Removing oil from concrete.........

I'm posting this at the request of a member who saw a posting asking about getting oil out of concrete, such as a driveway. A useful trick, since the model T tends to mark its territory . I couldn't find the original post, so here's the info he gave me.....
Get a bag of Portland cement, NOT concrete.
Pour some gasoline on the oil stain.

I guess I am weird. I purposely pour oil changes on the floor and let it soak in.
After a few days, I scatter sawdust over the treated area to soak up the excess
and run it through the wood stove. The floor is waterproof, tough as nails, and
has a glass-like surface to roll things around on. I rotate the areas treated, but
the areas where our...

Hello Forum, I haven't posted in a very long time but I'm finally making some progress on my T. I bought it about 20 years ago and got the chassis running about 15 years ago, but life, career changes, moving etc kind of put a stop to everything and it sat in a barn for the last 8 years. it was almost to the point where it would qualify for a Barn...

They look like the time dogs that lock into a timer that is used to turn lights off and on. You place them next to the hour you want the lights to come on and next to the time you want them to go off they rotate and hit a small switch turning lights on and off. Timers for lawn sprinklers use them too.

Hi Folks,
I bought a job lot of tools this week. Anyone know how to use a Radamax plug and spark tester? The two prongs lead to a filament inside that presumably glows when touched to HT lead and earth. View through the little window. Haven't tried that yet! But how does it test a plug?

Of late, when I switch from battery to magneto, the engine stops running. I know the magneto itself is good.
Two recent things that are different are: 1.) the ignition switch is getting harder to flip from battery to magneto the way it did before. Sometimes I have to struggle to get the key to turn to battery, then magneto, when starting the T....

The wiring at the horn is usually very questionable. Most have a threaded screw from the inside with a couple of insulating washer. The inner one will crack and some times fail. I suggest you look carefully at the horn insulation.

I've had this 1923 touring for eleven years and was aware that it has some of those old reproduction wiring harnesses with mostly wrong colors. But today when I started to install a fuse it dawned on me that all the wires that are supposed to be 12 gauge are actually 16 gauge. Obviously Ford used 12 gauge for a reason, but I'm enough of an...
Last post
Steve, the short answer is that whatever the weakest link in the system is will be the hot spot. You want that to be a fuse, not a random spot in the harness. With 16 ga., the only way to accomplish this would be to go to a lower amp rated fuse, at which point you would get a lot of nuisance blows. I'd put new harnesses in. FYI, when I got mine...

Sure but at a point the paper used to make the parts get just too warped and separated to fix. I like the pin type, but think they have the most issues. The pressure pushing up from the contacts on those 3 pins causing separation of the laminated paper substrate seems to be the biggest issue. If not too bad they can be fixed. I would suggest if...

ETimer or ITimer has to be the best timers available currently. Yes, the initial cost is a bit more but after you factor in a life time warranty practically and never needing any type if cleaning or maintenance or not requiring the front cover to be centered correctly the cost seems like a bargain!!
YMMV

First post
I'm installing a new top on my early Canadian '13. It had a new top sometime in the past and the original top covering was still on the bows up until today. Because of the amount of tack holes in the wood needing plugging, I decided it was best to replace the front bow top material covering.
As far as I can tell, this top never had the front flap...
Last post
A little more progress....too cold to tack to the bows. Classtique left the Murphy fasteners off of the bottom row so I could match them to the car's original fastener positions. I wonder why they put them on in such a manner?

With hot weather here now (temps in the upper 90s this week), I'm reminded that I need to do all I can to drive our '21 Touring more efficiently. I realize that I have developed the habit of not adjusting the carb, but just leaving it where it cranks best and driving. I know that the proper, by the book way is to lean the mixture a quarter turn or...

It is quite simple to find the proper setting. With the spark, you find the point where you get the most power with least throttle. This will vary according to the speed of the engine. So if the initial timing is set correctly at the timer with the lever all the way up, that would be used for starting so the engine will start in the correct...

A model T engine usually stop running with the flywheel in 1 of 2 places about 180 degrees apart thereby your starter engages the ring gear about the same place every time you start. I have rotated a ring gear on a later car. It was one on which the ring was pressed on. But on a T, with the amount of work to be done to rotate the ring gear, I would either move the car a short distance by pushing in high gear, or I would do what is much easier turn the starting crank 1/4 turn and then use the starter. This is the first time I am building a rear axle. Apparently I need to rivet the brake cam lever to the hub brake cam. I have never done that and I am not sure how it is done. If you cannot find 26/27 brake cam levers use the levers off a handbrake. They are the same piece with a slighly larger bore to fit the controller shaft. Wrap a thin piece of steel shim around the brake cam shaft for a tight fit.

