or if any Space...

VW 009 Distributor Parts

Is there still a source for VW 009 distributor shaft bushings and a few other small parts?
The shaft bushings seems to wear the most and is the most difficult to find.

Does anybody know where I can buy radiator hose for my 1926 model t roadster without ordering it from a model t parts supplier? Part numbers? Tractor supply? Agra supply? NAPA? I'm not a big fan of those red hoses Lang's and the like sell. It does not have to be original. I drive my t s ALOT. Thanks, bobt

This is topic-drift. The ribs that seal to hoses on my inlet and outlet were also pitted. I filled the rib pits with JB weld and smoothed them before assembly. There are no leaks and I expect that hoses will come off easily when needed.

I ran across this photo taken in 1920. Besides being a great period photo, I noticed that this car has an unusual steering wheel. It looks like it might have a lock and key in the front. Does anyone know for sure?

A period battery charger AC to DC

To produce a period magneto battery charger consider this.
Dykes motor manual mentions a Warner battery charger for the Model T. The Warner system uses a wet RECTIFIER to convert AC from the Magneto to DC to charge the battery. The device would either be mounted on the outside running board, of if you had a coupe/roadster it could be inside the...

In my youth I made a number of transformers for custom applications. Mostly for converting old battery radios to run of 110. The A voltage (1.5 volts) for the filaments, the B voltage (90 volts) for the main power and in some cases the C voltage of I think about 9 volts. The A was ok as AC. The B of course had to be filtered DC. Also the C. The C...

I swear that at the end of my life, should my Maker decide to send me to that warmer place, I will spend all eternity seeking the Ford engineer who aligned the Bendix cover screws with the transmission pedal linkage for surely he occupies the darkest corner of that place.
Last post
The fact that these screws are #14-24 usually means they are the original ones and quite often the slot is pretty worn out. A tinkering tip I have used before is the toilet bowl wax ring I have on the work bench. Just put a wad of wax on the end of the screw and it will hold right on...Wax ring is great to lube the springs, threads, oil lamp...

Has anyone used one of the carburetor cleaner fuel additives in their T? My Holley NH is acting like it needs a little freshening so before I order a rebuild kit I was wondering if this might help. Thanks!!

I'm wondering why anyone would want to try a chemical cleaning trick on a Model T carb. Assuming it's an NH there are only a few sources of problems, none of which can be properly repaired with carb cleaner . Possible problems in order of probability include: leaking needle/seat, improperly adjusted float, worn or notched mixture needle, worn...

Hello Ladies and Gents.
I’m just in the process of setting up a Generator on a standard 6V. Model T.
I only thought it was the third brush that required setting and planned to set it to about 8 Amps. I have now been told that prior
to adjusting the third brush, you should rotate the complete brush holder (after loosening the 4 screws) and set it...

Hello Gents.
Thought I would let you know the outcome of Dad’s Generator in his 1927 T
Your tips were spot on. I used the 6V Battery from another T, found and set the Null Point, fitted a John Regan
6V Voltage Regulator and once back on the vehicle rotated the 3rd Brush until we had 8 Amps. The charge rate dropped down
even lower after 10...

Start the job by fully restoring your hubs and fellows, and assembling the wheel. Begin painting the wood by removing all dust with a good tack cloth. Use a good quality outdoor wood primer. I like and...

I have searched but did not find anything that looked like this carrier. A 30 rim fits it nicely. I want to use it on my '17 roadster. Can't quite see how it mounts. Appears it should bolt to the frame but matching frame holes are not there. Was this an accessory that required drilling holes in the frame to use?
Last post
I have a 1919 Roadster and finally used the later 30x3 1/2 carrier on it. That was several years ago and at the time I found out with the forum it was a 1 year only for 1919 and over time it was used on other later T’s. Or so it seems that’s where the confusion began or so I read.
I used the later version since I couldn’t find the “supposedly”...

I had the bright idea to rinse the old filter oil from the foam element using lacquer thinner. That seemed to work, but gone with the old oil was the original size of the filter and virtually all integrity of shape. Oops.

I'm late getting back to this thread, but thanks to all who responded.
The immediate need has passed — after the lacquer thinner evaporated, my filter element returned to its original size and shape. Said element is now re-oiled and back in place.
On the less-urgent hunt now for unobtrusive replacement options...

If it was the ad I am thinking of, those were not Bennett brakes, the pedal and equalizer is. They will not be a bolt on and go. They may have used a larger drum like the rocky mtn small drums do. Neat brakes, but may take some engineering to mount them.
He was last on line on the 24th.
