Update on the battery I bought
Replies: 1

davidheavner » Mon Feb 03, 2020 11:52 pm
First post
Last September I bought a new battery from Tractor Supply. It is a 6 volt heavy duty Traveler. I have not had to charge it yet which surprised me as I have had to charge my other batteries by now. I have not driven the T that much and it has been cold. It starts the T as good as it did the first time tried it.
Last post
I have always had good luck with TSC 6V batteries in my Ford Tractor and T’s. I do use a battery maintainer for the T battery since it doesn’t get driven as much.

A friend has a speedster fitted with a pair of swayback NH Holley carburetors. In rebuilding the exhaust system, he is looking to simplify the setup. The car has a 4 valve Rajo head, but the camshaft is unknown. Nor has he any knowledge of the pistons used without pulling plugs and having a look. I have a good OF Stromberg carburetor on the shelf,...

Model T stats for New Zealand - and a wild guess for the rest of the world

Not as if I didn't have a lot of other things to do I thought I'd take a quick peek to see how many Model T's we had in NZ.
This is a question I'm almost always asked whenever someone sees my car and I have, up 'till now, not been able to answer. Fortunately I've ways of dealing with big data and have managed to beat it into submission...

Henry ford radiator ornament
by
Dropacent » Mon Feb 03, 2020 9:51 pm
A while back, somebody asked me about the history of the Henry Ford radiator cap. I’ve lost the message so thought I would post this here. This newspaper clipping tells the story of the original bust commissioned by Ford. The artists name is prominently shown on the back of original ornaments, so I’m assuming they were connected to the artist. If...

Improved car brake rivet size, and friction material for bands?

Hi,
Hoping someone could tell me the correct size for the brass brake shoe fixing rivets for a '26 please (with the larger brake drums)? These are the part hollow rivets that are fitted through the friction material to the metal shoe itself. In my case I expect the friction material to be 3/16 thick.
I'd like to know rivet length and diameter so...

Dan, yes I did read about the early metal-metal brakes. Guess they really were for parking only!
I accept that one could use pop rivets, it's just that I wouldn't. I'm no stranger to doing whatever's needed to make things work, and I expect if one only used the brakes when stationary it would be fine, but in some things I can be a bit particular....

I have this 1924 Model T roadster with the serial number plate glued or cemented to the frame rail. It doesn't look like it was from the 1924 era or put there by the factory. Does anyone have an idea as to when this plate was first used and on what vehicle?

Keith, thank you for correcting my error. I got carried away with the idea of number stamping a strip of tin/copper and affixing it to the frame. With a little tarnish/paint it would look much more authentic than a repro data plate.

As you may know, Ron Patterson and I are writing a book on the Hand Cranked Coil Tester (HCCT).
I am researching serial numbers on the Ford HCCT.
The Ford HCCT can be identified by the Part/Serial number stamped on the base (see photo below).
It may be on the right or left side.
We would like to know the serial number of your unit and if it is on...
Last post
It’s interesting that the manual doesn’t mention the pulley. I wonder if this manual is slightly later after discontinuation of the pulley, or if the pulley was actually used by Ford to qualify the HCCT itself prior to its use. I have no idea other than guesses.

The tread looks like a period type that hasn’t been around for 80+ years. Quite interesting.

If using the H lens style rims, those are made with little tabs that rest against a squared off edge on the glass. That is a feature of the fluted Ford H lens. So your clear lens needs to...

Most likely some sort of a road draft tube that hung below the engine in the stream of air under the vehicle to create a slight vacuum and keep the crankcase fumes out of the car.

I have just been named president of the West-Central Indiana Model T'ers club. Still being a novice in model t things I feel honored that the club would have confidence in me. So, I want to invite people to check us out and ask any questions. If I don't know the answer I will sure try and find out. Carl Finchum.

I'm planning on putting on my 26 coupe a right tail light with double bulbs so I can have a brake and tail light.I was thinking down the line adding turn signals by just wiring it like a modern car where the turn signal is just intermittent brake light. I'm sure I'm not the first to think of it but, haven't seen anything like that in the forum, or...

