Hi all, I am building a 1922 Depot Hack and I am ready to attach the Pleasantville Manufacturing Body to the frame. My question is how do I do that ? The regular Model T bodies are held by the brackets as mentioned above but on a custom body you have other options. Our speedster body is bolted directly to the chassis. I think we used the six brackets that are riveted to the chassis so it gives a slightly lower look. Of course several items are in the way, the one I remember best was the brake...

Next I checked the magneto itself with a 1156 bulb and it in fact lights up.
What Am missing? Any ideas...
Last post
Bad switch or wiring.
the later switches (oval plate in the dash) had issues on their contacts. And IIRC no one repoped these (someone should have!!!). The earlier switches were easier to rebuild, and the coilbox switches were EXTREMELY easy to rebuild
It may also be a wiring issue - wires on T's vibrate and break. Run a jumper to check if it's...

Lowest priced new Model T

by
John kuehn » Mon Oct 07, 2019 3:45 pm

Am I correct that Model T’s got to their lowest prices in the black 17-25 era? I was thinking that the Runabouts got below $300.00 out the door some time during the 20’s and they were a non-stater car. Any historians ought there have an idea out there?
Thanks
Last post
The inflation calculator says that $260 in 1924 would be $3900.88 in 2019. That's still a pretty cheap new car. In 1924 a $20 gold piece would buy you a new suit, a good meal in a nice restaurant, and a night's stay in a good hotel. Today that same coin would buy all that stuff. :D

If we do, are there only 2 positions for the shifting lever? It lookslike it would go forward or back and not side to side. Chaffins book doesnt really explain it.
Last post
Yes, lever on the axle is forward in low (Ruckstell) and back in direct (Ford).
Determining the gear ratio is next.
You could put the axle in direct and the pedal in high, jack up a rear wheel and take the plugs out. Turn the crank and see how many turns it takes to make a full revolution at the wheel.
Kind of a PIA, but unless you have the axle...

I understand why someone would use an earlier rear hub and re-drill for five studs to fit a 26-27 brake hub, but I don't understand why a ring was tack welded to the threaded area of the hub. I'd appreciate any observations or comments on this modification. It certainly makes for a difficult removal. 20191006_155700.jpg

There should be a decent supply of really good rear hubs. I did a production run about 20 years ago

I bought a new set of springs from Langs that seem to be made by Snyders. Have ordered the seat upholstery kit from Classtique. So here’s the thing. I’m looking at these new cushion springs that are made on an aluminum framework. They already look kinda twisted and bent right out of the box and they are definitely not as well built as the original...

Once again I'm mystified by a repro part that is not made to original spec. Why ?!? How much more would it cost to do it right ? Spring frames will bend even when they're steel. Aluminum sounds like sure failure sooner than later.

This is getting really old, and I'm stumped. The 1915 runabout usually starts on one pull when it's warmed up. I even get an occasional free start. But starting when it's cold is another story. Cold includes an ambient temperature of 70º. This used to be an easy-starting car. A couple of chokes, flip the key, pull once, and it was running. No...

Have you tried putting your hand over the carb while somebody cranks it: no vacuum ?

The two holes in the head casting were used to machine the the valve seats. When it left ford, each head had a closed plug in one and a spark plug plug in the other. Through time, many owners added a priming petcock in the solid plug. That makes a nice look now, lotsa brass. You don’t see this pictured example much, but it would allow a battery...

I am thinking that there is not any difference, but I have been wrong before.

The 1928 parts book listed the rear spring as the same 1909 to 1927;
The arc of the rear cross member was changed for 1926-27, it was taller to drop the body down. I mounted a big drum rear under my 21 without changing the spring with no issues. The only difference might be the number of leafs between body styles.

I was looking at the pics of the Scandinavia bands on Lang’s website and noticed that there didn’t seem to be as dark with the tarry substance as they were a few years ago. I have Kevlar in my 24 Coupe and have been thinking of replacing the cotton bands in my 19 Runabout so I know about Kevlar.
Just wondering if they have improved the...

As I remember the original Scandinavia linings had a tighter and finer weave than their later ones. That was what made them better than the later ones. And looking at the other older brands such as Wards and a few others they were woven tighter also. I have some of those and 1 original Scandinavia lining and the weave is almost identical.
But...

