Change of plans, instead of going east I will be heading west and able to attend the Chickasha swapmeet. After the meet I will be heading south and east and south from chickasha with an empty trailer (6x12 enclosed). The route is roughly Chickasha, Houston, Panama City Beach, Key Largo.

Check your fans. This one was making a rattling noise that I suspected had something to do with the fan a week before it threw the blade. I broke the opposite one off to get back home. New fans are only $12.50. Some how it didn't hurt anything.

So I have been “commissioned” to copy my Tobin Arp thrust facing tool. It is a very nice design as you can move the cutting tool radially as it spins. The TA is 1-1/8” diameter boring bar.

I tested my Boyce MotoMeter today in a pan of hot water. I have never gotten my engine hot enough to see if it works. One curious thing I noticed is that the red fluid can only be seen on the back face. With the red fluid within the range of the circle, I can't see it from the front. Is this normal or do I have a goofy MotoMeter?

If you want to see from the front do as Jim Davis suggested above and turn the cap around so it faces the front.(I do the same thing). It's not a sealed system.

Trying to get a rough price estimate on an engine rebuild. My 1923 Ford Model T runabout had low compression (but still ran) and needed all new pistons, piston rings, valves, guides, new camshaft, new timing gear, re-babbited , new transmission bands, etc (basically a full-engine rebuild). Also the magneto is being rebuilt 100% too....

I have a 24 roadster that has a set of headlights with a bulb on top of the reflector and a single wire running between them and up to the terminal block (disconnected). This is in addition to the high and low beam bulb.
I haven't been able to find any documentation about this setup.
Can someone tell me what this light is for and what to wire it...

Model A reflectors are very different; for one thing, they clip into the headlight bucket and are not spring loaded like the T ones. These are fairly uncomon, not being used very long. The upper bulb is actually a parking lamp bulb, but could be used (I suppose) as a Low beam bulb.

It has gas in the bowl but the 24 T won't start.

the gas does flow out the disconnected gas line at the carburetor so, probably dirt or stuck needle valve or dirt. Thanks to all of you for your input.

Normally, I use Ultra Black on both sides of the gasket which makes it hard to take the cover off without destroying the gasket and the subsequent scraping and cleaning. This is my John Mansville speedometer head that I plan to put on my 1915. Is there something missing here or has someone modified something? Other images I have seen on the interweb show a protrusion coming down from the bottom.

It is maddening when that one little part vanishes from the planet and you don't have a spare. In this case the part in question is the little valve spring seat pin (#3057). In my 3000 parts drawer I found plenty of seats, but not one pin. So I'm wondering if a piece of the same diameter drill bit would be OK. Hard enough? Not too brittle?

When you take off and put on your top boot, do you loosen and tighten some sort of tension adjusting strap? Or once a tension adjuster is set, do you ever move it? I'm not worried about what is original, I'm wondering about functionality.

Bill Elliot shows an original short strap with serrated buckle from his '14 Ford along with new ones from Classtique in the link below:

I believe Classtique puts a snap on one end so you can run a nail or screw through it hen you fasten it to the bottom of the seat. It keeps the strap from opening up and splitting or breaking.

Please recall that after Victor stopped producing reliable headgaskets, the problem wasn't the copper, it was the core. Steve Coniff did research on this subject, and found the black core they use for modern headgaskets needed to be used.

I am trying to install a Timken tapered bearing kit on my '27. When I install the housing against the left side differential housing, the face of the bearing housing has very little contact with the differential housing. There is a counter-bore on the new bearing that takes away much of the surface. I have a question out to Mac's, but have not...

If you are short on funds or cannot get it exchanged, it can be made to fit simply by machining off the lip on the spool. This is a one way fix though, and vandalised an original part. I'm sure it was done back in the days to get a fix done.

My friend Troy in Gold Run, CA went & picked it up with four flat tires - it was locked up.

Troy took it to his house and I recommended EB

I had to remove the RT front fender bracket as it was bent. After straightening I was wondering if I could reattach with bolts instead of rivets. It would make the job a lot simpler. Thanks

We really need Holley NH Carbs and that is what we are mostly taking. We will give full core charge for complete carbs. The bodies need to be in good condition no cracks. We will also take Kingston L4 cores as well.

I believe my starter is 5/8” shaft. It has the square switch with the cable to the rear but it isn’t Abell. The flywheel is multi disk and not stepped. Gas tank date is 10/5, a Twin Cities build.

I would like to hear others' experience with and/or opinions around milling an aluminum Z-head to increase compression.