I think the biggest problem you'll have is the multitude of choices.
Except for the fender bracket, the optional 1926-27 Model T and the standard Model A 1928-29(early) model A, drum style brake/tail light assemblies are basically the same.

Neat picture. You have to really look to see the driver as he blends in with the shrubs behind and with all the white you can just make out the three ladies each holding a child.
Are you sure his brakes didn't fail and he ran thru the flower garden

I have sure Mic in my 15 touring. My father found this crank in a busted block in the late 50. I just had the motor rebuild 2 years ago by Pats Restoration and it still usable. I don't drive much over 35 mph.

I am finally putting my 16 Valve Roof engine together and want to have a few words of advice from others. It is a model B roof and I am using a new scat crank. It has been suggested to me that for driving a stipe 250 cam and stock flattop pistons are the best way to go. What do others think who have had experience with these heads? I want power...
Last post
It will run a heck of a lot better if you increase the compression ratio. Take the time to CC the head - I think you will find the CR to be under 5:1 with stock pistons.

If a extra 50 bucks is not a problem for you ,you are a blessed man.
No real reason for a T radiator to be that much higher than a tractor or other car radiator.

Also received the cable style brake linkage system from Dan McEachern, the workmanship is terrific .I will be very proud of this system !
Thank you Larry and Dan

Hi Pete,
I too recently bought one of Dan's AC cable linkage assemblies. I am going to hook them to a repo RMB assembly. Please post pictures of your installation. I'll do the same but it may not be for a while.

My previous post got me thinking about Ruckstell values. I remember when $150. was an outrageous asking price for a Ruckstell. And walking past them at swap meets shaking my wondering what the heck the guy was thinking! Back then you could find good ones for around $100. of course gas was
.19 to .25 cents a gallon!

My parts chassis came with an accessory belly band (engine support) that I’m going to swap over to my car.
I also have some new wood blocks for the engine pan ears. They were absent from my car when I bought it.
I’m wondering if I need both the blocks and the belly band.
Last post
Ford warned about about using the side blocks in Trucks, that the frame twisting broke crankcase arms, and pan twisting from holding the arms to rigid.
So, I have never used them on cars since I was in my teens.
Don't believe it! Take your floor boards out, and install the side blocks and bolts, the way they should be. Take it, still without...

The Mag only powers the coil box, so that would not be a problem for a T engine with a generator.
An early T engine that taps some of the mag voltage to charge a small battery could or might mess up LED lights.

Thank you Frank,
I’ve seen two of the links, and one (forum from 2000) doesn’t accept my email. I sent an email off to the link you posted.
The racers were all classified as non stock in one description, so I wonder what T was used, and if it was modified.
Thank you again for the suggestions and help,

I'm in Nashville looking for a glass globe repairman. I was pouring packing peanuts over a glass globe I've had in a box for two years and a T part poured over on the globe and broke it. I should have left the damn thing unpacked being it's been safe for the past two years that way! There are a few small pieces the size of a half dollar coin with...

If you can see the glue lines after you put it back together you could paint more lines on the globe to make it look like crazing which is common in old pottery.

These little petcocks are made from unobtainium. They are used in the early Kingstons, some of the Holleys and a few others. Most often the need is for the early Kingston 4 ball with the short inlet -- the one with the inlet half way up the chamber. They are always missing, broken or leak.
They are 1/16 NPT pipe thread. I have never been able to...

There are lots of ways to retain the plug but I used 1/4 - 32 threads which should tighten up very well and not unwind themselves. It is also easier to whittle a plug if you do lose the turn plug and easier to send out a replacement.

That would be the least important place to put another spring. It would not keep the ends of the axle from bouncing, but might actually make the ride harder because your fulcrum will be right in the center. Hassler's would be a better choice, however I personally don't think either is necessary.

They were available in the ‘90’s. Townsend also offered Bronze main caps for A crank conversions and also block extension castings for these conversions.
I guess if you go back through old Vintage Ford magazines you can get a more exact time frame
