The below link to a Model T engine on ebay is advertised as being “rebuilt,” but by my standards (and many others) this is not clearly not a rebuilt short block. Whomever buys this engine with the understanding that it was “rebuilt” will be greatly disappointed. At best, this might fall into the category of a “semi-refreshed” engine. New babbitt...

Years ago when Model T engines and Model A engines were still fairly plentiful you could go to a swap meet or at auctions and come across mostly complete engines, clean them up and replace worn out or missing parts and have a decent running engine.
In the 70’s and not having much money I built up a good engine from the remains of three.

I’m replacing my top material on a 1916 roadster. Looking for proper measurements between top bows before I attach the stretchers. The old top had measurements of 18 1/2” between inside rear bow and inside center bow, and 26” inside center bow to inside front bow.
Any ideas on what is correct? Does anyone have an original top that they could...

Thanks to Dan for the response. That will help me get it done, with the key being a vertical center bow. I think I may have to resort to subterfuge next time I post a question in order to get fellow T’ers to at least open my post. Do you think something titled “Look what I stepped in” would be popular?

As a FYI, while doing the clutch adjustment, do not be surprised if the clevis needs to grow in length, and do not be surprised if you are at the tip-end of adjustment when you're done. This is a very common issue that is left undone by a great majority of service persons.

I am planning on removing the brake band to inspect the lining due to some brake chattering I’m dealing with right now. I am not used to replacing quick change bands but when I put this car back together I installed them because I didn’t want to go through removing a hogs head unless I absolutely have to. So my first question is how do you keep...

Thank you all for the help with my band change which I appreciate very much, as much as I hate to do it, I will pull the engine out and make a complete inspection of the interior of the engine because of all the fiber debris I have found. I am sure the oil return to the main needs cleaning as well as the outside oil return tubing. I will also...

I have a '24 coupe and the window regulators (risers) are basically frozen. My Model T Doctor tells me that the only quality replacements are for the last years '26 and '27. For earlier closed cars there is little available, the replacements are Chinese junk and the parts needed are simply not available. Surely somebody in the world does early...

The window regulator in my car that was rusted stuck and rusted up was the 17200dx that’s show in the post that Rich Eagle posted. That’s the one I took apart and repaired. I just bought a brand new radiator from Berg's. It was delivered today! It looks really nice. You can tell the quality is very high. Just finished talking with Gery. He has a radiator in stock for me. Dealers are 6-8 weeks out. He informed me that he makes his radiators just a bit short because the shrouds eat into the neck. He advised me to install a piece of leather between the shroud and the radiator to protect it from rubbing. He also advised me NOT to use a motometer....

Like it. I use exhaust wrap on my T-uner. I can drive around at Interstate speeds for an hour, stop and touch the wrap without fear of leaving my skin on the manifold. There is an advantage of increased engine efficiency in using it too. You get more horsepower (>.1hp) because the wrap will keep exhaust heat in the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe...

Harold, You answered your own question. The 1st Ford chassis was mainly designed for use as a Touring Car. The smaller 30 x 3 tires were cheaper than the 30 x 3.5 tires, and the weight on the front axle was less than it was on the back when loaded. With the back seat loaded with maybe three people the load on the rear axle was more. As Ford's...

I would suggest you check for slop in the ends of the wire that runs from the steering column to the commutator.' If there's slop at either end, your test...

Hey,
How many of y'all are following the youtube channel of the Model t fords group crossing USA from ocean to ocean?
They are 16 days in, I think the lady filming said it is a 30 day trip.
Very cool
Thanks

It was good to see Kirk Hill on the video. He has the 14 roadster on the trip. I haven’t seen him much the past few years but he’s the friend that got me started in t modeling. He is an awesome person as well as a great Model T mechanic. He was my mentor and I’ll always be thankful for his guidance and friendship.

Can't really help on flashers, haven't added those before. I just use the bicycle remote style lamp, wireless control on the steering wheel, pen size replaceable battery, the lamp mounts on the tire carrier, you see these type chevron flashers on bicycles all the time. Use that PLUS hand signals!

