Engine rebuild.

Hello all,
I just started the rebuild of an unknow engine.
Here is what I found on the crankshaft.
I am wondering what should be done with the fourth rod and the weights welded on the crankshaft?
The camshaft seemed to be grinded. How can I be sure about the way it was done? (will post photos of it later)

We don't like to weld on a crank, but what is done is done.
The bolts that come with the weights, we do not use, as we had a set come loose once. Nothing hurt, as they just slide back and fourth about 1/4 inch, but you can hear them. We have used about 175 sets, and never any trouble, I like them very much.
We use Caterpillar, bolts, and castle...

I’m thinking of buying a new radiator apron for my ’27 Touring. The old apron has no crank thimble in it and no holes for a trim strip. It rattles like crazy. Both the Lang’s and Schneider’s catalogs mention that a hole must be drilled in the new apron, but I’m confused about where to drill it and don’t want to mess it up.

Three things are needed for a dependable T.
A good radiator for cooling
Good tires for driving,
A good fuel system which begins at the gas tank.
If one of those three has problems you won’t be driving your T for any length of time.

With the wheels off the ground, car in neutral, the nature of the beast is; the wheels will still spin because of drag from oil between the disk. That is just the way it is and is nothing like a dry clutch. ;)

Received my U&J carburetor rebuilt by Stan Howe this afternoon. It looks great and I’m anxious to “give it the gas.” Stan has said he is slowing down in his rebuilding business and I’m thankful he was able to complete mine before hangs up the towel.

Might be easier to find / use the correct manifold ... right? It’s not like they are impossible to find. I imagine adding a header would put the geometry in a place that causes other fitting problems.

In the UK you used to see Running in. Please pass signs on the rear of new cars as they drove slowly during their running in period.
I am putting my engine (1918) back in my tourer after a complete overhaul (rebore + rebabbeting) and I am wondering about running in . What should I do once I have the engine running again?

If the car was assembled with Timesaver, it is broken in. If it was bored, it is not, and the mains and rods will appreciate a little babying. If it was reamed, hard to tell condition and size of reamer and to treat as if bored.
Importantly, the oil should be changed once the engine has about 1-2 hours on the clock (my preference).

It is a glass bowl and filter. While the photos are dark and small, the filter looks pretty plugged up. My OP; you need to pull the tank and clean it or it will just be a constant fight to keep clean and fuel flowing. Even small bits can keep the carb float valve from closing.

Hello together,
I use Aluminium Pistons in my 26 Roadster with .040 oversize and the Grand Rings for Aluminium Pistons .040. The standard Gap for the rings is 0.004-inch per inch of diameter of the cylinder. That means 0.004 x 3.790 = 0,015.
My question is now, what is the maximum accept gap for this combination? is 0,024 to much???

Might check position of the rings on that piston. Had one rebuild that fouled #1, valves were ok, but pulled the piston and found one ring up-side down and the taper was pushing up the oil.
Used a hone and scuffed the bore, replaced the ring correct side up, put piston back, and no more issues.

I am about done installing a left hand shifter in my 1921 touring. I have not driven it yet using the ruckstell (there was no shift rod when i got it). Before taking it on the road i would like to check to be sure the geometry of the shift rod is right and that it shifts properly. My question is can i run it on jack stands to see if all is right?

We visited this subject before...
I replaced my stock headlight bulbs this summer with a 260 lumens LED bulbs. Much brighter than stock, but nothing like the modern stuff in your eyes.
I got a pair today that are 700 lumens !! Amazing difference !! 3X brighter than the others and 10X over stock !! 8-)

When I clicked on your link it took me to the photo shown below. IF that is the photo you meant, and IF the fenders, hood, radiator, are of the same style that originally came on the car from the factory, it would be a 1917 or later. All those items could be changed out (bolt on items).

Update; dropped in a 22 mm long socket down the tube and a 3/4 x 4’ wood dowel (all I had handy) made sure to clear the rivets, three hits with a three lb. and popped right out. Ordered up new parts, cleaned up waiting patiently for ups 😂.

