Drag link cap question

Edit: solved, I had the drag link rod backwards so the worn side was on the tie rod when it was to be the less worn side. After flipping it around and putting the spring cap back on the other side it's fine now.
On the end that goes to the ball on the tie rod was there a different shorter spring loaded cap? I have a new pitman arm but s worn...

The real issue is you need to do some front end work.
A series of partial patches isnt the answer.
I did, that's how I had the link rod on backwards. My front end came mostly apart, new bushings we installed I painted the springs with graphite, I put new wheel seals on the hubs repacked everything and replaced the pitman arm. I got the car...

Hood Support Rod Moving

First post
My hood support rod keeps moving rearward. It only takes about 10 miles of driving for the rod to slide off off the cradle on the radiator. Is this normal? Is there a common fix?
Last post
Here is how i fixed it: remove the rod and grind a depression into it about 1/2 inch from where it disappears into the center hinge. Then reinstall it and place a small dent into the underside of the hood hinge right at the spot where the depression is. It now stays put and can be removed later if needed. Problem solved.

Good Stuff! I usually like to keep my stuff as authentic as possible, however, I have a perfect replacement for the 777 valve stem. It's still a Schrader, but as noted above is 1/4 shorter. The valve stem is an 888. It uses the same bridge washer and nut. The reason I prefer this 888 is that most likely reduces the weight of the valve stem.

The valve stem size is more related to the tire and tube size than mfg. of the auto.
Period adv. of the 1915 Jeffery list tire as 34 x 4.
Here is a period chart showing the valve stem size recommended for tire larger than 3 . The 725 size would be correct.

Marty, are you wanting to do the entire seat or just the cushions? Are you wanting it in leather or vinyl??
If Mike doesn't do it, we can do it in my shop. We are doing a frameup restoration a 1935 ALF for a municipality down near Gatlinburg and just finished sewing theirs in leather. I can send pix for reference if you like.

I am looking at a 25 T coupe for myself and i happened to notice that it had 21 inch tires like a 26 27 wire wheel but it's a demountable rim on a wood wheel. i know it might seem like a stupid question but most wood wheels i've seen on T's were 23 or 24 inch wheels. was this a later wheel used on late 25 cars?

New metal stem inner tube question

Do new Hartford 30x3-1/2 metal-stem inner tubes from Coker need bridge washers and nuts? Or can they be used like rubber stem tubes?
The old hardware has different threads and does not not fit the new tube stems.
It looks like the new tubes have the stems vulcanized, so is there a need for the bridge washers and nuts?

With brass stems in tubes, new or old replacements, a rusted thin original valve stem hole in the rim is of no real concern. I would be concerned with an abraded down to fit rubber stem being used in such a rim. Tyre shops stock plastic sleeves use to adapt different size holes to different stems. I have used these on rusted thin stem holes in T...

My first go around with putting original metal stems into a modern tube. What’s the best way to pull the old brass core out now that I’ve cut off most of the rubber valve stem? There’s a fair bit to grab on to but it’s bonded to the tube very well. Wanted to ask the experts before I goof.
Last post
I leave the rubber stem stem intact when making the cut around the base. As mentioned, that leaves you something to grip when working the base out of the tube after making the cut. I also make the cut 1/8 or so up from the bottom as shown in the last photo. You may have to 'Work' the cut stem to break the last contact on the brass core to get it...

I recently came across these remnants of a carbide generator.

Is it just showing the effects of age and brass cracking from the spinning process? I have seen other pieces of brass get this way, but not to the extent this one has suffered. It looks shredded.

I believe that is the effect of 100+ year old spun brass that has been exposed to the elements.
The upper chamber is the water reservoir. The lower chamber would have had the acetylene gas.

The starter does not turn the engine very well at all, even after battery is fully charged or placing the battery charger in starter mode .
Most of the time, I use the hand crank. Ya'll toad me about the starter already in this older post:

That was a nice eastern king snake in the transmission. Keep it, they eat venomous serpents for supper.
Absolutly agree, he has migrated over to the tbird and most mornings I can find him on the trunk just soaking up some warmth. My son wants to pick him up and play but I've told him leave him alone, we want him to be happy here

I have a leak at the bottom of the bowl where the drain plug is. I have replaced the gasket and it still leaks. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. With the price of gas I’m going broke.

Mark's comment reminds me that replacement float valves in particular were notorious for the too-hard gaskets that came with them. I made a better one with gasket paper. This is separate from the other common float valve problem of too small an opening which leads to fuel starvation.

Time to let my original 1916 go to a new owner. It’s a great original with history back to the original owner. The top can’t be lowered and visibility it really challenging in a coupelet, where I live is just to busy. The decal in the window is well over 100 years old. Hate to see it go, but it’s going to a good home.

A beautiful car. My desire is to one day own a Coupelet. Was the original top to fragile to lower? a great feature of the Coupelet is lower the top for a Roadster feel on a nice day. Top up all other days. Best of both worlds for my wife and I!

Should you be working on an original switch, do not assume the 6-32 screws that hold the brass plate on are the correct length. Try one gently to make sure it will work properly. I had a NOS switch that I decided to upgrade with a nicer looking plate. The screws were a tad too long, and pulled out the inserts. with messed up the whole switch....

I took everything off to get the hogs head out. The starter, all the nuts and bolts and I disconnected the packnut on the exhaust. The hogs head is up off the gasket it's not stuck down, but I can't lift it off, it hits the engine, there's not enough space to lift it out. Am I doing something wrong? Also do I need to take the whole exhaust out or...

23” Demountable Felloe Question
Replies: 1
by
Tadpole » Fri Jun 13, 2025 6:35 am
First post
Searched through previous posts and was cornfused, so here we go again.
The straight sided felloe will take both Hayes 2845B and Ford 2845B rims? And the rolled side felloe will only take the Ford 2845B?
Last post
The rolled side felloe also has a depression in the rolled edge to accommodate the lug foot on a Hayes rim. Hayes felloes have that depression, and will take Hayes rims and other fixed lug rims. A Hayes rim will not fit if there is no depression.

The hood shelves on my 1915 (which should be painted black) have the hood latches on the outboard ends and the 1/4 carriage bolt that anchors in through the top and bottom channel of the frame are on the inside.

On my brass era speedster, the latches are (inboard) where the anchor bolts typically would be, and the anchors...
Last post
Outboard is the standard fitment. The large holes in the frame are there to facilitate the removal of the shelves without having to dis-assemble the hood hooks and springs from the shelves. Who knows what the speedster builders were thinking.

For the gasket I bought a sheet of cork material from the local tractor store. I traced the valve cover and cut the material to fit. Still working on the engine rebuild, so I haven't run it yet.
FWIW, my valve cover, valve chest cover and intake block off plate are the reproduction aluminum parts. They were true rough castings (rough and warped)....