Wheel shimmy is caused by loose parts in the steering mechanism. A quick fix is to place that device to keep it from shaking. It does not fix the underlying problem. The shimmy occurs when you go over a bump and it starts to shake. If that happens at certain speeds it causes harmonious vibrations and continues to shake. Usually it will shake until...

You can tell if a model T engine is getting fuel by checking the carb and manifold temperature to see if they get cooler after being cranked a number of times. not a cold weather test. In my experience, a bent manifold can be made to have all four holes in alignment, but the spacing between the holes is usually off. Generally the center two holes will be spaced out too far, perhaps by as much as 1/16 , which is really just as bad as having the holes out of line up and down.

I ruined a modern cam/timing cover seal by trying to expand it by putting it between two pieces of wood in a vice.
Any other tips or tricks on making one of these a bit bigger so it fits more snug?
It even occurred to me to just leave it like it is and glue it in with RTV around the perimeter but I don't think it'll stay put.
Last post
Be careful buying cheap RTV.
I only use Permatex Ultra Black RTV. Let it cure over night and you won't need to worry or install retainer screws if you have removed all the oil from the mating surface!
Most guys here also use it to retain a modern seal on the outside of the cover on the crankshaft. Guarantees a leak free chankshaft seal

Yes, I painstakingly centered the ring, and the ring is round. I think it's working okay based on a good coil doing what it's supposed to. Hello all,
I'm building a 1921 Roadster and need information on the mounting of the Oval Fuel Tank.
It's my understanding that when the oval tank was introduced in 1920 in preparation for the lower seat position that was to come in 1923/4 a temporary spacer may have been used to raise the oval tank to match the position of the top of the round...

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this thread. I've been occupied with doing the wood work needed to change my Mel Miller based (round tank) roadster framing to the oval tank type roadster framing as well as swapping out my round tank to an oval tank.
Thanks for the Pictures John. Also thanks to the others for the responses. Eric, Are you...

Before we try to guess how this is possible I thought the experts here might give me some idea how it is even possible to drive a 1927 T 35 miles and then suddenly it wont run well enough to climb a hill. When I checked to see if the coils were firing I noticed #2 was dead but when I would crank it over by hand #4 was firing 2 times! It was going...

Can someone post a picture of the correct routing for the Timer connecting rod. Mine is all well bent up, and hits/rubs on a few items.
Now that I have fixed my timing rod lever (poor description), she just is not running quite right. I think I need to be able to get a little more advance while at cruising speed.

What Keeps the Lock Nut In Place?

Here's a simple question, but one that has me scratching my head.
Regarding the lock nut that goes on the end of the camshaft...the one that keeps all the timer guts in place...what keeps it in place if there's no cotter pin? It seems like the rotation of the cam would loosen it over time.

Makes perfect sense.

There are screw heads not easily seen in this picture all over the seat area.
I'm hoping that I can remove some of them and this will make room for the tank to come straight out.
If this is possible, please let me know which screws need to come out.
Thx.

What is the prefered type of manifold gasket material. Copper rings or 2 piece asbestos. Currently using asbestos but had one start leaking last week.
Last post
Others may have a different opinion, but I find these copper gland gaskets can be re-used, probably several times if that were necessary, which makes them cheaper in the long run. Years ago, glands of this type made of aluminum (I think with an asbestos core) were available, and were much softer. They could only be used once.

Oil holes for wrist pin

Hello,
i have aluminium pistons which didn't have oil holes drilled for the wrist pin in my 26 Roadster.
Can someone please post a picture with the aluminium piston with the oil holes drilled?
I am interested in the location of the hole, the number of holes and the diameter.
My intention is to drill the holes for the oil.
Piston.jpg
Thanks...
Last post
It’s actually more important to have the pistons honed to fit the pin. Most T piston pins are way too tight and/or the bores are out of alignment. Correcting that is more important than drilling extra oil holes. If you do drill holes, you will need to somehow de-burr the insides of the holes.

Many years ago I was led to believe that one of the rear wheels ( not necessarily on a “T”) was considered to be the “Driving Wheel”, ie. the one which transmitted most of the power to the pavement. This was accepted as being the wheel on the driver’s side of the vehicle. . My question is: is this premise in any way true and if so, what causes...

I have always understood how a differential works and that the wheel with the least traction will spin, but that is not my question. Given the SAME traction at both wheels, will one ( the “driving wheel”) exert more force than the other in propelling the vehicle? If this is truly a “wives tale”, I wonder what observation would have prompted such...
