Front cross member "heavier steel", thickness?

Not wanting to hijack an earlier thread or have it drift-off into another direction about different front cross members ( ), I thought I would ask my question in a new thread. When Ford made the change in 1920 to a new cross member made of heavier steel, what is the thickness from the old to the new cross member? If anyone might know I would be...

Mild bend in front top bow fix?

Hi all, I just noticed that I have a slight bend in my front two-man top bow. I wonder whether to straighten it or leave it alone? If straighten it, how such as maybe put a pipe on the end and bend it back? -- IV
Last post
I would leave as is. If those are older or original bows they are probably rusted on the inside but not really bad. The bend is not really noticeable unless you look at it closely.

Looking at an unusual “early Ford T” to purchase. Looked more late 11 to early 12 put together. 9/10 steering column, split valve engine mid teens rear axle case and so forth. am looking forward to your further assessment of this car.
I am still pretty sure front seat is runabout, but less sure it is Ford, though there have been some photos in the long-past which had very similar seat dividers.

I've been working on T's all of my adult life, over 60 years to be exact, and have never run across a T with the early style clutch pedal shaft! According to the 1927 parts book, this style was used up through 1925. Every T I've ever owned has had the late style. It seems most of them must have been converted. I have the rear axle unit, and I have the control lever and hardware. What's missing is the linkage. I'm guessing it would be like a brake rod without the rear dog leg — a 5/16 rod with turnbuckle(s). Is that right?

There is NO turnbuckle. The adjustment is made by the position of the gear shift. If you are lucky, perhaps you may find one at Chickasha.

Bendix bending the stake washers?

Hi all, by what method does a Model Ter bend the tabs of the stake-washers on the Bendix? I find it very awkward and difficult to get to.
-- IV
Last post
Normally a little starting bend with single slot screwdriver blade, levered against the spring loop.
Finish the flattened bend against the Bendix bolt with narrow width angle jaw 10 slip joint (Channel Lok) pliers, opposite jaw on backside of bolt.

Also a guess of what it be worth as have a long list of T items I need. Thanks, Damp.

I searched for a number of years for a closed car mirror or just the bracket that was available through Western Auto Parts & the like back in the day to utilize some of the open car mirrors available . I ended up fabricating my own to mount this oval mirror onto our '19 Centerdoor & being the Centerdoor body widens out, it actually is quite useful.

Also, make sure the ruckstell shifter is fully forward in the direct drive position otherwise you will fighting against the additional gear reduction of the ruckstell under drive gearing.

Hi David these magnetos are valuable I suggest you photograph them and post them to HCCA Classifieds: Parts and Collectables page ...$800 to $1000 per each would not be unreasonable.

Arthur, there are some who would say .020 backlash is too much. If the pinion is engaged for the full length of the teeth, and your prussian blue indicates full engagement on the teeth, you have it right. That is preferable to having less backlash but only part engagement at the gear faces. Well done.

Bob, any gunshop will have brass cleaner for you, it is used to clean spent (fired) cartridge cases before reloading, the main ingredient is phosforic acid, you just dunk the brass in it for a few minutes and it comes out bright and clean, it does not attack solder so should be quite safe for carb floats, be sure to rinse in warm water after.

On the 17 to 21 open cars you can take a piece of rubber hose split it and slip it over the glass so they do not vibrate as much.

Is the mounting plate supposed to be on the top or the bottom surface of the upper rail edge on a fall of 1924 (1925 model) runabout? Shown here on bottom, which I think is correct.

I found a curiosity the other day & thought the forum may be interested. Stan Howe have you ever seen one like this?
On the left you will see a H1, on the right the mystery carburetor. As you know the H1 is an all bronze/brass carb but the mystery carb is brass and aluminum I think. Very noticeably lighter than the H1 on the left. The floats are...

I posted these in 2017 or so, but no one had seen them before, so I thought I'd try again. I've searched Google patents, internet images, the forum, Kenealy's accessory books, old catalogs, etc. and haven't been able to identify the manufacturer of these brakes. Any ideas?

Agreed on the physics. The pedal hookup arm on the cross shaft does give you a leverage boost as compared to a straight pull cable like the original A-C, for example, but having the force on the self-energizing side halved at the brake probably isn’t great. I wonder how wide spread the idea of self-energizing brakes was at the time. Clearly, many...

I’m working hard to save every last little usable bits off of my ‘25 parts chassis before I haul the rest to the metal recycler and came across these little clamps.
I thought at first that they might be towing hooks, but they’re facing the wrong way. Could they be part of an aftermarket gizmo of some sort? If so, and someone is needing them, I’d...
Last post
John...I removed the “gizmos” and started cleaning them up.
One of them looks almost new after some time with the wire wheel. The other one fought me more coming off and I broke the bolt. So you’ll have to find another square headed shoulder bolt to match.
I’m gonna try to extract the broken bolt and finish cleaning up the second one.

I drove the T and had a vendor space where I was selling some odds and ends and a couple guys talked to me about a Model T clown car that they’re reviving. Separated Weld on Wire Spoke Wheel; Suggestions on Fix

Today, while getting ready to mount a new 21 tire on a previously powder coated wheel, I found a separated weld on a spoke that I had missed before sending them to be powder coated. The weld is on the end of a long spoke going from the rim to the hub, and is on the hub end, right next to the hub cap hole. I know that if I have it re-welded, the...
Last post
Terry, if it is possible, tap the spoke aside when you drill the hole. That way you will get a clean hole which will give you a stronger weld.
Two points to mention. I tap the spokes with the wooden handle of a hammer to check if any spokes are unsound before doing any other work. The duds will not ring like sound ones.
Second, some powder...

I put new bronze thrusts in the rear axle. Amazingly they fit with zero clearance with out having to thin the right washer. I then measured the gasket and it is...

That's because the fiberglass bodies being sold to them are listed as either 1923 (bucket T) or 1927 (roadster) Model T's. Some fiberglass ones are actually a bit longer than original for more leg room. Not many are steel bodied. So if you see one for sale see if they say steel or fibergalss

New gasoline shut off valve sticking?

I bought a fuel shut off valve that mounts to the carb from Eckler's so I don't have to crawl under my 1915 touring to turn the gas off. The problem I'm having is the valve is getting harder and harder to turn. I now have to use pliers to shut the valve. Is anybody else having this problem or do I have a defective valve? I took it off and polished...

these are an excellent choice and when properly fitted, allow you to remove the carb for servicing without losing a bunch of gas. While like most, I have carb-mounted valves and frankly while they stop the risk of fire and dripping, it is dumb to have them directly attached to the carb. My next project this spring is to fit a very similar...

Has anyone installed one of these ? How did you determine you needed to shim your crankshaft ? to How did you machine yours to obtain the proper thickness ? Many thanks!!
Last post
Rather than use solder to build up the thrust face, I have used soldering techniques to add whitemetal. This can be a permanent fix, provided the thrust face on the crankshaft is not undercut with wear. Either way, if the added material is worked back so the cap is a neat fit, any such wear will give some running clearance.

What is the deal with this wrench? It looks like a 1911 Model T Toolkit hub wrench. However, the small opening is a hexagon (8-sided), instead of the normal 6-side. Were some of them made this way or is it for something else?
