Pressure testing blocks.

I thought some might be interested in how we pressure test model T’s. Every block and head that comes out of here goes through this. It’s very simple to do but it has prevented quite a few flawed parts from being sent out the door only to cause problems later.
Last post
There is a plate made that has cutouts for the valves and clys for sale at a vendor. Let’s you look at the top of block or head while you test it. Dan

Radiator petcock issue

DHort » Mon Jul 15, 2019 6:15 pm

I just got a new Radiator from Bergs. I attempted to install a petcock i got from Snyders long ago and it will not fit.
I do not know if I should tap the radiator or try a different petcock. Snyders number A-8115-RE. It looks like a 3/8-24, but I am wondering if it is tapered toward the top. Thank you for your help.
Last post
David, that non original petcock looks to have a slotted head screw to hold the turning piece in place. That is the problem with the early original style petcocks. If that screw comes loose, the petcock can/will open and there goes the fluid. When this happened on my 1912 van, I wired it shut; ugly but effective. I have since jetisoned the...

France and I on an evening drive in Rochester, NY. A nice view of the city from the Ford Street Bridge.

Even though it seems really close I was ok at that light. It’s a long duration at that spot and not a cross street, just a yield one coming from the right and no one was there. Driving in the city is a very different experience than out in the country in a model T, you really have to be on your toes. As far as the chatter, yes I would say it’s 95...

Cast vs forged clutch clevis

I had taken off my floor boards to chase down an annoying squeak and was surprised to find one side of the clutch adjusting clevis broken off. I don’t remember if this was a reproduction but the original in my “parts department” was different. The broken clevis was a casting and the one I replaced it with was not. Just shows that every so often...
Last post
Steve, I agree the broken piece is earlier. I do not know when the rolled steel type were introduced. However, I believe this broken one is a cast reproduction, rather than an original forging. A forging will bend considerably before it will fail. This one shows no distortion before the failure, just a clean break. The nut and L piece also look...

Opening a Fake 6v battery case

I have one of these battery cases that contain a 6v Optima battery inside, but looks like a period battery. I’d like to open the case and take the battery out for replacement, but can’t figure out how to open the case. Has anyone out there ever opened one of these?
Last post
An Optima battery will fit diagonally across a standard Model T battery box as pictured above. You will have to raise the height of the Optima so it is level with the battery box. You will also need to fabricate handles for each end if you plan to have handles for the lid.

I just rebuilt my generator and was wondering when I set the third brush do I hook the ammeter wire directly to the output post bypassing my fun projects regulator?
Last post
This is the Model T instruction.
Note: If you have a 26/27 reproduction ammeter it is not accurate enough to perform this procedure. You can place an older style or other more accurate ammeter in line between the VR and harness battery wire to make the third brush adjustment.

If the nut routine shows that the knob may indeed be in there, yet is not...

I was driving around in the T last night and felt something small fall on my left foot. It was dark and I didn’t know what it was. My car came with the Winfield SR. It was in pretty bad shape. It leaked, the float wasn’t set correctly, the linkage was messed up. And the car ran like crap. I just bought one a while back, Langs sells them.
On mine I increased the size of the mounts so that they can be drilled thru. This allows me to mount the exhaust manifold then mount the intake separate allowing for removal without having to disturb the exhaust.

The B usually indicates a body built by Beaudette , one of several companies that supplied the bodies in 1915. Are the original radiators honeycomb, or horizontal slat style?
Last post
I had two aftermarket radiators that I took to a radiator repair shop that knows what they are doing and are very familiar with antique radiators.
One of them was a Hexcel honeycomb radiator that had a top tank crack. After fixing the crack they pressurized it to 1 or 2 PSI and found that it was not worth fixing.
The other radiator I had been...

Disteel Wheels - Scale Model Parts
by

Just wanted to thank everyone here you all were really helpful as I started researching Disteel wheels for model T's for scale models. I was able to use the dimensions and pics from here to create 3D models, have them cast in brass, and then use the brass masters to make resin copies for sale that fit the AMT 1:25 model T kits. Next up is a...

There is a good article in the July/August issue of the AACA Antique Automobile magazine about an all-original 1915 touring that has remained in the same family's possession all these years. It will make you patina guys' socks roll up and down!

My 6-volt, group 1 battery won’t crank my ’27 touring. After an overnight charge, the battery measures 6.25 volts and it passes a load test. When I jump start it with a 12-volt battery, it starts right up. When running, the ammeter registers like it always has. I’m a bit suspicious of the foot operated starter switch but, where else should I be...

This thread is rather confusing from start to finish. Here is what I mean.
A battery that was charged overnight and then measured with the battery charger just disconnected would measure higher than 6.25 - it would measure more like 6.8 or higher. It would then slowly (much later) drift back to 6.35 or so.
If the hot lead of the battery was...

My Tudor engine was rebuilt about eight years ago to include a valve job. It runs great. At least once every couple years (approx 1,000 miles) a valve pin goes missing causing my T to run rough. Upon inspection, I find that the valve, spring, and spring seats are in good condition, but I'm missing a pin.

The parts list called out the nut for bolt 3968 (as nut) and it is drilled for a cotter pin too, yet there is probably no reason for this nut in the first place, since there is no stress or rotation other than a slight pivot of the fan arm and it goes through the timing cover and threads into the block boss on top, so I...

That is correct, the arm continued to be used as it was even though they retained the bump for awhile after moving the tension bolt from vertical to the...

Do any of the Vendors sell solid hood rods ? I just got a set of SS rods from Snyder's that are hollow like original. I know I got a set of solid rods for my Model A several yrs back and they are easier to install without risking bending. The catalogs I have doesn't say if they're solid or hollow.

I have found a real easy way to remover and replace rods. Lubrication and a drill motor. Apply lube. Clamp the end of the rod in the drill motor and slowly spin it. At the same time either pull out or push in to remove or reinstall.

Eric, when you wind the adjuster out, you may find that the pedal shaft is still inside the threaded hole in the trans cover, making a simple insertion of the suggested washer not possible. You could then resort to replacing that adjuster with a less beat up one with a neat end on it. Wear on the band ear may mean that this will not last long, but...

I fit my New Day timer to the engine today and have a question: How easily should the timer rotate? Do you adjust the ease of turning by bending the piece of steel flat stock that holds the timer in place?
Last post
The timer tension springs are set at the factory. You don't need to do a thing. I have no knowledge on the new New Day timers, as I have dozens of good old originals. I wouldn't mess with it, however, before you connect the tension spring, I would rotate the time in the front cover to see how it feels.

I was out investigating the issue. Rechecked rods, 1-3 (3 dip pan so no #4 was checked). Those three rods checked in at .0012-.0015 via the plastigauge. Mind you nothing is truly round anymore in this engine, as I did check a few times in various spots of the cap. Obviously because I filed the caps, the clearances are wider toward the rod bolts....
