I have a nice (non generator) Atwater Kent plate and distributor and am concerned about the drive gear for the end of the cam. The gear that came with the set-up has no threads or locking notch and I'm wondering if it's the correct drive gear or is there something missing. Thanks : Bruce

Thanks Dan. The shoulders are not exactly the same width so is there a front and back to the drive gear? Thanks again : Bruce

First post
Replaced pistons/rings. Now have engine knock when advancing engine timing. Quiet at idle, noise increases when advancing Distributor with advance lever and increasing rpms.
Last post
When you tighten the cylinder up with a piston/ring replacement you will increase compression, (providing the cylinder is round) and put more strain on the lower end (rod journals). If the the rod or main bearings are marginal the increased compression will cause any bottom end wear to be amplified and you may notice a thump that wasnt there...

Most vibration problems of the Model T originate in the engine. Various parts of Modern engines, ie, crankshaft, pistons, rods, caps, etc., are balanced for the maximum performance with a minimum of vibration. What can be done during the rebuilding phase of the Model T engine to balance the various parts to keep vibration at a minimum. Is there a...

I think just balancing the parts alone are a big factor. Once you seem to balance the rods and pistons, and flywheel, that should cure alot of it. I am going to have my machine shop dynamically electronic balance my whole assembly with the crank (like they do for hi performance engines). My big block Chevy engine was balanced to within .09 of a...

While that top installation looks great, most of the evidence points to fold over welting being used, not hide-em. Minor detail, but thought you might like to know.

If you get it printed, it has to be true, right? This is a 1904 ad. The first gasoline autos were Lambert 1890 , Duryea 1893, Haynes 1894. pretty sure there are more sprinkled in there. If you believe this ad, Henry’s was 1889, but really he was a late comer. 53497E76-0E79-4D33-A9B5-91327B5C97F6.jpeg 72210CA3-CAD9-4A0C-8C3E-014CCD2CE51C.jpeg

I was doing a little research on TTs and had a bit of challenge finding things.
First I went the the MTFCA online Encyclopedia. Great resource, but I am not finding the TT info. (Also on the production numbers I don't see pickups listed: I assume the truck is TT though.)
I did find the following thread helpful even though measurements are metric...
Last post
The Pickup started in the 1925 Model year so may be counted in the runabout/roadster listing. Truck would/should be TT only. What it boils down to, the more popular body styles (touring, coupe and runabouts) get the most research. 2 doors, 4 doors not so much. TT's even less. Good luck with your search.

Sorry to be getting back to this so late. The gear hole where it fits on the cam is larger then the stub shaft on the cam. Chad, if you have new bushes and cams, and new lined shoes, and you still have no good emergency brake, I would be looking for worn brake drums. The cheap fix usually is to fit a shim on the cam to spread the shoes somewhat. With all new parts at that point, your brake drums are allowing the shoes to expand beyond the effective range of the cam....

Hopefully, someone that has an original gas cap for 1924 could post a photo of what it looks like. I see a lot of different choices from the vendors and the Judging guidelines do not clearly specify either.

A gas cap for a T?
That's not a fair trade.
The T is worth more than a gas cap.
If you wanted a gas cap for a Ugo it would be a different story

I have a feeling I might get scolded for this...but here goes anyway....
I'm looking at the metal fuel line that goes from my new gas tank to my new (rebuilt) carb and I'm thinking that it might be prudent to cut a short section out of that fuel line somewhat near the tank, flare the ends and place a section of rubber fuel line there.
Yes, I...

Do what you wish. A Model T doesn't need a rubber line anywhere. I have over 55,000 miles on my '13 touring, not that that makes any difference, and it still has the same gas line that I put on it in 1962.

On an initial set up with a new timer, I park the timer pull at 5 o'clock on our RHD cars. For your up side down timers that would be 11 0'clock. Does the APCO unit need the two mounting springs like a stock cap does?

I can certainly understand leaving the springs off, but do NOT skip the step of wiring the bolts in place. To do so, you'll need bolts with wire holes drilled through the heads. Do NOT substitute split lock washers in place of the wire.

For years I fitted the seals supplied by the vendors and we all know that the have too smaller OD and need to be glued/sealed in place.
So the million dollar question is, why have we been putting up with them when I simply walked into our local bearing store and bought the right size to fit in??
Last post
I remember that when Milt Webb first proposed using a neoprene seal on the camshaft, he mentioned that it needed a little squeeze between two bits of wood in the vice to swell the outer circumference. I usually do that and add a little black silicone seal. It may not be perfect but it’s worked for me for close to forty years.

ECCO Carburetor

Does anyone out there know anything about an aftermarket ECCO carburetor? Looks a lot like a U&J, but has a mixing control similar to an early Kingston controlled by a rod through the dash. Thanks : Bruce

Today, after ten years of operation, I decided to grease my speedometer chain. First of all, it was almost as clean, and well lubricated as when I put it in, but I thought I'd try something new. I fed the chain in one link at a time, hoping it would come out the other end. It didn't, and I had to remove the whole cable. What happens is the chain...

If your swivel and speedometer are functioning properly, be sure and lay the chain prior to attaching to the speedometer head or you invite a jam and broken link.
To flip the links all in the same direction:
Insert chain in the housing, attach both clutches to chain and screw cable onto swivel.
Leave upper cable loose so you can check the upper...

Is there a certain sealer that should be used to prevent gas drippings when mating brass fittings to sediment bulbs? I'm sure any kind of plumbers tape would simply dissolve.

It appears that your threads are not compatible, the casting is tapered pipe and the fitting is parallel. Find a valve with a tapered pipe thread.

Dad bought our steel-cab stake-bed TT in 1942. It is to eventually be inherited by my family, then on to an enthused Grandson, and is to stay beyond him with our family. This past Sunday afternoon gave me a glimpse into that future, providing a hint of promise that the TT will flourish.
My Grandson came to work on the truck, bringing along one of...

Last weekend I installed a new (old stock) radiator on my 27 Tudor. Install went well and I took the opportunity to upgrade a few parts on my fan as well. I also removed the water pump that someone had installed on my T and went back to the stock pipe system. Driving the car several times since then, I have noticed some noises coming from my...

Hm. Thanks Tim. That gives me pause about why I didn’t hear anything with the old radiator!
Chances are it’s because you said you used to have a water pump. When the engine stops turning the pump does too and it likely impeded the flow enough to stop the gurgling.

There is nothing that runs like one of these! They came in a variety of sizes for different racing engines. Ed Winfield worked for Miller before he went on his own building his carburetors. They were similar but the Miller is a lot simpler and probably IMHO better adapted to T's.
Notice the Master manifold. I have only seen one other of those,...

Sealing Windows

I have a 26 coupe. Does anyone use any kind of sealer between the rubber gasket and the body metal? Also the qtr window I've tried so far doesn't make an even contact all around. I've cleaned the channel well so there isn't any junk in it but it still isn't making good contact. Any suggestions

It's surprising what can happen because of a dead battery! I wonder it that had anything to do with the other problems? You would have thought the magneto would have been affected because of parts floating around in the transmission.
I think it is just a co-incidence the battery was dead.

Well it seems that the top bracket is anchored thru the tack strip with the two carriage bolts and then the armrest goes over the tack strip and is screwed down to the top strip to secure it. The wood was completely gone in the body I restored and remembering back it was a head scratcher thinking how the tack strip would be strong enough to hold...