I've just fitted a Metzger Automatic windshield to my 1909 touring (Car #2436). Unfortunately this screen is missing it's Metzger Automatic brass tag. Langs list these tags in their catalogue, however they are currently out of stock Does anybody know where I'd be able to obtain one of these tags for my car ?

Found this Bosch type DU4 mod 2 magneto tonight in a barn scheduled for demolition soon. Is it the type for model T Ford?
Last post
Yeah but, that is the nice early version with the clips-cover (as opposed to screws) and brass base. Along about the great war, the cover changed and the base and ends were made of aluminum. These were original equipment on quite number of brass era cars and trucks, as well as after-market and are still popular replacements for many brass era cars...

This is ether going on my 21 or? Anyone know what it was off of? Yes it has a Model T spider on it. The lower bracket is adjustable so you can set the box and column at most any angel. The bearing surfaces are a bit worn but the teeth look good. It is a cross swing. The ball needs some loving but looks to be the same size as T.

Thanks for what it fits. The rust worms got to the outside of the shaft some, but being solid don't think will hurt it much. I will have to shorten it about 9-10 inches and will use the T mast jacket and rods.

1914 Wiring Question

This may be a dumb question but, I’m at the finishing stages of restoring a 1914 touring and would like to know where the ground wire from the battery was originally attached on the car. Was it bolted to the frame somewhere or directly to the engine and if so on what bolt? Lang’s does not sell the battery wires for a 1914 so I’m assuming I’ll just...

Thanks for all the responses. I ended up running the ground wire along with the contactor harness and putting it on one of the front cover bolts near the contactor. I started the car for the first time today since rebuilding absolutely everything. Runs great!! Couldn’t be happier.

Is the Model T considered a compact/sub car?

Yesterday, I was parking in a city parking garage and noticed the garage still has a few reserved sections for Compact cars, up front. Which of course got me to thinking: would my 21 Touring be classified as a compact car?
I know from driving the model t, that it has a smaller foot print on the road than most cars that pass me.
As I got looking...

I just installed a nice old stock New Day on my 27 Roadster. I wired it according to the instructions that came with the wiring harness but the color code is totally off from what's marked on the New Day. I believe I have the piston travel correct by watching through the spark plug hole and using a straw but as I turn the timer the coil starts...

Here’s a pic of the timer rod belt clearance on my 21 T Touring with the New Day timer. On my car it was a little tricky getting the timer rod to clear under the lower radiator outlet but it worked out with a little tweaking.

It is all about Cv, or flow coefficient of your fuel system. Are you draining your tank through a fire hose or a syringe needle? They both have atmospheric pressure at the tank, but one will clearly starve the car of fuel. If you cannot guess which one, stop reading now.
Not all carburetors have the same Cv through the float valve from one brand...

Guess if you have a supply of NOS or good original replacement parts, using them will be fine. For many that is not the case.

On a ‘26-‘27 “all steel body” (coupe or tudor); Use urethane caulk under the wood (wood to body, inside the “L” channel that holds the top wood). You want to seal the wood to the body so your headliner and panels don’t get wet in the rain or while washing the car. This is the same urethane that you would use to put a modern windshield in. I use 3M...

Is my pinion bearing worn too far?

I pulled apart my spare torque tube and was encouraged by what I measured. The front bushing had been replaced and the clearance between it and the driveshaft was less than .001”. The shaft had .001” of wear compared to the adjacent diameter that was not in contact with the bushing so I suspect the bushing was reamed to fit. So far so good....

If my babbitt bushing is a later replacement...
These thirty-year-old NOS tires look brand new. These 90-year-old NOS cotton band linings look perfect. This NOS Babbitt thrust washer looks good to go.
Some materials are very stable for decades, or even centuries. Some are not.

Years ago, after lapping/polishing the sediment bulb valve, I used bar soap on the valve.
It seals and lubricates and is not affected by gasoline.
No problems so far.
My father has done the same thing in the past on his Model T.

I am looking for ideas on how to clean a fuel line. Of course a 6 foot long pipe cleaner would be great but they don't make them that long. Looking for suggestions.

Get a some steel cable, fray one end and pull/push (scrub) it through one end to the other. Flush it out with gas. A new line may be quicker and cheaper though.

I have used wire like Hank above. I have also used a resistor (see picture). Depending on the current draw resistance values may need to be changed. A voltage divider with equal value resistors would be problematic for something drawing a lot of current. If the Horn drives around 1 Amp at 6 volts, a one ohm series resistor will drop 6 volts.
