Do not know why the first pic is shown twice.

I usually assemble with the springs nearly fully compressed. The thought being, that if the wishbone gets yanked forward, the springs will not be able to further compress enough to allow the ball to come out of the socket. You only need to see that happen once in order to guard against it.
Agreed.

For what it's worth, no one drive their model T more or as hard as I do. A recent engine problem on our return trip from Canada caused me to have to disassemble the engine in old #4. 1. Is this an after market addition.

The horn has worked perfectly for years.

How do you measure ring gap?
Put the rings in the cylinder one at a time and check where the ends meet with a feeler gauge?
Yes. Use an upside down piston to ensure it is square in the bore.

I think what you are experiencing is the more accurate firing a new day gives.

IMHO the new day is the best off the shelf timer. But with that comes the need for a seal & make sure your cam isnt prone to...

Hey all,

This afternoon I started to install the new ring gear with new right bolts.

I looked to the brake surface. Here is what I found.
A new ring gear is ordered. Hope this...
Last post
Check the hardness of the ring gear with a file. A ring gear should not be so hard that you cannot file the edge of a tooth. Those look like brittle failures, which a hard gear might cause. Just something to easily check.

Hello all,
I’ve been a frequent lurker and infrequent poster for a long while now. Months ago, I made the choice to pull the engine on my car. The magneto on top you can see that the coating is broken off a little. Should I put something on it? Also while I'm here fishing out an aluminum cotter pin from the bottom what else should I do while the hogs head is off?

LittleTimmy52,
There is an oil tube inside the engine with the funnel right below the magneto to direct oil to the timing gears and Rod & Main #1.
The best way to clean it is to remove the front cover and blow back from the front to make sure it is clear.
But on an assembled engine this is not very practical.
So look between the magnets towards...

It is summertime & the weather is hot, time for me to stretch some older 30 x 3 1/2 tires to mount for a roller chassis. I am looking for the mounted size car tire to use to stretch the old tire I had seen it in years back on the Forum but have not found it today. I believe it was like 165/75/14 or maybe 175/75/14?

It took me four weeks to stretch a set of 5 new old stock Olympic BE tyres. They had been well stored in the dark, but had shrunk almost 2 in circumference over some 50 years. My friendly tyre fitter set me up with four different rim/tyre combinations of differing diameters. I started with the smallest one and progressed up the series every second...

I would get an accurate, dial type tire gauge and put 28 PSI (cold) in all four tires. That is plenty of pressure for a late T coupe with starter and battery on balloon tires.

Do any of you have experience with one?
Are they accurate?
Any recommendations for or against installing one?

I liked the old style steel quart oil cans... but the liquor bottle style plastic quarts are easier to store in a car. There is a hole in the rear axle housing where the bushing for the brake cam goes. It looks like it is for oiling the bushing. Was there an oiler for this? It seems like oiling this would allow oil into the inside of the brake drum, but who knows.

Yes an oiler goes there. Only a couple of squirts of oil will fit. I have never had a problem with oil and the parking brake.

I had the same thoughts about making repairs. A prominent collector told me not to do so. It can devalue a good original sign. Besides, on this one it looks like two nails were driven through the bottom to mount it some way, so the panel itself would need repair, possibly extending the damage in the process.

1909 Camshaft Bearings...
by

Does anybody know what these look like? I know what the rear one looks like and the middle one, but the front one (according to catalogs) is for 24-27....so, is the 1909 front bearing different than this later one?
Also need to know which way the bearing clip goes, at the moment I've got it drawn on the top side of the bearing, because this puts...

Went to the Nonnowaug Car show today. My daughter and son in law brought the 12. My wife and I took the 11.

The fore doors were attached when I purchased it. I removed them because I wanted an open front car. I then got the 11.

Bridge Washers

The current bridge washer offerings are not made correctly. They got the thickness and shape correct, but didn't do the stamping correctly. Why? There is a round stamping around the stem hole to help the bridge washer seat on the tube. Is there anyone anywhere, that is capable of doing this?
Last post
Larry,
It is not that they are reproducing the bridge washers wrong, it is that those bridge washers are made for modern truck tire inner tubes, not Model A's or Model T's. They may be similar, but they are not the same, and as people are finding, they do not fit the original clamp on style metal stems or tires.

Well, I thought all 1911-13 front hubs were the same until I gathered my small stash of these hubs on my workbench to clean them up and chase the hubcap threads getting them ready for possible sale. One thing I noticed is that when the hubs were placed hubcap side down on the table not all were the same! A few had two cutout notches for easier...

Charge it off the magneto with a diode and a tail light bulb. or buy the magneto charger kit from one of the vendors. Can also use it for coil power when cranking for more spark till you switch over to mag.

Does anyone know what the procedure is for drilling a hole in safety glass to install a through the windshield spotlight? Can it be done without taking the glass out of the frame? Should I take it to a glass shop?
Last post
Automotive tempered glass is odd stuff. It can be very difficult to break. I locked my keys in a 2004 GMC pickup, and used a 24 pipe wrench to attempt to break the passenger door window with no success. I swung the wrench at the window several times, which left marks on the glass but did not break it. The commotion attracted a kid, who was willing...

I'm so excited. I've wanted a Model T fire truck for 40 years. This is a 1924 Howe body on a 1925 TT chassis. What year model truck would y'all consider this to be. 24 or 25?

I had a friend of mine who is a fireman looked over my firetruck. He was very knowledgeable about the trucks and the way they were used. He says that the tanks are for water to prime the system in order to start sucking (drafting) water from a water hole. He showed me how all the valves were used to make everything work. So to answer your...

Sorry if this a duplicate thread but I couldn't find another.
We will be there. Lots of T parts and other pre-war stuff.
If you've visited us before behind the old stadium, we're in new spaces this year - RWD 23-27.
And if you've visited us in Chickasha in years past, we'll continue to have all of our $1, $5, $10, $20 and priced as marked tables....

I actually thought about going as I haven't been there since 2008. Sadly at 80 I know it would be impossible for me to cover it.

Do I need a battery shut-off on my car? When I got my '28 A 4 years ago it came with one. The car was restored around 10 years ago and the wiring is good. One day I did leave the switch 'on' and it ran the battery down. My fault. There is a draw somewhere that needs fixing, then. Out of all the many old cars I've owned, this is the only one that...

A good switch will give reliable service. A keyed switch is good security, and a fuse in the feed wire is good insurance.
A relay setup will help prevent some starter troubles by assuring a positive connection and assure long life for your stock starter switch. Your car; your choice. If I had young children around a Model T, I'd seriously consider...

About a month ago I took my 1914 Touring car for a nice 100ish mile run. Ran beautifully. I stopped by a friends place to give him and his family a ride. I am always surprised by how much the weight of a few people, or even just one passenger effects the performance....

you mentioned that you had good strong spark when plugs are out of the car but no spark when IN the car

This morning I went out to adjust my low band, from above. Of course I had to remove the mat, and floorboards. It took me about 30 seconds to adjust the low band, but what happened is I wound up holding field day on everything I could see! Oh well, it needed it.

Another excellent edition of Vintage Ford arrived yesterday. On pages 40-41 the author describes how to make a three-inch-long extension for torquing head bolts near the firewall. He concludes the article by saying No, the added 3 does not change the amount of torque applied. No explanation is given, but it seems to me this extension could...
Last post
Since half the time forum members can’t agree on torque specs it’s probably not a big deal.
Andy
Torque spec aside, wouldn't a simple solution be to use the extension when tightening ALL of the headbolts, not just the headbolts near the firewall? Wouldn't that guarantee uniformity?
