I am assembling a 26 transmission. Have on hand a good driving plate with the exception of some scouring on the ball cap / 4th main contact area. I have a crankshaft grinder so it isn’t a huge job to turn the bearing contact area underside.
Which will mean an increase in the Babbitt thickness in the ball cap.
I estimate the diameter will be about...
Last post
Dave:
the reduced diameter on the driveplate and thicker babbitt in ball cap should not be a problem ... i have seen drive plates ground to 1.500 diameter and there is a variety of ballcap types with babbitt lining from probably .030 per side to around 1/4 per side ... i believe the 1.500 was to fit a ball bearing ball cap ...gene french

The in-line fuel filter can be ditched with a new stainless steel tank. They are notorious for restricting flow on gravity feed systems like the T. Yours even appears to be fitted backwards to my eye. Usually the fuel is fed into the canister and then through the paper filter, before heading to the carby.

Steering column shaft flange that the planetary gear posts mount

How is the flange that holds the posts where the planetary gears mount attached to the shaft? I ask because we’re trying to shorten the shaft by a few inches and if that flange is a keyed press fit &/or pinned it would seem the easiest route instead of machining the bottom of the shaft. That would involve a lot more work to do. We’ve thought about...

Assuming no drawing available - or easier than using a drawing even if you had one:
before cutting, the original shaft can be set up and trued in the lathe. At this point the compound or taper attachment can be set up to trace the original taper to 0 deviation. This will be pretty much dead nuts for a setup.
everything below is just bonus...

How to modify new wiper for 26-7 Coupe?
I bought what was available, knowing that it is not a direct fit. Has anyone extended the shank to work on a Coupe?

Be sure to set up some sort of guide when drilling the windscreen frame. The hole .needs to be perpendicular to the glass. On my Henrietta it was way off so the wiper was less than efficient. I had to hand file the hole oversize and square on. I fitted a custom bronze bushing and sealed it both ends with black RTV to keep water out of the screen...

Does anyone have an alternator on their T? Buckeye sells them and states this on their website about them:
The 12-volt version is capable of 80 amp output; the 6-volt version is capable of 40-amp output
Model T's only have 12 AWG wiring in the charging circuit... and its 100 year old wiring to boot, nowhere near the ability to handle that kind...

I have to agree with Larry on this one. For around 200 bucks you can replace every wire on the car. Hopefully Jeff’s article on wiring safety will be in the Vintage Ford soon.

It is my understanding that up until 1910 or early 1911, Ford would use the engine serial number as the car number that was stamped onto the firewall patent plate, and by 1911 or so it got to be too much of a pain to keep that coordinated, so the numbers no longer matched.

Re your '14, my '14 body plate & engine # are also far off, but it's also my understanding that there was no correlation at that point.

With the Holidays over and the bitter cold days of Winter dragging along, time to start thinking about Model T activities again. I've been told the Ol Model T Coil Beepers are in short supply and folks wanting one can't get one. If your not familiar with it, the Coil Beeper is a handy little device popular at swap meets to test Model T coil...

Just holding that test set on a coil for a few seconds should make the battery last for years, so it is not likely to be a problem.
Making the device that thin takes a lot of talent!

Ok, here comes the can of worms…. I am going to put new linings on the bands for my 26 speedster and it sounds like I will be getting into the bands on my 22 as well. I have full sets of Kevlar and good cotton bands for both. I like the longevity of the Kevlar, but I also like the lowered risk of transmission damage from the cotton. Anyone running...

Are there any opinions on how long a 6 Volt Group 1 Battery should live, if it is seldom used, but left in the vehicle, or which battery is the best??

The Optimas are clean, lightweight, and long-lasting. They probably don't have the reserve capacity of a big wet cell battery, but they can give a short burst of high current, which makes them an excellent starting battery. I believe that any type battery used in a Model T could be expected to last longer if the car was equipped with an accessory...

1925 Ford Pickup
by
Original Smith » Tue Nov 18, 2025 12:44 pm
On the back cover of the current Model T Times, is probably the rarest 1925 Ford in existence. I most likely was sold new as a non starter model. If you look through the L R spokes, it appears there is a battery. I have only seen one example of a 1925 non starter car in 60 years in this hobby. Note the wheels are non demountable, with 30 X 3's in...

Today I spoke to the manufacturer of Model T Ford ignition coil point sets and supplies them to Model T parts vendors.
As reported in mid-September the supplier of the four basic coil point stampings is still having problems sourcing the raw brass and steel to make these parts. At this time, there is no delivery date for the material needed.

Heat shield between exhaust and floorboard?
What is anyone using?
I have plenty of scrap stainless I'm thinking about using.

Stock or near stock Model T engines don't need high octane fuel. Using it will cause no harm and give no benefit. Ethanol-free gasoline may cause slightly higher exhaust temperatures due to its slightly higher BTU content, but I doubt there would be any practical effect other than slightly more power and fuel efficiency. It's difficult to...

I just picked up some Model T parts and there were 4 23 inch rims but they have 5 lugs. One of the rims has a Buffalo Cord Dunlop 31X4 smooth tire on it. Are these for Model T rims? All the Model t wheels i have are 4 lug
Last post
Definitely not for T models, on two counts. Ford always used four lug rims. Secondly, the only split rims Ford did use were 21' rims on the 26-7 cars.

A new drum is only part of the story. The outer diameter of the driven plate forms part of the brake drum surface. Is a new driven plate available to match the new drums? If not, a new drum will mean a step down to the worn OD of the driven plate, not an ideal situation for the band lining.
Before new drums were available, I used to have the...

While rubber washers at these points were not original, someone in the past probably installed rubber washers at each bolt hole to try and silence vibration noise wherever metal to metal contact occurs. The theory is sound but rubber washers would have a tendency to keep the fasteners from being tightened as much as necessary and eventually start...

Looks like someone already tried that. The rod bearings will not hold up if they are not fit correctly on a shaft that is in good condition.

REO yes....., Ford no. You must anneal the rounded brass or you will kink it. You think Henry Ford would have added extra steps in that? Flat can be slapped with a mallet with a light edge support.

They are a custom hot rolled steel profile that gets rolled to mate up to each rim diameter. 2 profiles are traditionally available, “heavy” for the larger cars, and “light” for our more nimble autos.
