If The truck can still be driven, the poor boy or old farmer solution was to loosen the axle nut about three turns, replace the cotter pin (so it can not vibrate off all the way) and drive the truck over a bumpy road or driveway kind of fast. A short trip will usually loosen the drum.

A good way to fix a loose pulley is to coat the inside with a liberal coat of tin solder (50/50). Tap it into place, any high spots in the tinning will self cut to size. No shimming, and will last for years.

I need to replace one incorrect headlight bar bolt on my '27 with the correct carriage bolt. The issue is that I don't know whether the nuts are supposed to be square or hex. You don't need square or eight-point sockets for square nuts. Regular 12-point sockets work just fine. I installed a new carriage bolt and square nuts on the driver's side today with a 12-point socket. I was amazed that my local Ace Hardware store stocks square nuts!

When you tighten the cylinder up with a piston/ring replacement you will increase compression, (providing the cylinder is round) and put more strain on the lower end (rod journals). When installing the welting on your door panels the edge of the welting lifts giving an unfinished look. Lay some masking tape along the lifted edge so you dont get any glue on the door panel then apply some black weather strip adhesive with a toothpick in the crease, press it closed and put another piece of tape to hold it tight until it dries....

Most vibration problems of the Model T originate in the engine. Various parts of Modern engines, ie, crankshaft, pistons, rods, caps, etc., are balanced for the maximum performance with a minimum of vibration. What can be done during the rebuilding phase of the Model T engine to balance the various parts to keep vibration at a minimum. Is there a...

I think just balancing the parts alone are a big factor. Once you seem to balance the rods and pistons, and flywheel, that should cure alot of it. I am going to have my machine shop dynamically electronic balance my whole assembly with the crank (like they do for hi performance engines). My big block Chevy engine was balanced to within .09 of a...

While that top installation looks great, most of the evidence points to fold over welting being used, not hide-em. Minor detail, but thought you might like to know.

If you get it printed, it has to be true, right? This is a 1904 ad. The first gasoline autos were Lambert 1890 , Duryea 1893, Haynes 1894. pretty sure there are more sprinkled in there. If you believe this ad, Henry’s was 1889, but really he was a late comer. 53497E76-0E79-4D33-A9B5-91327B5C97F6.jpeg 72210CA3-CAD9-4A0C-8C3E-014CCD2CE51C.jpeg

I was doing a little research on TTs and had a bit of challenge finding things.
First I went the the MTFCA online Encyclopedia. Great resource, but I am not finding the TT info. (Also on the production numbers I don't see pickups listed: I assume the truck is TT though.)
I did find the following thread helpful even though measurements are metric...
Last post
The Pickup started in the 1925 Model year so may be counted in the runabout/roadster listing. Truck would/should be TT only. What it boils down to, the more popular body styles (touring, coupe and runabouts) get the most research. 2 doors, 4 doors not so much. TT's even less. Good luck with your search.

Chad, if you have new bushes and cams, and new lined shoes, and you still have no good emergency brake, I would be looking for worn brake drums. The cheap fix usually is to fit a shim on the cam to spread the shoes somewhat. With all new parts at that point, your brake drums are allowing the shoes to expand beyond the effective range of the cam....

I was reassembling a 1925 engine with a 4 dip oil pan. It was hard to put a few bolts in it but in a way I get them all in and tide.
Tried to turn the motor but it didn't turn any more. Looking for the reason I found that the oil pan was touching the coil ring and that the coil ring blocked the magnets on the flywheel.
Disassembled it and saw a...

Just get an other oil pan ready.
This time I tried the alignement before the definitive assembly.
The end bearing just slide on and the bolts went in by hand.
I think I am back on the road.
What will be next???????

Once upon a time, every British breakdown lorry had a Harvey Frost crane on the back - HF did lifting gear. I bought this HF Ford Jack at Beaulieu (our answer to Hershey) in September 1994. Thereby hangs a tale:-

Today I tried to install and adjust my New Day timer. First off I'd like to know if what I've done looks right, then I have a little problem to discuss and a possible solution if you agree.
Following info I found on this forum, I did the following:
1.Identified Cyl # 1
2.Turned the crank until the crank pin was in the 3:30 / 9:30 Position -...

On an initial set up with a new timer, I park the timer pull at 5 o'clock on our RHD cars. For your up side down timers that would be 11 0'clock. The adjustment to the linkage rod is then made with the lever set against the stop on the quadrant. This works for all types of timers other than one of the new Andersons. I can't remember if thit needed...

I could swear that I saw a discussion recently about the details of a turn signal wiring diagram. I can't image that it would have been anywhere but here. Today, I was talking to a Model T friend with wiring problems and I told him I'd send him a link to that discussion. I can't find it. Did I dream it?

Interesting for me Adrian! Thank you for poking at me! :) True.
Makes me wonder how I wire the 12V earth return (or the power flow out if you believe that) from the down converter on that side of the 84 volt vehicles we build as the brain plate may be more isolated from the chassis than I think. Hmmm.
I may see some 12V grounding problems down the...

I'm doing research for a digital illustration to be set along the Erie Canal after the turn of the 20th century. APCO Cap....Springs Needed or Not?

I'm about to install a cleaned up vintage APCO radius rod cap, with a new inner spring and cup, on my car.
Does the APCO unit need the two mounting springs like a stock cap does?
Last post
I can certainly understand leaving the springs off, but do NOT skip the step of wiring the bolts in place. To do so, you'll need bolts with wire holes drilled through the heads. Do NOT substitute split lock washers in place of the wire.

Years ago I read of a boy aged ten driving a Model T from Tulsa to New York city with his seven-year-old brother as passenger. I wonder if anybody here is familiar with the story. I've been trying to recall where I read it, but that was before this week, so of course I can't.

That was the Abernathy Brothers, and it was done in 1910 to meet their father Jack's old friend, Teddy Roosevelt in NYC. They rode horses from OK to NY, but it was real hard on them (the horses, not the kids) so they bought the Brush and drove it home. A few years later in 1912 n0r 13? they duplicated the stunt on Indian motorcycles.

Cam shaft seal

For years I fitted the seals supplied by the vendors and we all know that the have too smaller OD and need to be glued/sealed in place.
So the million dollar question is, why have we been putting up with them when I simply walked into our local bearing store and bought the right size to fit in??
Last post
I remember that when Milt Webb first proposed using a neoprene seal on the camshaft, he mentioned that it needed a little squeeze between two bits of wood in the vice to swell the outer circumference. I usually do that and add a little black silicone seal. It may not be perfect but it’s worked for me for close to forty years.

I just tried to install a gooseneck for my spare tire on my 1920 touring. The holes in the gooseneck do not line up with the U-bolts. Since the U-bolts fit in the crossmember I cannot move them outwards. I assumed the cross members would be about the same. Should not assume things.
Any suggestions? If you did it on your car, do you have a photo...

Lang’s catalog in their horn section has a repair service for your horn. Don’t know what the cost is but maybe they still do it. The add says your horn will be rebuilt with new electronic parts but sounds exactly like the original.
