I have had a 27 T for over 50 years. When we first got the car, I noticed that it would run noticeably smoother and have more power when switched over to mag. Over the years, everything on the car has been rebuilt-motor, trans, electrical system, etc. At some point it started running as well on battery as it does on mag. Is this normal for a car...

My Dad left me with about 5 T camshafts, all in numbered Iskenderian boxes but otherwise unlabeled. I want to know which cam has which grind. I have V blocks, a dial indicator, and I'm pretty sure there's a degree wheel somewhere. What do I do from there?

I have a KR Wilson Mag Tester that I've never used. It has 2 lead wires...1 on each side of the meter. Does anyone know which side attaches to the Mag post ? I assume the other is a ground ? There are no markings to identify which wire go's where.

I have an old Bosch distributor on my 20 T. I believe it is the 600 series. I am looking for a set of points and condenser for it. The condenser is kidney shaped with a stud that goes thru the wall of the distributor to hold it in place. I had a guy contact me today to work on his T. He said it was idling in his garage and heard a horrible nouse from transmision. It killed the engine. Just picked up a T wood steering wheel. It has the grooves all around the inside diameter for finger placements and is in great shape. A couple of the joints are slightly loose. Only way to deal with old dried out glue joints is to take the pieces apart, clean the old glue out, apply new glue, and clamp the joints and the circumference. Brads are not used. I picked up some 26-7 parts today and among them was a complete greasy motor and transmission assembly. The casting dates are as follows. Keep in mind that these are Canadian sourced.

Engine casting date 11/10/D, where D represents 1926.
Cylinder head casting date 11/11/D
Transmission cover casting date 12/2/D

I am putting together a order to make a run of;
1. 1/2” thick aluminum test plates that facilitate leak testing the T block and heads prior to assembly (or prior to doing ANY work). They will run about $150.00
2. Neoprene reuseable head gasgets for the same testing process. About $50.00

The KW coil box pictured was found in the back seat of a 1913 Ford Touring. The box shows traces of red paint on the front.
It does not appear to be repainted.
All the boxes I’ve seen have black and gold graphics.
Can someone identify the year of the KW box pictured?

If you will look at the top edge of your coilbox, there are traces of the original red stain. You are fortunate to have that box. Randall Andersons brother Jon can make you a new lid. I've discovered not all 1913 KW lids are interchangeable! I've probably owned a half dozen 1913 KW coil boxes over the years.

I am mounting my rear fenders on my '26 T and need to dbl-check that they are 5/16 24 bolts? I think there are 4 on each side that bolt the fender to the body. If so, is that a common size for big box retailers to carry?

Roar, yes, the VW ran with inserts and without a filter, but they didn't have transmission bands or any cast iron components doing their part to contaminate the oil.

That said, I'd still run inserts if they were available. With the limited use the car would see, oil changes every 500-700 miles aren't unreasonable.

I just replaced the timer (commutator) wiring harness on my '27. The old harness was routed under the front coil box bracket that holds the box to the head. A previous owner had put a tie wrap around the harness and the bracket to hold the harness a fraction of an inch off of the head. That's sure not the way Henry did it. Does anyone know for...

Those spots are correct for the harness clips, #7688, under the drivers side water outlet bolt, and another clip under the large hex head bolt on the timing gear cover. The correct clips have large diameter hole to fit to these large bolts.

What years did Ford use the dished high head bolt?

1924 last use, have seem most of the pocket style high head bolts in 1922-24 cylinder heads. Some of the earlier flat head types can be found with Inspector marks on the head of the bolt.

2-18-24 Redesigned, specifying threads to be rolled instead of cut. This changes the diameter of stock from .428 - .432 to .380-.384”...

Can someone post a clear photo of an improved car front axle? In the parts section a poster commented that all of the '26 and '27 Model Ts had a dip in the center of the axle. I have no reason to believe that the axle in my '27 has ever been swapped, but it doesn't appear to have a dip in it. I'm wondering if I'm not seeing something that others...

For a 1926-27 car assembled in Denmark, England etc. -- they used the DR front axle and DF wishbone but the standard style USA type front spindles. Ref: Also ref page 180 of the English Ford Book vol 1.