Use a Teflon tape or anti-seize compound. If you use the thin white Teflon tape, use several wraps. The yellow or pink stuff is thicker and works better on the plug threads. The copper based anti-seize compound works the best for me.

Unfortunately, even those charts can be found with temperatures for the same oil all over the board. That one is especially suspect as my modern car says to use 5W20 PERIOD, and didn't bother to ask what the temperature was where I live, but according to that chart if it's above 14*F I shouldn't use it.

I have customer engine I am working on with about 2500 miles on it since a Scat stroker with Scat new insert rods were installed with rebuild. No oil pump. Egge pistons, STD. Bore.
1. Piston pins have wear at the rod bushings, about 5 to 10 K. Pistons bushings fine.
2. Is it needed to grind the Scat rods to clear the cam?

First of all, it took almost a half-hour per tube to put in six ounces of Counteract beads. What I did was get a mustard squeeze bottle from the dollar...

They work great on my speedster!
You skipped a step installing the beads. First use a 1/8 drill and drill out the valve stem through its base. There is a restricted point right where the stem connents to the tube and it is very difficult to get the beads through that point if you don't drill it out.

Well I have had an interesting time revitalizing a Model T 1918 that has not been run for at least 45 years. You need good compression, good coils and timing and fuel to run. Very little Fordson parts are same as T, I am aware of only the coils, and timer fitting a T. The Fordson engine was larger than a T and had a transmission with three fwd and one reverse and no brakes until the much later models.

I have tightened the nut holding the muffler to the engine, the threads seem to be fine but when the TT runs it vibrates,loosens and eventually unscrews. There was a part in the 2015 catalogue, (thanks Tom) 306IL Exhaust pack nut locking clamp that is not online it seems. What have you done to keep the brass nut from loosening?

I own a building in the small town of Jefferson, SC, and we have this old picture of the town that everybody cherishes... I wish I had a higher resolution scan but this is from a postcard... if you click it it should get larger. Anyways, this picture is always listed as being from 1925, but I have reason to believe it's from earlier...

It looks as if there was a lot more going on in that town 100 years ago than there is now. :)
Unfortunately you're very correct. It was a cotton town, and up until about 2000 was still doing quite well. The factory shut down 1000 feet or so south of this intersection and dried up the entire town. Things are starting to look better though!

Tomorrow I get a electric spinal cord stimulator installed. This is similar to a pacemaker. My concerns are can I drive a T and can I still use my arc welder? Any one have any experience or knowledge of this? If this solves my back pain, I can continue restoring My latest T project.

I have a Frontenac head I will be using on an engine that has a Model 'A' crankshaft. I don't recall the model of the Fronty but it is the one that came in Truck, Touring, and Speedster versions. It has been a long time since I looked it up but SR comes to mind.

Some of the vendors offer Pedal Boot sets.
Large sets have a boot for the brake lever as well, but because I have RHD cars, I'm thinking of buying a small set (pedals only) for my Speedster .

I took these pictures out in the sun so they aren't the best but I think you can get the idea of what I did. This was done 12 years ago and has held up pretty good. I put the brushes on and then a layer of bubble wrap with foil on both sides and then my rubber mat. It's not pretty but neither is the car or the driver but it makes a huge difference...

It was a real struggle to get the steering gear case out of the steering column, now I need to know the best way to get the control shafts out of the gear case. The photos show the four areas that are bent over the shafts to hold them in place. They appear so delicate that if I try to pry them, they will break off. Can someone who has done this...

You're right. I was wrong! It's been about 20 years since I removed the control rods from a steering box. I don't remember having any trouble doing so and don't remember heating it either.

While I don't the the starting cone I do have 2 tenon cutters. The problem with them is they only cut to X size. While you may have 1/2 or 5/8 tenons, they really are a bit larger for crush and the cutters don't leave a fillet at the bottom as needed. Other issues with the ones I have were; diameter of stock, age of wood and dryness.

I like to run Kingston's on my T's as a tribute to my Dad who worked at the Kingston plant in Kokomo for 26 years but today I pulled the leaking carb off the 09 and it said Ford NH on the tag. Turns out the drain was open a little and the carb looked like new and it runs good so I put it back on. I am not an expert on carb's so I ask the experts...