Experiencing a problem keeping the exhaust pipe in the muffler. Presently have a stainless steel muffler on the 26. Open question for forum members. Do you use a muffler clamp or, have the exhaust pipe float inside the muffler connection?
Last post
I've found the vendor pipes to be satisfactory, but at times the original curves are missed by the modern pipe bending machines, that leave a crease in the bend. At times, I have had to shorten the pipe, as it was too long.
BTY, the exhaust pipe and muffler are on only one frame rail, they move with it, the two frame rails may twist in relation...

If you need an oversize cam gear, I have a pretty good assortment of them in stock. Not sure what you mean that your bronze gear is undersize unless it was a special that we intentionally cut undersize for some reason in the past. Engine Locked Then Free

Bit of a head-scratcher tonight: I gave my T two pulls on choke to prime it, noting nothing unusual other than a little wheezing through the #4 plug threads, then hit the switch and went to pull it for a start. To my surprise the engine was locked up tight. No give, no play, just zero rotation. I gave it a good, smooth pull as hard as I could and...
Last post
The description of the lockup was one of hand cranking...no starter involved. It cannot be the bendix if the starter was not energised. There seems to be both crucial information missing from the starting sequence, and large assumptions that the starter was involved during a hand crank - a fact that I do not discern in the description.

Thanks for all the suggestions y'all. I had it off while I put a new cam and reset the valves. There was a bit of 'gunk' sitting in the bottom of the lower spout. I suspect the cores are quite dirty.

This question is asked of those who have a lot of experience under their belt.
How many hours should it take to re-assemble a T short block AFTER all machining has
been completed. I ask this question so as to get a better idea of the cost
involved. I have taken the engine completely apart and will pay seperately to have
the babbitting done. I...
Last post
I usually get all the babbitt work done by Antique Engine and valves etc by Mesa machine shop in Escondido. Then final assembly can take 10-20 hours but I find setting up the magneto can add another 4-8 if it’s difficult. Much easier with a distributor. All depends if the bands need work or if the transmission needs work, that can easily double...

I'm finally getting around to painting my luggage rack. I still had a quart each of rusty metal printer and gloss black enamel. Both from Rustoleum. I've already sprayed the primer (5:2 with acetone). Normally, for brush application, they recommend 24 hours before recoating or top coating. I'm wondering what effect the acetone does to the cure...
Last post
Don’t be in a hurry. If it takes a week to dry, wait a week. If you can smell it, it is not fully cured. If you try and recoat before it is dry, the underlying coat may alligator, which will entail removing all the paint and starting over from scratch, so waiting a little longer may actually shorten the job by you not having to do it over by...

If you want to watch the daily video's go to youtube and type in SweetTing. You might have to play around to see all of them, but they are there. It looks like everyone has made it this far. Now all they have to do is get over the mountains. I think it was the day before yesterday that they drove about 270 miles. Try that in your car.

Last post
If it runs in reverse, but not forward, the problem is not in the parking brake. The brake would work in either direction. If you have Rocky Mountain brakes, you might be too tight. In that case the rearward movement tends to disengage the Rocky Brakes, but forward will tighten them. So you might need to adjust them. Another thing, (this might...

The late original Ruckstell shift levers are splined. These are problem Eaton. They can be adjusted anywhere you want them. I would never use the floorboard plate that Dan Posted. Ruckstell never made them. You only need a hole that's big enough for the shift lever.

I'm currently rebuilding my rear end and using Chaffins manual. I'm wondering why there wasn't a shim selection chart ever made so you would know what size shim to install under the ring gear. Meaning, if you had .030 backlash between ring and pinion, what size shim would you need to get .012
Last post
If the bronze thrust washers are machined to the correct thickness, there is no need for shims. If the clearance is not that which is desired, it can be altered by shuffling the steel discs from side to side. Once the desired clearance is achieved, the right half and its washers can be assembled, the gap between the housings measured, and the...