My parts chassis came with this APCO radius rod thingamabob. I'm assuming it's a vintage one because the chassis was last a real car that was being used sometime back in the late 50's or early 60's.

It was really crusty and seized up but I managed to free up all the bits after soaking it for a few weeks in penetrating oil. After that, it cleaned...

Preparing to remove old gas from my model T tank. What is best/safest way of disposing of the stale gas ?

I was going to mention what Original Smith said in my earlier post. Old gas works well for a cleaner. If it’s a gallon or so save it for cleaning your T parts. Get a container and let your T nuts and bolts or other small parts soak for cleaning. Anything less go pour on your fence line for edging.

The early timers seem to have the metal segments imbedded into the fiber material so one cannot physically see how much contact is remaining after machining unlike later Ford timers that the steel contact edges are visible bedded into the fiber.

I believe that due to the TT having the battery box next to the running board, the shift rod going rearward goes straight back whereas on the passenger car equipped w/electric starting equipment with the factory battery holder, the shift lever goes to the passenger side to cross over the torque tube in order to miss the battery.

You are better off just swapping ends with the axle and leaving the perches alone. Now would be a good time to make sure your spindles are not on the wrong side also. That can be dangerous.

Here is an update on my fan pulley/shaft issue. First, one of my sealed bearings went bad and had to be replaced. Why, I assume just a dud bearing? Anyway…it made the most awful “metal” noise that initially I thought was coming internally from the engine block – thankfully it wasn’t, just a bad bearing in an all but new pulley.

I just got a new Radiator from Bergs. I attempted to install a petcock i got from Snyders long ago and it will not fit.
I do not know if I should tap the radiator or try a different petcock. Snyders number A-8115-RE. It looks like a 3/8-24, but I am wondering if it is tapered toward the top. Thank you for your help.

I had taken off my floor boards to chase down an annoying squeak and was surprised to find one side of the clutch adjusting clevis broken off. I don’t remember if this was a reproduction but the original in my “parts department” was different. The broken clevis was a casting and the one I replaced it with was not. I have one of these battery cases that contain a 6v Optima battery inside, but looks like a period battery. I’d like to open the case and take the battery out for replacement, but can’t figure out how to open the case. Has anyone out there ever opened one of these?

An Optima battery will fit diagonally across a standard Model T battery box as pictured above. You will have to raise the height of the Optima so it is level with the battery box. You will also need to fabricate handles for each end if you plan to have handles for the lid.

I’m thinking that piece is off of the later Ford tractors after 1954. But then I don’t remember seeing the Ford logo on the ones I worked on. Maybe I didn’t notice. Ford made farm equipment implements for a while and I have some. They have a Ford tag riveted to the framework but the small parts don’t any Ford logo embossed on them that I’ve seen....

I riveted them, but I JB Welded only on the ends..maybe an inch in. Make sure it is all clean bare metal. I blasted my metal and taped the ends so they would remain bare after painting. I riveted them on and pulled gently up on the ends, smeared JB Weld in, and clamped them. Then I ground the the ends at a taper when it was all dry, so the drum...

Something has gotten out of adjustment on our '21 Touring. To keep it from slipping in high gear I now find that I must hold pressure forward on the lever with my left foot. It didn't use to be that way. I will have to look into that! :?

I just rebuilt my generator and was wondering when I set the third brush do I hook the ammeter wire directly to the output post bypassing my fun projects regulator?

This is the Model T instruction.

Note: If you have a 26/27 reproduction ammeter it is not accurate enough to perform this procedure. You can place an older style or other more accurate ammeter in line between the VR and harness battery wire to make the third brush adjustment.

Does anybody know what bulb is used for the pilot lamp on a Yankee 960 turn signal switch? This is for 6V. It's a smaller base than BA15s but I don't know if it's a BA9s or something different. I think Yankee and Signal Stat would be the same, I'm just not familiar with them.

I just put a TT truck back on the road but I have problems with the tires.
The tires are plain rubber.
On the front they are 30 x 3-1/2.
On the rear the rubber is so far gone I can't find any indication on them.

I think it should be 33 x 5 but I need to be sure before ordering any new tires.

How can I identify these tires?