My question is this.
My T started to run very poorly last year, so I decided to put in a set of new aluminum pistons. I honed out the cylinders and the walls measured stock. With that said, I replaced the original valves with the new type. ( Non-adjustable)
Now that have it back together, it’s very hard to start and when it does start, it runs...

Fired up a long slumbering T today (about 15-18years) and oil was flowing down both sides of the hogshead from behind the crankcase. I checked the mag post and head-gasket and both were dry. It was coming from where my finger is pointing and down to the corners of the engine pans creating little oil lakes in the corners.

Last winter I won off Ebay some spoke blanks for my 21 wheels. I have turned the tenons but am at a loss on doing the hole. I am coming up with 2-3/16 on the hub where the spokes sit. I have a jig built to put the spokes in to mark for length that I could use, but 2-3/16 is not a normal hole saw size. I just need to put a curve on the end not take...

Some models of spokes were alternately tapered and the last spoke went in like a wedge, no press was required, the hub bolts would pull it tight. All the spokes on my Canadian '26 are like that.

I had the motor and transmission rebuilt about 4 years, alum. pistons, scat crank, stainless valves & seats, etc. Yesterday when I drained and refilled the radiator some accidentally splashed into the 1st and 2nd spark plug dimples on the head. I use ether anti-seize or white teflon tape, which ever I have at hand at the time. I have some old anti-seize with lead in it (known in California to cause all kinds of nasty things to the body if you eat it! :lol: ), but as said above what ever brand.

George, proper spark advance depends on the engine RPM, it should run better with the spark lever fully down at a high RPM, mid range spark advance for idle or low rpm, fully retarded for starting on Bat, a couple of notches advance for starting on Mag.
I would suggest grounding out one spark plug at a time while at a mid RPM range and listen for...

I took a 35-mile drive today and the last half a mile was up a steep, rutted and rocky road when my 26 Coupe quit. Flipping the key over to the battery it started immediately, but when switched back to mag it quit again. I believe Derek is correct about Dave Szumowski being the person you are talking about. His dual overhead cam model T is just evil . He also made a small run of Rajo 4 valves and maybe even some 8 valve heads.

After painting my 26 roadster pickup I am installing the body back on the frame. When I took it apart there was wood in odd places between the frame and body. Things really didn’t line up right either . Does the body bolt directly to the frame or should there be some type of spacer like a rubber washer? Thank you for any input on this.

The special body bolt I referred to above, is also used to hold the taillight bracket on 26 fenders. It really isn't a square head, but has a small 3/8 hex head. The nuts are square however. I gave out bum information above.

How much wheel wobble, or any, is normal or acceptable?
I re-spoked three wheels and all four have about 1/4” of wobble.
On another T I recently acquired I notice about the same. I haven’t checked my TT yet.

Does anyone have diagram (breakdown) of a magneto horn? I believe there is suppose to be some paper gaskets but don't remember seeing them when I cleaned mine. My horn sounds pathetic.

Phillip, the magneto horns are adjustble. If you look down the trumpet you will see a slotted screw and a locknut. I welded a socket to a piece of tubing to make my own very deep socket. This weekend I removed the old top and bow wrapping on my 1915 runabout restoration project. The bows had what appeared to be original wrapping, and I felt like I was unwrapping an old Egyptian mummy. The front bow wood had 30 lbs marked on it. Does anyone know if Ford, or whomever made the top bows for him in 1915, use recycled wood for the bows?...

No, it wasn't wound around the bow. The fabric just look old, like you would see on an Egyptian mummy! The fabric on all the bows was attached the same, and looked similarly old. The middle bow had been wrapped with black fabric years ago when a new top was put on. That top was also old, my guess 50+ years.

I just installed a new motometer and gull wing cap. I put the rubber gasket between the meter and cap and tightened it up. A few miles and I see water filling up the meter. (Overfilled the rad). How did the water get up in there? Never had this problem with two of my other cars.
