I had a flat my21 touring. In trying to break the bead I tried using c clamps hammer also made a lever fulcum against the shop wall all to no avail. I finally took it to a tire shop and they used their hydraulic bead breaker. My question is, is there a method one can use at home to break the bead?

I tried perry Kate suggestion on using a shop vise on another tire for breaking the bead and it worked great. Thanks perry

Q #1: I have seen the bolt holding the low pedal's support facing both directions on various hogsheads: bolt head inside, bolt head outside. I can't really see from photos or manuals which way the bolt is SUPPOSED to face, as the castle nut or bolt head are buried deep beneath the clutch pedal is photos. My gut feel for all things Ford is that the...

I tried the Permatex soaked felt on my 16 a few years ago and failed miserably. Then I followed Royce Peterson's advice and put a 1/4 bead of black Permatex on the block where it meets the hogshead instead of using the felt, worked perfect.

I'm re-upholstering my 1917 Touring. The tack strips that run around the top edge of the seats on the outside of the sheetmetal have seen better days. Fordwood advertises a synthetic, moldable replacement. Has anyone had any experience with them? Can you suggest an alternative?

Being a former restorer of wooden boats I'm well versed in treating wood rot. With wooden members that are rotted but still in place I very successfully used a product called GIT-ROT . It's a 2 part epoxy of thin viscosity which soaks into the wood and then hardens in 4-5 hours. The rotten wood is like a sponge so the thin motor oil like...

Mark, if an axle breaks, you just need time to pull up before the wheel parts company. That can be achieved simply by using a centre punch to dump some of the spiggot into the machined rounded edge of the bearing centre. It only needs a little to be effective. It will then need to be pressed off if the occasion arises for any reason.

It bubbles and spurts and finally stabilizes way down in the radiator.
I can still see water and the radiator is cooling.

The head runs about 200 degrees.
Do I have a problem?

I have a brand new radiator from Bergs. It is not brass. If you look inside the fluid level is only about a 1/2 inch above the metal plate that you can see inside. If I try to add more fluid it just boils out. My other T is about the same. They reach their own level.

I am replacing a top on a 1920 touring. The kit talks about placing the back straps from the car to the last bow. The car did not have the straps previously so I was wondering if someone could tell me exactly where to attach the straps? I know that it is the rear bow and back of car but is there a particular place along the back of the car and the...

My radiator shell does not fit my new radiator. ??

I bought a new radiator since my old one was not repairable. Much to my dismay, the radiator shell on my '26 does not fit over the new radiator. The hole in the shell is too far forward or the radiator neck is too far back. These are photos of my new and old rads. The neck on the new one is 1/2 back from the face of the rad. The old one is about...

I received a call yesterday and stopped and measured. The radius of a neck to the front panel measured 9/16 . You would typically not measure this way but that is immaterial. The dimension is not a number I readily know because we use an OE shell (as a fixture) to locate the neck. If you have a shell with a different neck hole placement that would...

What do you use to take off old varnish. or lacquer or whatever coating they put on brass lamps after they polish them.
I accidentally tried polishing older brass with a wire wheel brush and took off the shinny coating. Now I have to do the whole thing.
Thank you in advanced. Bob
Last post
I soaked these in hot water over a period of several days. Then used a piece of wood and a finger nail to peal off lacquer coating.
It took awhile but the results was worth the effort.

My Dad had told me that story many times when I was growing up. So, one day, a few decades back, I stumbled into an article, believe it or not, on this very subject. Starter sealed bearing parts number?

First post
Anyone have the number for the sealed bearing used to replace the babbitt at the brush end of the starter? I can length the length of the spacer when I have bearing in hand. Looks like maybe 32mm X 13mm X 10mm bearing? In inches I am coming up with; 1.260 X .490 X .3675.
Last post
Mark
The length of the spacer may need minor adjustment. The brush cap is a deep drawn steel stamping and they are not all exactly the same depth. The critical issue is that the brush holders do not contact the sides of the commutator when the starter is assembled and turning.
It also depends upon how much other work has been done and how to the...

Model T related, in a way

I have a great car collection,
From very large to very small,
From Henry’s T, to The very best,
From the first, I have the rest.
Where are the autos stored,
Where is this vast collection?
They are held all in my mind,
Out hey come, in reflection.

While Miller's name was brought up, it was not Miller's plans that were being talked about. It was the late Leon Parker.
At the time the above was posted was just too close to Leon's passing, just not the right time for her to be trying to get things sorted out. No updates have been posted. Seems to me there were some closed car drawings made by...

Model TT Rear Brake Question

I have a few questions after I pulled the Left rear wheel off my Doodlebug with a Model TT rear. It looks like a grease bomb went off and coated everything. The one pad was balled up in a grease covered wad and the other is pulling up from the shoe. I’m sure the other side looks exactly the same... Since I’m new to all this and don’t know anything...

TT Solid Tires and Wooden Fellow

First post
My TT has solid rear tires with wooden fellows. One of the rims is kind of loose between the fellow and rim and is currently shimmed to keep it on the rim. It's my understanding that other wooden fellow wheels have rivets that keep the fellow on the metal rim, this doesn't seem to have them. So how are they held on?

I found another Stevens tool for the collection. It is a set of knock off wheel pullers. It is actually a Stevens/Walden tool, but it is from the time period of the Stevens Walden buyout in 1926, so it is still a T era tool. The real neat thing is the box. I have never seen another steel box with the Stevens logo. This thing has been on E-Bay for...

Oshkosh typically draws over 700,000 people from all...

I don't have inside knowledge, but my understanding is that it (the MTFCA tour) is still on. If what I've heard is correct, the hotel plans to be open and has made accommodations to the club that make the situation workable, at least at this time.
Thanks Tom.

Craft stores are closed so can't get a spool of craft wire.
The coil box I restored last time had about a three strand braided copper (26 ga?) wire.

Does it have to be brass?
I wouldn't think so?

Rich, those where the Jahns pistons, they where made out of any aluminum they could find, I saw one that did not have crap for compression in a cylinder, tore it down and I could see through it on top from porosities in the aluminum.

When the engine is installed or in other situations, it is a problem to use the torque wrench for example with cylinder head bolts. Here's a little tip:
1. Tighten an easily accessible screw with the desired torque.
2. Use the torque wrench to readjust a ring / open-end wrench with welded-on pick-up on this screw (step by step, starting with a...

Some torque values are only addressed in the number of turns on a screw, not foot or inch pounds.
I assembled a Ford V6 with all the values in number of turns, no torque wrench was used. I checked the
assembly with a torque wrench and the values were exactly the same as with a torque wrench.
