Stromberg OF: running lean

First post
I'm finally getting back into my '27 touring project and wondering if someone can help me with a confusing Stromberg OF issue.
First, let me say that I'm familiar with the OF adjustments as my Dad has an OF on his '26 Roadster since I was a toddler. Let's just say that was many moons ago?!?!
Second, I should set a baseline letting you know...
Last post
I ran an OF on my 23 runabout for a year and the only problem I had was the counterweighted needle that rides on the top of the brass float would get stuck on occasion and caused the fuel to dump on occasion. The top of the brass float had some dings in it. Couldn’t find a better float and I installed a U&J ... been that way ever since.

Didn’t no that about the magnet bolts and whether to wire them or not. I had to think twice about it after seeing this post. The last T I restored was my 21 Touring. I found a correct engine for that year at Chickasha and rebuilt it. It had the magneto bolt wires on and I rewired them after the transmission rebuild.

Thank you, Keith, I appreciate the reply! I kinda thought the shield had to attach to the floorboard as there is no where else it could possibly go, since the four screw holes are at the bottom. Makes sense now that I see what it's supposed to look like!

In actuality there’s 2 styles of this bracket in the last 2 years of T production. The rarest only fits the 4 door and chassis. The other style fits all the other body styles of 26-27. Just a tidbit I’ve learned from this Forum

I'm not very good with carburetors so I don't really know where to start. I have a Simmons Super Power.

Removal consisted of disconnecting the fuel line and...

If the engine is hard to turn over in neutral, I would suspect a problem with the clutch. If you put the parking lever in the neutral position, and push the car it should roll with some effort but the engine not turn. Likewise when you turn the crank, the engine should turn but the car would not roll.
The other possible and more likely cause...

What may discharge your magnets is if DC current from the battery is allowed to flow into the field coil. Whether the engine is running or not. This can be caused by a wiring fault, improperly connected wiring, poorly insulated wire harness ends touching each other on the ignition switch, or something as simple as removing the ignition switch back...

If you look at a removable band you will see that the end of the band is clipped into the ear which in turn makes it the same as a riveted ear.

I keep hearing the Model T Ford loves to cruise at 35 mph, and 45 is abusing the engine. Most people recommend only going up to 35, but WHY? Don't give me it's unsafe, I already know about that. But internally, engine-wise, what happens? What get damaged, worn faster?
Last post
This question comes up fairly often. Beyond the general suggestions guys have already given, the best thing I can say is to drive your car for a while and let it tell you where it's happy. Every T is a little different, and if you're mechanically inclined, you just get a sense after a while. I wish I could say 38mph on level asphalt but there too...

I know I'm stirring the hornets nest, but I have a legitimate oil question.

I seem to recall a passing comment that synthetic can cause transmission bands to not catch. Is there...

Just my opinion... Starting out on a drive it seems like you have no problem with your bands applying as you adjusted... As the engine warms up, metal will expand a bit possibly causing the effect of loosening up your band contact on the drum...????

In this case, if the condition of the rear end was unknown and I planned on driving it, it would get torn down to check the bearnings and thrust washers. With this approach, the condition of the current lubricant becomes moot.

If at all possible don’t throw them away. What’s welded on can be taken off easy enough and they can be cleaned up OK. Lots of old parts have been saved and cleaned up. I enjoy collecting and studying Model T engine blocks and seeing if I can find something interesting. It is especially fun when I discover one that is different from the normal expectations. I recently found and bought this 1916 block and I thought I'd share the find. At first glance you might be wondering what makes this block special - I didn't...

Radiator Installation Tips And Tricks?

As I approach the completion of the reinstallation of the engine in my 23(ish) Touring one of the last obstacles is the radiator.
Removing the hoses was a HUGE pain, so much so that I just cut them off.
Now that I'm about to install my freshly cleaned and sealed radiator I'd like to ask:
1. Is there a right way to do this? any tips to minimize...
Last post
I use a dab of silicone sealant on the hose connections. It fills any imperfections and will let the hoses pop right off as they don't stick to it. Works for me. :) Dave

I'm hoping for some feed back on designing a single axle trailer for hauling my model T's. I know all the pro's & con's of single axle verses tandem. I have a nice18'tandem dovetail but it weighs almost twice what a T weighs and is a pain to park. Most of the tailermade trailers are built on a 60%40% axle spacing that seems to place alot of tongue...
Last post
Mack, I'll have to agree with you. Although I haven't seen this setup in person, it looks to me that there will be a LOT of twisting type of stress on those components without an axle. Myself, I can't see any advantage there, other than lightening your wallet. Maybe I'm missing something, which is QUITE possible! :) Dave

Back of body sitting crooked

by
Rosenfelder » Fri Jul 17, 2020 10:44 pm
First post
I finally got the driveshaft and differential fixed (I think). When I lowered the body on to the rear spring, It was very hard to see if the spring center bolt went into the hole in the frame cross member. Now one side of the body ('27 touring) sits a couple inches higher than the other. Question: How do you get the body centered on the spring?...
Last post
If springs don't seat in the crossmember correctly, I wouldn't grind the springs to fit. That's just asking for a broken spring later on down the road. Find out what the issue is with the croomember, and fix that! JMHO Dave

Hello Guys.
Today we watched a very good show on the History Channel about Henry Ford. Some footage I haven’t seen before

Have found out that it’s the Michigan building opened in 1926.
The address will sound familiar being 220 Bagley Avenue. Henry & Clara’s Home
and where the Quadricycle and Kitchen Bench Engine were built.
It really is the home of the Ford Motor Car!

I was hit by a distracted driver a few weeks ago and thought I'd write a few words on the progress in getting this car back on the road. The insurance co totalled the car as the repair estimate I provided exceeded the $10,000 agreed coverage. They gave me a non-negotiable salvage buyback of $2800 which I accepted knowing I could do the chassis...
Last post
Thanks and glad to hear that Richard! When I looked at the original pictures of the damage I thought maybe just maybe the hit was outside the frame enough that it might have been okay. I have seen quite a few decent looking model Ts found to have bad frames over the years. If it all lines up okay, measures okay, then runs and drives like it...

A friend of mine has a 1927 TuDor. He has wood spokes with 21 inch rims. He needs to replace those rims with better ones. Are they all interchangeable? Or are they like clinchers - Hayes, Kelsey, Ford, etc? What might be a good source for him to get replacements? We are in Milwaukee.

After posting a few want adds and buying some not so good rims, I am having 5 new ones made by Stephen Hood in New Zealand. They should be ready in about 1 more week.

Any suggestions on the best choice of spark plugs for the Model B Rajo head. Thread is for 1/2 pipe but I can use 14mm adapters. What would be the best choice of plugs? Running a DU4 magneto, where should the plugs be gapped? Did a search on the topic but didn't find anything definitive. Thanks

Just fyi. I've been running Champion X plugs in my B Rajo for 52 years. On the road and on the race track. FU 4 magneto. Always set them at 0.25 and I've been totally satisfied with the performance.

Seeing all the differences in how far the screws are, you really need to start with a good base line and go from there. Sure it may take a few tries to get a good clutch, but you will end up with an evenly adjust set of fingers and even pressure on the clutch ring. Because of the single slot, they will not be exactly 13/16 to start but close.
