Be very careful when you buy a swivel. Make sure it is tight with no slop and the right ratio! You can make very expensive purchases on ebay and car shows ... that are mistakes.

I was overhauling the engine of my 1915 Touring car and when the car was back together I sent friends a pix stating done. One of the guys came back and asked me if my car was a wide track to which I answered no, absolutely not. Obviously I didn't have a clue! I am building the speedster engine. I think I just dodged a bullet today ... Today I was riveting the ring gear bolts in place that hold the ring gear and the 16 spools that Im using for oil slingers. While riveting the bolts one of the triple gear pins fell out. I thought they were in good shape. No wear at all and no signs of looseness. So today...

Autie, Sounds like you are making progress. If you cut the retainer ring in four pieces and label them as to where they originally were when solid and then install them in that order on the flywheel , I do not think weighing them will be needed. I’m trying to finish up the top for my 1913 Touring and need to know the location for the side curtain fasteners on the inside of the car. Attention, NOT FOR THE PURISTS
My car had a cast iron FSB with the brass valves. Scott you are so smart. You are absolutely correct about a $50 dollar part. For an aircraft, parts are much more expensive. The fuel bowl is the same design on my Cessna 120 with a glass bowl. On my Cessna 150 the bowl is also glass but a little different in design and as you said not a $50 dollar part. Tractor carburetors also have many enter...

Or you could just rotate the ring gear 90 degrees. If you go the frugal way you’ll need to mark the ring gear and flywheel so you don’t put it back in the same place, oh make sure you put the ring gear on the correct side. Don’t ask me how I know to check that.

Usually a closed spool will not fit a 26-7 axle housing because of the shoulder on the rear end of the spool. Axle housings to accept the closed spool are machined so the shoulder goes on over the machined rebate. The later axle housings have a tapered shoulder, preventing the closed spool from seating. An open spool will fit early housings but...

I use a lathe.
Measure the axle opening, then the spindle, and that gives you the difference. Take it all off the bottom IF the bushings are not overly thick as some of the repos are. If not, split the difference to favor the lower one, leave about .008 clearance. A dial indicator will get you spot on. When you press it together Bingo! it fits....

the other thing to look for is a worn float valve or a poor float valve to carb seat seal. That is the real name of this truck bed I'm working on. The American Wagon Co. Is the maker. If I were smart enough, I would post the link from 2018 as its the rest of the story. The snow and cold was good for something, I went to the shop and tinkered with the truck. I got the boards in place on the driver side. Now its drill and bolt them on. Im...

How we rebuild a Ruckstell in Alpine, California

The first two pictures above are for a TT truck Ruckstell. The lower two are for the car. I have the book on Ruckstell Axle and have the pictures there. Also have had many other axles apart, so I know where the parts belong. In the cut away picture you will see right in the very center between the ends of the axle. That is the washer I was...

1909 top bow measurements

First post
Hi all,. I'm ready to make top bows for an 09 touring. Does anyone have the measurements for each bow, I'd like to get overall width, and height from the very tip of the socket to the top of the wood bow on each row. Also the inside ( or outside) radius of the corners, and a cross section of the material would be helpful.
Any help appreciated....

Hello Michael:
A contact for steam bent bows is:
Mel Draper, Geromesville, Ohio (419) 368-3226. Tell Mel that you also need a 48 length of this same lumber to create the rear bow wedge.
Not sure who if anyone is making a kit top for pre-1913 cars. If there is such a supplier, I would be curious about a single design that fits the multiple tops...

Hi All,
Since rebuilding my gearbox a couple of months ago I have had a strange thing happening with my 1915 Speedster. When the throttle is fully opened, or even 3/4 fully opened, in high gear, generally on a hill, the car starts miss firing and sometimes coughing and spluttering. If I drop into low the problem stops, irrespective of the throttle...

To George who started this thread, I think you should check your coils, timer and coil box to be sure all the coils are vibrating and sending a good spark. I just remembered that last week a neighbor had come to see my cars and I had removed the cover from the coil box to show him the coils. Apparently I had not properly locked down the cover....

This discussion brings back memories from about 50 years ago when I was in the US Navy. First of all, having been a submarine sailor I can testify to the fact that we were a little irreverent. Rules were meant to be tested.
When we were in a US port typically the base guards were US Marines, a natural target for a bunch of sailors. When we'd come...

I have a ‘23 Touring, I was replacing the tires and I have this rim as a spare. It is not correct for this car and was I wondering if someone knows what it goes to?
Does anyone need this? I am going to order the one I need.

Yes, there was David and they were all built to fit the Model T BUT the challenge is marrying the correct rim to the wheel for which it was intended.

As you can see in the picture, everywhere I go when I park I leave a blob of grease under the car from where the driveshaft meets the transmission.
I realize that something is wrong here but I don't know what it is. Is there some kind of seal that's gone bad?
Last post
Scott, you might check that there is just one gasket in the ball joint assembly. It goes between the back of the hogs head and the ball cap. Some mistakenly fit a gasket on both sides of the ball cap, thus opening up the gap between the ball and the retaining cap holding it in place. This will exaggerate the same problem that a worn ball will...

Does anyone sell or has anyone made silicone valve cover gaskets? You can get them for aircraft and they are nice when you want to be able to remove and reinstall the cover without a lot of hassle. Mine were taken off to get at the valves on a tour a couple of weeks back and I need to install new ones (oil leak.)
Last post
Dick-I've had them on my C85 for over 20 years. Also used them on a big 0-470 and LYC 0-320. No leaks-reused over and over. I think you could get away with gluing one side to the valve cover of a T- I'd just leave the mating surface clean.
I'm going to have to think about this one before proceeding...lots of good suggestions.

Studs vs. Bolts?

Hello, I have been reading up on heads and engine assembly, and came across a post that said every few years the head should be removed to clean out carbon from the combustion chamber. This is said to lead to wear on the block threads from removing and replacing the head bolts repeatedly. Does anyone use studs and nuts to fasten the head, or is...
Last post
I know all the issues that studs bring. Had them on a few Model A engines and all of my V8 Flatheads. Repairs become a huge hassle.
I glue them in to give the coarse threads more purchase. The gasket shellac works well for that, and is easier to get free than Loctite.

Pete, I think someone has altered the distributor you have. The logo on the condenser is MC not the AB devil's head. The second major difference is the points are set up to rotate counter clockwise and the tip on the came shaft is 100% different. Not sure which picture Hank was referring to.