By my estimation, there is currently some 0.150 space between the pistons and the cylinder head horseshoe squish area. This is including the head gasket (photos below)

There looks to be ample meat in the head casting to mill,...

No not me! I have a correct year rebuilt engine for the 26 pickup. Also a Muncie 3 speed to install along with better front fenders. I started removing the fenders yesterday and the are 33% metal, 33% rust and 33% bondo. I knew the front cross member needed replaced because of rust. After removing bondo to find the bolts and I got all the metal...

I started refinishing my wheels. Sanded down the wood and metal fellows and painted them black.

But then it came time to sand the Hayes wheels and prep them for paint. I was just going to paint them silver so they'd be uniform. But after sanding and cleaning, they are reeeeeeeeeaally shiny.

Is that how they were originally? There is a bad spot...

Back in the T era there were crankshafts made with 1-3/8” crank pins. The advertising implied that they could be used with T rods, and now I understand that this is true!!

Had I not heard it on the news this afternoon, I would have completely forgot, but tonight (or tomorrow morning), March 8, at 2:00 am, daylight savings time goes into effect, so clocks need to be set forward one hour. This means you will have one extra hour of daylight to work on your T. Jim Patrick.

Well,....I'm guessing that because TT trucks were used for all kinds of things that involved pumping fluids, like water (fire fighting equipment) or fuel (as in tank truck) I'm thinking that the most common need for such a power take-off would be to drive a pump.

Just want to give Scott C and pat on back for a good part. Got some of his new Float Valves and Seats. Installed one in a friend’s NH that was having a problem with gas flow going up a hill when tank level was low.
Problem appears to be solved.
Car went over a certain hill with about 1.5 inches of gas just fine. It would not with the other float...

What is the functional or geometric difference between a LH and RH #60 front arm on the beehive style? The brass tag and hard oiler bolt head tab are two differences, but the geometry seems to have the perch hole, shackle hole, and arm spring end all in straight alignment. Ted Aschman's article on Murray Fahnestock's valve timing method describes home made tools easily made to substitute for the Wilson tool. It would be used with original pistons or their modern equivalents, and Aschman provides measurements. But how about these modern pistons?

The process was/is intended for setting valves on a worn out valve train only.

You will not get any benefit by doing so. In fact it will hurt performance in your case.

Don’t do it.

You have low use on the cam and lifters.

Set valve lash a .010” on both intake/exhaust per the cam manufactures recommendations.

As I read it Daddy at the Saloon in Dupuyer Montana. Taken Unawares. He was a Methodist Minister but went where ever he was needed. Interesting to me are the later fenders on what appears to be a 1914 Runabout. I'm not sure if it is Grand dad's car. I haven't seen other photos of it.
Dupuyer is North of Great Falls along U.S. Route...

Two day's ago I picked up an Model T engine with # 70784 .
I think that must be october 1911 .
But the cyl. head has 18 mm sparkplug thread .
Some time in the past I have read about that .

Good find! It looks like a whole maintained 1911 engine with service updates, like the later fan assembly. Neat that it still has a dogleg intake and wing nuts. Does the exhaust manifold have T511 on the center-inside facing the head and, if so, is it prominent or smaller and harder to read?

Ok so I will soon be installing some wood into the steel parts of my top bows and was wondering if you guys had any tips n tricks on installing the curved wood pieces. I am guessing that I need to spread the metal apart and so forth but I don't want to damage anything. Thanks in advance for any thoughts and or photos.

Kiln drying hardens the lignin in wood and that makes it hard to steam bend. If you can, use air-dried wood with an open grain. Open grain woods are easier to steam bend than closed grain.

Another from Mom's album shows this dapper fellow behind his '20 or so Touring. The spent top windows and the dried mud show faithful use. The numerals on the plate match 1925 MT, white on red. That could well be a battery box underneath.

Just a warning, be careful that you do not apply any DC (battery voltage) to the AC voltage circuit of the Flywheel Magneto while using a jumper wire. That action will kill the magnetism in the magnets.

I'll be replacing the top on my 21 roadster all I have is the bows so not much to go by. Did the 21 roadsters have a roll-up back curtain with fasteners at the belt, or were they tacked along the bottom and covered with hidem, thanks.

I took my 1911 windshield frames and new brass channel to a glass shop to replace the cracked original plate glass. Yesterday he called to say 1/4 inch safety glass will not fit in the channel/frame because the glass he removed was 3/16. What do you guys do for new windshield glass? Thanks, Art
