TT Solid Tire Felloe Repair

So, I picked up my newly repaired TT wheel today.
Long story short, it took a little longer than I thought it would as my original Amish wheel guy had a death in the family and then he ended up selling the wheel company to another Amish guy. Once I got the call from the new Amish guy, I went over to pick it up and I couldn't have been happier....

Big thanks to Chaffins Garage for all the precision parts it took to completely rebuild a large drum Ruckstell. Simply love it. Quite, smooth, and handy.
Had many Ts, this is my first Ruckstell. Made my T into a completely different animal.

I have rebuilt several Ruckstells using new parts here and there as needed. A couple of years ago, one of my customers asked me to install a Ruckstell in his car which had a stock rear end. Anyone have experience refinishing or sealing the Fordite steering wheel rims, used in 1926/27?
I understand Fordite was molded of wood chips, probably some soy materials, some rubber, and some other fillers. I also understand they give you black hands if they are not sealed, due to the material rubbing off.
Anyone had success with refinishing...

Wet sand with 800 grit, then 1000 or 1200 grit if you want a smoother finish. Rinse with water and wipe dry with clean paper towels. Don’t treat, seal, or paint with anything. A T steering wheel should never be cleaned with anything but plain water. If it gets sticky or makes your hands black, then it needs to be wiped down with clean wet paper...

Guys: I am looking to make some special bushings for piston pins also know as wrist pins. What kind of bronze is best to use? What I found on an other forum talked about a CA954 or C95400. They are same thing. Any input would be nice. How does it machine would be helpful too.
No these can not be store brought bushings. Thanks Dan
Last post
CDA954 is aluminum bronze and is probably overkill for anything but the most severe pin bushing application. It would help to know what the piston material is that you need these bushing for. The Ford cast iron pin bushings are probably something close to phosphor bronze.

I want to have some runningboard boxes made and cover them with black covers that snap on. I think the original ones were covered in Fabrokoid. This is that black faux leather stuff that you have all probably seen on trunks etc that is usually shrunken and cracked.
I suppose the closest modern material would just be long grain top material?

Here are some images of the material. By the way Fabrikoid was a nitrocellulose material which is highly flammable.

So I dove into an engine/transmission I recently brought home. I found cylinders 1, 3, and 4 have no Babbitt left at the rod caps, resulting in a lot of play. The inside if the block is glistening with silver flakes.... The caps are all cotter pinned, so i dont think someone slapped an engine together with unserviceable parts.
The mains are tight...

when I say no babbitt, I mean just a very thin skim left. the amount of play is tremendous.

Don’t forget, the model T transmission is either in gear or not. It is not a slide transmission like on the modern cars. The pedal has to be either all the way out or all the way in. If you have the pedal partially down and act like with modern sincro transmissions too much you could do damage. It is a matter of habit that you acquire driving a T....

I was attempting to install the universal joint on the drive shaft. The pins I have are 1 11/32 and the universal joint is 1 3/8 , so they are too short to peen them. Is my universal joint too wide or are the pins too short? What length should they be?

The keyway locks it to the cam shaft. I bought mine new 50+ years ago. It came with a pin with a large head to fit the keyway. I modified mine to eliminate the auto advance and added a tab to the body to use my regular advance and made a reversing lever similar to the Bosch front plate.

A good place to start on testing your mag is with a ohm meter. Check for connectivity between the mag post and the frame of the engine. You should have a small resistance. If you have connection then verify at the ignition switch as well

I have used a pipe clamp & vise to straighten things out. Leaves no marks and a long bar gives you plenty of leverage to move things as much or as little as you go.

Does anyone have experience pro or con with the new production 12 volt geared starter that some vendors carry?

My model A ring gear was starting to move forward. I did not feel like taking the engine out to fix it so I tapped the ring gear back and installed a gear drive starter. Since it engages from the front the ring gear can not move.
I have used it for a couple of years and it works great but it sure does not look like an antique starter.
